Dante.- Microscopic typography.- Cossovel (Francesco) Divina Commedia. Trascritto micro calligrafico a mano libera senza uso di lente, single folio broadside with Dante's full text for The Divine Comedy, presented in three cantica within architectural frame, lithograph, sheet approx. 615 x 430 mm (24 1/4 x 17 in), laid onto card support, old folds and handling creases, some splitting and damage, notably in lower left corner, some even toning and surface dirt, unframed, 1888.⁂ After the pain for the death of his son, as written by Guido Manzini in 1963 on the magazine Studi Goriziani, Cossovel developed the ability to see very small objects: from this moment he made the decision to transcribe the work of Dante on a large vellum leaf - today lost - through a specially designed pen. The title specifies that the text is "composto di 14.233 versi, c.a. 96.000 parole., c.a 400.000 lettere.

"Richard Barnes" and "John Jackson", manuscript, 1p., folio, 1588; and 9 other legal agreements relating to purchases of land in Yorkshire by Richard Vaughan of York, 1587-88, folds, browned and some staining, edges with small tears and chipped, folio (10 pieces).⁂ Wass, a small village in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, a short distance from the village lie the ruins of Byland Abbey.

At the top of the first page may be instructions to a printer, in another hand, "from 45 to 93". Names, include: Bardolph, Cokayne, Clopton, Dethick, Essex, K. Henry 7, Jerningham, Kevelock baron, Sidney, Yelverton.

Cruizing against the Owlers.- Bush (Charles, Secretary of the Board of Ordnance) Letter signed to the Ordnance officers of Portsmouth, 1p. with conjugate blank and address panel, folio, [London], Office of Ordnance, 12th December 1751, an Order to remove "Guns Powder and Gunners Stores" from HMS Seahorse and the sloop Savage for storage during refit, these ships being employed "in cruizing against the Owlers", small hole in both ff., folds, browned.⁂ Owlers were smugglers, originally applied to smugglers of wool into France, and later a general term for smuggling including tobacco, tea and alcohol.

18th century Cavalry Officer.- McDowall (Captain) & KARR (Thomas, Sergeant) Account Book, 138 pp. excluding blanks, ruled throughout, some ff. excised at end, some heavy staining in places, browned, modern bookplate on front pastedown, original vellum, soiled, upper cover creased, later rebacked in reverse calf, folio, 1767-70.⁂ The accounts of a cavalry officer stationed at Gloucester in the years 1767-70. The manuscript commences with "Abstract of Capt: McDowall's Troops Rec.ts..." It is then followed by brief individuated accounts through to the end of 1770. Entries for payments including, "Surgeon and pay master 0-1-6", "To the Shoe Makers Bill 0-6-0", "To Black Ball in Wandsworth 0-1-10", "Duffa Breeches 0-5-3", "To yr. Wife 0-2-6", on behalf of Fran.s Lowther", "Serg.t Karr" (Sergeant Karr appears to have been the scribe of this manuscript), "John Coply Farrier", etc.

Breitkopf for G.D. Walther, 1746.⁂ Rare copy of this first complete work on analytical trigonometry. Despite his mathematical achievements Oppel is better known for his contributions to mining and metallurgy. Having held a number of senior positions in the mines of the Ore Mountains he went on to be a founder of the Bergakademie Freiburg, a specialist mining school. It was the first of its kind and remains the oldest surviving institution in this field. The core of the school's collections are made up from Oppel's own, and include minerals, books and mining models.

This monumental work documents the construction and management of the Hôtel des Invalides, commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670 for the treatment and housing of wounded veterans. The design of the building was modelled on London's Chelsea and Royal Naval Hospitals, themselves designed by Wren and Hawksmoor.

Dixwell, for the Author, 1768.⁂ "Riou was in Athens while Stuart and Revett were working there, and decided to produce an architectural theory for the use of the Greek architectural orders then being described and measured by Stuart and Revett." (Blackmer). The book is dedicated to James Stuart who, along with David Garrick, Soame Jenyns and George Stubbs, is included in the list of subscribers.

Sculpture.- Thorvaldsen (Bertel) Le statue e li bassirilievi inventati e scolpiti in marmo dal cavaliere Alberto Thorwaldsen scultore danese, 80 engraved numbered plates (including title) on 78 sheets, some spotting, mostly to first few ff., contemporary half calf, spine gilt and with orange leather label, spine faded, corners little worn, rubbed, folio, Rome, [Ferdinando Mori], 1811 [issued c.1817].⁂ A rare complete copy of this work documenting the output from the workshop of this important Danish sculptor. The book is considered one of the earliest publications to reproduce works by a contemporary artist, and led to an enhanced profile for the artist.

The Architectural Antiquities of Rome, 2 vol., second edition, 129 engraved or lithographed plates and plans (numbered I-CIV & CVI-CXXX, plate CV was never published), some double, occasional foxing, offsetting, browning to text ff., contemporary half calf, rebacked, retaining original backstrip, corners bumped, folio, 1821-22 [actually c. 1836].⁂ The 1836 reissue has a surplus of sheets of the original letterpress and a number of the original lithographs either redrawn or interpreted as etchings and engravings, thus reducing the number of lithographs in the first edition from twenty to thirteen.
