Publ. in 1897 by the Librairie centrale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, an introduction by Eugène Grasset. Folio of 60 plates. Contemp. binding with marble paper. Spine and corners of binding worn, slight foxing, otherwise in excellent condition. This copy lacks 11 plates: 3; 7; 13; 19; 25; 31; 37; 43; 45; 49; 55. In this portfolio, Verneuil - artist and interior decorator - features colour plates with imaginative designs showing expressive, sinuous curvilinear forms reflecting the emergence of Art Nouveau. It celebrates a rich variety of designs based on plant and animal forms: birds; fish and other sea creatures; seashells; insects (including the favorite fin de siècle motifs of butterflies and dragonflies); and environmental plant forms such as flowers and trees. Reducing living creatures into playful decorative devices and geometric patterns, he provides dozens of striking examples to serve as models for adaptation by other interior designers. This particular work was one of Verneuil's most influential in promoting the Art Nouveau style.

approx. 240 unnumb. p. and some loosely inserted contributions, almost all in pen but a few in pencil, in 2 clothbound board notebooks w. owner's entries "Sara Wijnberg Oosterpark 45 Amsterdam", respectively "Sara Wijnberg Januari 1931" on first free endpapers, folio.W. a loosely inserted contribution on envelopes/ business writing paper with her address Oosterpark 45 in Amsterdam, and printed advertorial line: "Reeds een groot aantal ernstige gevallen van Doofheid en Ooorlijden [sic] vond bij mij blijvende geneezing". Also loosely inserted are a manuscript card and a letter addressed (both unsent and displaying great uncertainty) to "Beste Cees" and dated 26/ 28 December 1933, and some other letters, contributions, newspaper clippings. Sara Wijnberg is mentioned on the website 'Joods Amsterdam' as known from an newspaper advert in which she offers her services as a specialist in ear-related problems (1931). The diary shows that she is a pious protestant, the reformed "Elthetokerk" is mentioned regulary). The very nice and personal diary starts with annotations concerning a certain "Jr.", with whom she makes music, together with others. (7 April 1930). They are both members of a musical group that performs at so-called "catechisatie-avonden". Sara Wijnberg displays a great uncertainty towards this Jr., very explicit jealousy towards other women and incredible calculative behaviour in company. She confides only in her friend Lea. After a strange confrontation (13 April 1930): "Lea troostte me al: "Er komt misschien nog iets goeds van. Ja vandaag is Jr. 18 jaar.
