Original binding which is rubbed and worn at extremities with some surface scratches and a small circular patch of loss on the upper board but is otherwise very sound and capable of restoration.. The binding is however still very sound and capable of restoration. Text section is tight and sound. Title page with loss. Some plates are loose, some missing, others with tears. A number of complete plates remain however. This is probably one of the limited edition of 200 although the limitation page is missing.

Segnatura [*]4, 1-482 (il fascicolo 1 non segnato; impresse al solo recto le carte [*]1, [*]2, [*]4, 46/1 e 48/2). Pagine [8], 191. Testo greco e italiano a fronte. Esemplare in discreto stato di conservazione, fioriture ai margini, probabile abrasione di un timbro di appartenenza al frontespizio, che lede parzialmente la lettera iniziale 'P' del nome del tipografo Piatti. Legatura coeva in marocchino nocciola, piatti inquadrati da triplice e ricca cornice dorata a motivi neoclassici, e da una quarta e più interna cornice con angolari, impressa a secco. Al centro dello spazio rettangolare interno grande ferro a secco, a motivo orientaleggiante. Dorso liscio a sei scomparti, riccamente decorati in oro; al secondo scomparto i nomi di Anacreonte e Saffo, in caratteri dorati. Contropiatti e sguardie in carta cailloutè, dentelles interne. Al piatto posteriore macchia di grasso. Elegante edizione, stampata in soli 200 esemplari, di cinquantacinque Odi attribuite a Anacreonte, corredate dalla versione italiana del lucchese Giovanni Caselli. La raccolta offre inoltre il testo, con traduzione a fronte, di tre odi di Saffo. Dell'Anacreonte di Caselli furono pubblicate lusinghiere recensioni, come quella apparsa sulle pagine della Biblioteca Italiana, e in cui si consiglia "a chi sa il Greco [...] di non leggere alcuna traduzione di Anacreonte: a chi non lo sa consigliamo di leggere questa del sig. Caselli". Infatti si tratta - dopo Pindaro - del "più difficile de' lirici greci ad essere recato in volgare", e del quale è arduo conservare delle sua poesia "la soavità, la giocondità, le dilicatissime grazie" (Biblioteca italiana, p. 49). Quanto alla scelta delle odi, il recensore sottolinea che "il sig. Caselli ha tradotto, come il più de' traduttori Italiani, sole lv Odi di Anacreonte: tenendo forse per indubitato ciò di cui dubitava Arrigo Stefano, che l'altre, le quali in molte edizioni vengono dopo la cinquantacinquesima, non siano d'Anacreonte" (ivi, p. 55). Una seconda edizione della versione di Caselli apparve nel 1825 presso il fiorentino Ciardetti, in un volume in octavo di minore pregio tipografico.
