He was the eldest son of Robert Castle Jenkins (1803-1892) and Anna Bassett Catherine Palmer (died 1885; daughter of John Palmer of Calcutta). He married Mary Campbell Allen in 1876. Along with his mother and father he is commemorated on one of the tablets in St John's Church, Beachley, near Chepstow. His father Robert served in the 61st Native Infantry in Bengal before becoming a merchant and retiring back to the family estate in Beachley, following and possibly because of the failure of his father-in-law's business for which he worked. Sir Benjamin Simpson (1831-1923) who appears in at least two of the group photographs was a noted amateur photographer who served in the Indian Medical Service (Bengal), 1853-1890; Surgeon-General, Government of India, 1885-1890. He produced a series of 80 portraits of racial types of northern India which was shown and awarded a gold medal at the London International Exhibition of 1862, while a further trip to Assam in 1867-1868 resulted in further portraits reproduced in Edward Dalton's 'Descriptive Ethnology of Bengal' (Calcutta, 1872).
