CAMPBELL MALCOLM: (1885-1948) British Land & Water Speed Record Holder. Typed Statement Signed, Malcolm Campbell, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. Campbell’s statement is entitled Peace and reads, in full, ‘If we consider for a moment the process of Evolution it must be apparent that we have reached our present state of civilisation only by very gradual stages. In the beginning life was the acme of selfishness-every man existed for himself; he was bound by no laws, other than those of nature, and had no responsibilities except the provision of food and shelter for himself and his family. Then in time came the tribal system-several families banding themselves together for protection against their mutual enemies, every little community being a world unto itself. And today how far have we progressed? The tribes have become nations, but is not their attitude still the same-each one for itself? Surely, however, now that we have reached a comparatively high standard of civilisation it should be possible to continue this process of amalgamation and gradually to unite the nations into one great brotherhood? Once a people is united, war is no longer a possibility-for we do not destroy that which is part of us. It is up to us today to strive unceasingly in order to reach that stage of mutual understanding and tolerance of our neighbours which will prevent a recurrence of the unmerciful War of which so many of us have such bitter memories. By this means only can universal and lasting Peace be secured.’ Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink at the conclusion. Mounted to a folio page and with some slight, minor wrinkling at the edges. About VG Campbell prepared his statement for publication in the Pax Mundi book; an anthology of sentiments on peace published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. (September 1901). The printed document is a copy of an address that the Duke made in Canada during his tour of the British Empire, in part, `The Duchess and I desire to express to you our heartfelt thanks for the loyal and kindly sentiments contained in your Addresses. At the same time we wish to acknowledge with gratitude, the hearty welcome accorded to us by the vast crowds which to-day throng your beautifully decorated streets….It is a great pleasure to find myself here again for a third time and that on this occasion the Duchess is with me; and that we together will enjoy the memorable associations and natural beauties of this ancient city and its picturesque surroundings. And it is my proud mission here, in the ancient historic Capital of Canada, hallowed as you say by the struggles of nations and enriched by the blood of heroes such as Wolfe and Montcalm, to come amongst you as a token of that feeling of admiration and pride with which the King and the whole Empire have seen the sons of the Dominion rallying round the Flag of their common allegiance. They fought to secure for their fellow subjects the same freedom and liberty which they in the past have secured and vindicated for themselves. The blood of your gallant sons has not been shed in vain. For posterity will never forget that of the Canadians was recorded "their magnificent tenacity in attack" and that "to them the credit was immediately due, for that white flag which on the anniversary of Majuba Day, fluttered over the Boer lines of Paardeberg". May we not take heart in the belief that the blood shed on that and other battlefields in South Africa, may, like that shed by your fathers in 1775 and 1812 weave fresh strands in the cord of brotherhood that binds together our glorious Empire.` A poignant text, of interest for its comments on the Canadian Army`s participation in the Boer War. Accompanied by three related letters signed by various Canadian officials etc. VG, 4
