The younger, Marcia Anastasia, married the Rev. Henry William Crofton (1795-1862), third son of Sir Hugh Crofton of Mohill, Co. Leitrim, 2nd Bart, who thus acquired the Earbery estates. The couple had no children and after her death Crofton married in 1840 Marianne Amelia Cazalet (died 1847) and thirdly in 1852 Frances, daughter of Robert Westropp of Fort Anne, Co. Cork. The Inchanappa line continued through Henry William's son by his second wife, Henry Morgan Earbery Crofton (1840-1878), and the latter's son Henry William George Crofton, a major in the East Surrey Regiment, who was killed in the South African war in 1902. THE WAVES ARE VERY ROUGH TODAY. I WAS OUT THIS MORNING BUT IT BEGAN TO RAIN. YOUR LITTLE MARY. Some of the letters deal with a family crisis involving James Edward Medlicott (1827-1913) during which his wife Margaret went to live in Dublin, whence she writes, with many underlinings (for example): "One word more. Do not dread exposure. As long I am so openly on good terms with you, there will be no exposure, because you must not pay hush money. Only do tell me how you were drawn in and when? Why did you not cut her in '77? Do say if you pay any one else. Do! I can bear all now. Remember you are very terribly laughed at about that vulgar brute E. Farrell. Take care, be more circumspect - more dignified. Don't make those vile jokes. And above all, don't joke with Mary Anne, Andy's sister. Remember it would be all over this place if you do. For I shall at once dismiss her. Now be brave and true and tell me all. Your loving wife MM. But very very unhappy wife. I am determined not to be put off with words but must have all broken off from this day. Write in your own name to Mrs Cassidy and say you give up the house now - God help you."

Terence MacSwiney's Paper FIANNA FAIL (The Irish Army). A Journal for Militant Ireland. Nos. 1-11 (all published), Cork, 19 September - 5 December 1914, various printers. Folio, mostly 4 pp (one double number). Fine copies. (1) Edited, financed and mainly written by Terence MacSwiney, later Lord Mayor of Cork, whose death on hunger strike in 1920 was a turning point in the independence struggle. Its main purpose was to support the Irish Volunteers, and to oppose Irish recruitment to the British Army at the start of the First World War. It reports the Volunteer controversy with Redmond in detail. It was suppressed after the eleventh issue, which reports a promise of German support for Irish freedom given to Roger Casement in Berlin. It did not circulate outside Cork, and complete sets are rare. After the paper was suppressed, MacSwiney sold his books to pay the printer's bill. He died on hunger strike some six years later. His centenary occurs this coming October.
