He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism. Originally trained as a humanist lawyer, he broke from the Roman Catholic Church around 1530. In 1536 he published the first edition of his seminal work Institutes of the Christian Religion; then, he wrote commentaries on most books of the Bible, as well as theological and juridical treatises and confessional documents. Calvin's writing and preachings have spread throughout the world and provided the seeds for the branch of theology that bears his name. For the edition of this work, he received contributions from many other contemporary humanists, theologists and jurists, as mentioned in the title, like: Matthias van Wesenbeke (1531-1586), Johannes Goeddaeus (1555-1632), Jacques Godefroy (1587-1652), Barnabé Brisson (1531-1591), Hermann Vultejus (1565-1634), François Duaren, Jacques Cujas, Giulio Pace (1550-1635) e Hugues Doneau (1527-1591). Catalonia is bordered by France and Andorra to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the east, and the Spanish regions of Aragon and the Valencia Community to west and south respectively. Until 1716, Catalonia, as a principality of the Crown of Aragon, continued to retain its own Constitution and usages and laws, which gradually were adapted, till 1705, in the course of the transition from feudalism to a modern state, fueled by the kings' struggle to have more centralized territories. Over the next few centuries, the increasing centralization of power in Spain led to conflicts between Catalonia and the Spanish Crown. This work of compilation, found in a bureaucratized environment as the Kingdom of Naples in the late seventeenth century, his ideal ground diffusion. The works of the De Luca were in fact very required by forensic class and every edition had a huge publishing success.Born in Puglia, Carlo Antonio De Luca studied canon law without achieving the doctorate. He began, however, the legal profession, first in their native land, then in Naples, where he published most of his works. Prolific writer, he worked to the reprint of works by celebrated Neapolitan jurists of the past (De Franchis, De Marinis, Capecelatro), especially to the writings of Stephanus Grazianus, whose he did reprint the monumental Disceptationes forenses. […] [at colophon:] Venetiis: a Philippo Pincio Mantuano impressa, die quinto martii MCCCCC XIX [Venice: Filippo Pinzi for Bartolomeo de Gabiano, June 1519].2 volumes bound together in-folio, near contemporary stiff vellum (spine restored), ff. [48], CLXI, [1, blank] for the first volume and ff. XLIII for the second one.Title-pages printed in red and black, woodcut headletters. Each volume contains a large woodcut illustrating Justinian among his counselors.Exceedingly rare (almost a ghost) and sumptuous edition of Baldo’s commentary on Justinian’s Infortiatum (also called «Pandects») and on Digestus Novus. This edition contains the annotations of the Italian lawyer Benedetto Vadi (Fossombrone, 16th century) and the French jurist Jean Thierry (Langres, fl. 1517-1531).The Infortiatum was the name given to the rediscovered part of Justinian’s Digest (or Pandects). This part, which commences with the third title of the twenty-fourth book, and ends with the thirty-eight book, was thus called because it was the middle part, which, it was said, was supported and ‘fortified’ («infortiatum») by the two others. It treats of divorce, tutela, testaments, heritages, successions, substitutions and other important matters.Provenance: Nobiliary ring stamp (not identified) at first title-page.References: Both ICCU and CNCE 27388 locate only a copy in Italy (where the book was printed) at Biblioteca Diocesana in Ivrea. OCLC locates no other copies in worldwide public libraries. Minor traces of use, but a very good copy printed on extra-strong paper.
