NB: John Varley (1778- 1842) painted extensively in Northumberland and was patronized by the local nobility, including Sir John Edward Swinburne of Capheaton, William Ord of Whitfield, and the Countess of Tankerville of Chillingham. Lady Mary Elizabeth Monck (nee: Bennet) (d.1851), was the daughter of the fourth Earl & Countess of Tankerville and received lessons from John Varley. In 1831 she became the second wife of Sir Charles Lambert Monck, MP of Belsay Castle and throughout her life produced a considerable volume of watercolours and pencil sketches showing Varley's influence. A sketch book believed to have been compiled by Lady Mary Bennet containing sketches by Varley, is included in the Tyne & Wear County Council Museum collection, Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. MUSSOLINI BENITO: (1883-1945) Italian Fascist Dictator of World War II. T.L.S., Mussolini, one page, folio, Rome, 11th April 1934, to His Majesty the King of Italy, on the printed stationery of the Ministry of War, General Administration of Official Personnel, Discipline Division. The letter concerns Reserve Infantry Lieutenant Cipriano Herin who, it states, is currently on leave and suspended from his rank 'having been denounced for forgery and embezzlement'. Mussolini further states that the Court of Irrea has officially cleared Herin of the charges, remarking 'Having considered the fact that no blemish of immortality has been proved against the defendant Herin, I have determined that no disciplinary measure needs to be taken against him.' In concluding he recommends reinstating Herin to his rank. Very minor, light age wear to the top edge, otherwise VG

The manuscript document relates to Guido Franzot of Trieste. Signed by Mussolini at the conclusion and countersigned by King Victor Emmanuel III (1869-1947, King of Italy 1900-46). A few light rust stains, just affecting a few words of text and the very conclusion of the King's signature. Otherwise VG

PRIESTLEY JOSEPH: (1733-1804) British Theologian and Dissenting Clergyman, Chemist and discoverer of Oxygen. Rare A.L.S., J Priestley, three pages, folio, Leeds, 13th June 1769, to Miss. Aikin (Anna Laetitia Barbauld) at Warrington Academy. Priestley announces 'You will be surprised when I tell you I write this on the behalf of Pascal Paoli and the brave Corsicans, but it is strictly true.' and continues to add that Mr. Turner of Wakefield ('who says he reads your poems not with admiration but astonishment') has insisted Priestley writes to her 'to request that a copy of your poem called Corsica may be sent to Mr. Boswell, with permission to publish it for the benefit of those noble islanders. He is confident that it cannot fail greatly to promote their interest, now that a subscription is open for them by raising a generous order in the cause of liberty, and admiration of their glorious struggles in its defence.' Priestley further writes 'It being written by a lady....will a circumstance very much in their favour, and that of the poem, but there is no occasion for Mr. Boswell to be acquainted with your name, unless it be your own choice some time hence....and therefore hope Miss. Aikin will not refuse so reasonable a request, which will at the same time lay a great obligation on friends in England, and contribute to the relief of her own heroes in Corsica.' and also remarks 'They may be the Coup de Grace to the French Troops in that island, and Paoli, who reads English, will cause it to be printed in every history of that renowned island.' He further urges his correspondent to comply with the request, explaining 'In this case you have only to send a corrected copy to me at Leeds, or to Mr. Johnson in London, and I will take care to introduce it to the notice of Mr. Boswell....The sooner this is done the better.' In concluding Priestley offers his own praise of his correspondent's poems and also makes a reference to his own work, 'My piece on Perspective is nearly ready for the press. Come an see me before it is quite printed, and I will engage to teach you the whole art....of it in a few hours. If you come a month after I may know no more about the matter than anybody else. I am about to make a bolder push than ever for the pillory....or something worse.' With integral address leaf. A letter of very fine content and excellent association. Lightly laid down and with two extensive, although neat, splits at the folds of the third page, slightly affecting one line of text. There is a small area of paper loss, affecting one word, caused by the removal of the seal. Two light stains to the final page and very light overall age wear. G. Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743-1825) nee. Aikin. English Poet and Children's Author. Her work Corsica: And Ode was written in 1768. Barbauld and Priestley were associated with Warringon Academy, an early dissenters' college which ran from 1756-86. In Robert Schofield's book The Enlightenment of Joseph Priestley: A Study of His Life and Work from 1733-1773 (1997) he quotes Priestley as having written 'Mrs. Barbauld has told me that it was the perusal of some verses of mine that first induced her to write anything in verse.' Pasquale Paoli (1725-1807) Corsican Patriot and Leader, designed and wrote the Constitution of this first democratic republic of the modern age. In 1769 Paoli was taking refuge in England following his defeat at the Battle of Ponte Nevu. Corsica became a French province in 1770. James Boswell (1740-1795) Scottish Lawyer, Diarist and Author, best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) English Author, friend of Boswell. Priestley's A Familiar Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Perspective was published in London, 1770.

