Fioriture, qualche gora, alcune tavole rinforzate. (C.G. Lacaita - R. Gobbo - A. Turiel. La biblioteca di Carlo Cattaneo. Bellinzona, 2003). Folio (344x252 mm). [8, including frontispiece], CXLIII, [1] pages. 23 full-page engraved plates. Engraved frontispiece signed by Carlo Gregori. Title-page printed in red and in black, including the woodcut printer's device. Woodcut initials. Text in French and in Italian. Quire Q (pages LXIX-LXXI) is in the present copy erroneously bound between quires K and L. Foxing, some waterstains, some plates reinforced. First leaves and plates mounted on onglet, gutter of some leaves reinforced. Outer margin of the first plate cut, and soiled. Modern half morocco binding. The copy comes from the library of the Milanese chemist and science writer Antonio Cattaneo (1786-1845; his ownership inscription on recto of the first leaf: 'Antonio Cattaneo. Sig. Cattaneo Compania Quid Directeur des Écuries de S.A.R. le Duch de Chablais'); later the copy was owned by Cattaneo's nephew, Carlo, the well-known Milanese patriot and philosopher, who became Ambrosiana Library's Prefect (1801-1869; his ownership inscription on verso of the first leaf: 'Ex Libris Pref.ti Caroli Cattaneo'). First edition, printed on thick paper, of this classic work on horsemanship, by the German horseman Baron d'Eisenberg, at that time Director and Master of the Horse at the Academy in Pisa. The bilingual text is richly illustrated by 23 engraved plates: the first one - often lacking - shows Favori, un barbe de Tunis, while the remaining 22 plates include 120 illustrations describing the parts of the horse. The present copy comes from Carlo Cattaneo's book collection. Most of Cattaneo's books were carried in 1855 to Lugano (in Switzerland) where the Italian patriot spent the last years of his life. The nucleus of the collection merged the Lugano civic Library, while numerous books were gradually sold to deal with the family's creditors. (see C.G. Lacaita - R. Gobbo - A. Turiel. La biblioteca di Carlo Cattaneo. Bellinzona, 2003).

Minor losses and some stain. Slightly loose. The Academy of Roman Antiquities was established in 1740 by Pope Benedict XIV as a restoration of the famous fifteenth-century academy of Pomponius Leto. It had its first seat in the Campidoglio and soon afterwards in the Quirinale Palace, and its sessions were frequently attended by the pontiff. Of its activity there is little evidence in some publications such as the Argomenti de' discorsi da farsi, in essa come nelle altre accademie di Benedetto XIV (Rome, Collini, 1740-1753) and the Dissertazioni sopra vari punti interessanti d'Historia Romana dell'Abate Gaetano Cenni (Pistoia 1778-1779). After Benedict XIV's death, it seems that the Academy, like others established by him, has ceased to exist. Philipps Sale ms. 6183; Guildford sale, Dec. 1830, 627.

Manoscritto. Scatologia/Manuscript. Scatology. Anonimo. La Merdiade. Dramma per musica. Manoscritto su carta, fine del XVIII secolo.In-folio (mm 255x187). [32] carte. Verso dell'ultima carta bianco. Vergato in elegante e ben leggibile scrittura corsiva. Folio (255x187 mm). 32 unnumbered leaves. The last leaf verso is blank. The volume is made of two quires respectively of 30 and 2 leaves. Written in an elegant and neat writing in a unique hand. Some foxing, last leaves slightly browned, small paper loss afftecing two letters, small ink stain, all in all well preserved. Modern overlapping vellum.Unknown musical drama of scatological content. The present theatrical work, unpublished, is not to be confused with the seventeenth-century writings on the same subject of Tommaso Stigliani (signed with the pseudonym Niccolò Bobadillo) and with the poem Merdeide attributed to Angelo Penoncelli and published in Turin in 1806. In addition to the drama the volume contains a prose text on the nobility of shit and some poems to be recited as intermezzi.

N. Signatures: A-Z6 AA6 BB8. On the title-page printer's device, showing Orpheus under a tree playing the viola. Author's portrait, at the age of 44, printed on title-page verso. Beautiful woodcut decorated initials. Music notation in text. Some staining, title-page a bit soiled, inner margin of the last leaf verso (a blank) anciently reinforced, overall a good, genuine copy. Early 18th-century half vellum, panels covered with marbled paper. Minor losses to spine and joints. On the front pastedown engraved bookplate of the important musicologist Henry Prunières.Rare first edition, first issue (the edition was later reissued by Barré with a new title page dated 1557), of one of the most influential music theory books of the sixteenth century. The book is dedicated to Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este. The copy here offered is lacking the folding plates, which in a number that varies from 3 to 8 are found in a few rare copies. The last two copies sold at auction over the last 60 years had no plates (Bonhams 2015, GBP 3,500 e Sotheby's 1984, GBP 1,100). Unlike most early theorists, Vicentino, who was a pupil of the Flemish-Venetian composer Adrian Willaert, did not simply summarize the practice of his time, but also attempted to adapt the Greek musical modes to the purpose of modern harmonic singing and instrumental performance. His major contribution is the adaptation of the ancient Greek chromatic and enharmonic genera to modern polyphonic practice. Anticipating Vincenzo Galilei and Claudio Monteverdi, Vicentino also expressed avant-garde's views on the relation between music and text. He stated that, in order to better express the feelings of a verbal text, music should be sometimes allowed to break the strict rules of counterpoint. N.
