Tai Yi illustrations of the 8 Trigrams battle plan 6 double-page illustrations depicting bird`s-eye views of various troop formations some with muskets and banners gouache with pen and ink each c.400 x 480mm. five with red paper text panels laid on all splitting on the central fold some surface dirt contemporary patterned cloth boards worn and soiled title label pasted on folio early 19th century. ***This work almost certainly relates to the Eight Trigrams Rebellion of 1813 when various sects of the millenarian White Lotus religion believed the time right to bring about the end of the Ch`ing Dynasty and usher in a new age of eternal blessings. They planned uprisings in a number of cities in Northern China including Beijing but despite their tight organisation these were soon suppressed not least because of the high visibility of their flamboyant banners. (see Susan Naquin Millenarian Rebellion in China YUP 1976).

Coasting Pilot (The) 15 engraved charts on 17 sheets all but one double-page and/or folding and one of St.Malo on penultimate text leaf woodcut illustrations of coastal views Scotland and North Britain with outer right edge defective and renewed with some loss (approx. 1 inch) Chart of Newcastle Trade in 2 parts the second trimmed at left edge within platemark but presumably as issued to adjoin the first part upper right corner of The River of Thames defective and renewed Part of Sussex single-page and trimmed at left edge within platemark previously attached to preceding chart of Isle of Wight some other repairs but mostly marginal washed and pressed throughout modern half morocco over marbled boards folio for J.Mount and T.Page 1769. ***We have been able to trace only one other copy of this atlas the one held by the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich which collates as this copy (pp.2 40 16 plates) but has one chart missing from our copy (British Channel) whilst ours has one missing from theirs. Our copy has been restored by a professional conservator and included in the lot are the original calf covers the endpapers stubs and some of the stitching. The original front pastedown bears pencil inscriptions reading “James Palmer`s Book 7 Jan`ry 1770” and beneath another exactly the same but the date “1 Jan`ry”. One of the original rear endpapers bears a larger (later) scrawled inscription of ?J.O.Simmons Mansfield and “P.E. Island” beneath. A front endpaper bears a contemporary index of the charts the first four in ink in a contemporary hand the rest in pencil in a later hand. There are also several calculations in pencil which we assume to indicate when the book changed ownership (or similar event) as they all bear the number 1769 (date of publication) and another figure (1815 1821 and 1900) and a calculation of the difference. Bonnie Prince Charlie -- Divorce settlement A collection of 6 documents, total 27pp., small folio, four in French, one in French & Italian, one in Italian, one signed by Charles Edward Stuart as "Charles Comte d`Albanie" in two places in this later shaky hand. The signed and most significant document is described as follows in HMC, x.238 (Lord Braye`s MSS, the Stuart MSS): September 27, 1786. Rome. Original power in French executed by Charles Edward before the Chancellor of the French Consulate at Rome to M. Busoni, empowering him, in presence of or acting with the advice of Mons. J.B. Vulpian, to execute along with the Countess of Albany or her representative the agreement whereof a draft is subjoined. Signed "Charles Comte d`Albanie", seal of French consulate at Rome affixed, executed in duplicate. The draft agreement after reciting the securing of the jointure of 40,000, and the pin-money of 12,000 livres by the marriage contract upon the first subsidies received by Charles Edward, the letter of April, 1772, the letter of separation of April 3, 1784, the grant by Louis XVI of a pension of 60,000 francs to the Countess of Albany and of the same sum to Charles Edward, and the claim of the Countess to the jointure of 40,000 secured by the contract in addition to the pension of 60,000 francs, whereas her husband contended that the contract had been satisfied by the grant of the pension, witnesses that the Countess agrees to accept a reduced jointure of 20,000 livres charged on all the property of her husband, and redeemable at any time after a year from his decease at her option for 500,000 livres. The other documents include: another draft of the "Double de Projet de transaction" (proposed transaction), unsigned, and material giving information about the dowry granted to Princess Louise upon marriage and related matters. HMC lists the draft but none of the other documents