Book signed, a hardback edition of Tretchikoff by Richard Buncher, Special De Luxe Edition published by Howard Timmins, Cape Town, for George Allen & Unwin Ltd., London, Second Printing 1951, this folio edition specially published for America, 1953. Spiral binding with gilt lettering and yellow tanned boards. With various colour and black and white plates tipped in. Limited Edition number 909 of 1500, signed by Tretchikoff to the limitations page, again signed and inscribed to the page and dated Montreal, 2nd November 1954 and signed a third time with his name alone beneath a colour plate of his self portrait. PINKERTON WILLIAM A.: (1846-1923) American Detective, son of the famed Allan Pinkerton who founded the Pinkerton Agency, the first American Detective Agency. Rare T.L.S., Wm. A. Pinkerton, six pages, folio, Chicago, Illinois, 8th April 1890, to E. H. Hanson, on the attractive printed stationery of Pinkerton's National Detective Agency. The letter takes the form of Pinkerton's detailed report of his operation W F F. The detective writes, in part, 'I was....informed that Mr. E. H. Hanson and wife, who had arrived in Chicago....had, upon arriving here missed a long diamond pin with gold head and spider, the body of which was a large diamond, thorax a saphire, [sic] and eyes rubies....valued at from $250 to $400....Mrs. Hanson stated that on several occasions during the trip the negro porter watched her diamonds closely, and he is suspected of having taken the jewellery....The porter was N. Thomas....a very large man....I wished to place a man to watch the negro to see whether he disposes of any jewellery, or not....Mr. Black [the conductor] then said "I have always suspected Thomas as he is too religious....I have always watched him for I know he stole...I will watch him very closely this trip and if I see anything wrong will telegraph Supt. Elwood. I will do all I can to get the thief. I would give ten dollars to have Thomas caught for I believe he got the diamonds as he had full access to the drawing room"....' Pinkerton's letter gives information on the various individuals he has interviewed and the places he has visited in relation to the theft, although draws no immediate conclusion as to the certain identity of the thief. CAREY GEORGE: (1547-1603) 2nd Baron Hunsdon. English Politician. Carey assumed command of the Isle of Wight's defences during the threat of the Spanish Armada. He was also associated with the professional theatre troupe The Lord Chamberlain's Men, a patronage which included William Shakespeare. D.S., G. Hunsdon, one page, folio, n.p., 1st January 1598. The document, issued when Hunsdon was Lord Chamberlain, refers to various individuals including Lord Roger North, Laurence Dutton and Sir John Fortescue, and concerns taxation and payments following an Act of Parliament in the 39th & 40th years of Queen Elizabeth I's reign. Signed by Hunsdon at the conclusion above a paper seal and countersigned by Lord Roger North above remnants of second seal. Some heavy circular stains, just affecting both signatures (although legible). About VG. Sir John Fortescue of Salden (c.1531-1607) Third Chancellor of the Exchequer of England 1589-1603.

GERARD GILBERT: (d.1593) British Politician, Attorney-General to Queen Elizabeth I 1559-81, Master of the Rolls 1581-93. Rare A.L.S., Gilbt. Gerard, one page, folio, Grays Inn, 20th June 1535, to Lady Johan Barrington. Gerard apologises, for himself and his wife, to his correspondent for their absence although continues 'But so soon as I have despatched my busines heare we will attend you, which I hope shall be within these ten daies.' He further states that he is sorry to hear that she has not been well and prays for her good recovery. With integral address leaf. Some light overall age wear and small holes to the horizontal central fold. Neatly mounted at the left edge into a collector's paper presentation folder featuring a biography and transcript of the letter. VG

ENGLISH RESTORATION: FINCH HENEAGE (1635-1689) Earl of Winchilsea, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports 1660. D.S., Winchilsea, one page, folio, n.p., n.d. (1660). The manuscript document is an affidavit issued on the restoration of King Charles II and concerns Robert Wilkinson, 'clerke....of episcopall ordination, of pious & sober conversation, orthodox in judgement, conformable to ye doctrine & discipline of ye Church of England & in all these revolutions of time hath continued very loyall to our gratious Soveraigne & eminently active for his sacred Majestys happy restauration.' Signed by Winchilsea at the foot and countersigned by a further eight Royalists including Sir John Boys (1607-1664, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports 1646-48, Governor of Donnington Castle during the Civil War), Sir Thomas Peyton (d.1683, Member of Parliament) and Sir Arnold Braems (Flemish merchant) as well as four parish priests. ANNE QUEEN: (1665-1714) Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland 1702-14. D.S., Anna R, as Queen, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Palace of St. James, 12th March 1703. The manuscript document, in Latin, appoints Thomas, Baron of Raby, to represent Her Majesty's interests at the Court of Prussia and to be accorded all right, privileges and amenities that go with the appointment. Countersigned at the foot by Sir Charles Hedges, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1704-06. With good blind embossed paper seal affixed. The text and signature are very slightly light, although perfectly legible, probably as a result of the original ink being slightly weak rather than fading. VG

GEORGE II: (1683-1760) King of Great Britain and Ireland 1727-60. D.S., George R, as King, at the head, two pages, folio, Court at St. James's, 17th January 1742/3. The manuscript document is addressed to Henry Pelham (1694-1754, British Prime Minister 1743-54), Pay Master of the Forces and is a warrant for deducting six pence in the pound from the Electoral Troops of Hanover, further giving instructions that the 'Moneys so deducted you are to keep in your hands to be applyed by you to such uses, and in such manner as We shall think fit' and asking that a distinct account be maintained. Countersigned at the foot by Samuel Sandys (1695-1770, Chancellor of the Exchequer) and two others. The partially printed document, on vellum, is a military commission appointing Edmund Boyds to be a Coronet in the 14th (Duchess of York's) Regiment if Light Dragoons commanded by Major General Sir Edward Kermin (?). Countersigned by Viscount Melbourne (1779-1848, Home Secretary and British Prime Minister 1834, 1835-41). With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Slightly neatly trimmed to the upper edge, just affecting the Monarch's signature, otherwise in very clean condition. About VG. 2

Some very light overall foxing and minor creasing at the edges, small area of paper loss at the right, not affecting the text or signatures. G
