Paisiello refers to the painter Mattioli stating `Having Painter Mattioli all over the last month of January continued with his work..and as this Academy is granted of such work by the reports done by Cavalier Rega, …I kindly request to proceed with the seventh payment agreed of thirty ducats..´ With blank integral leaf. KARAJAN HERBERT VON: (1908-1989) Austrian Conductor. T.L.S., Herbert von Karajan, one page, folio, Salzburg, 16th May 1975, to Claudio Giombi, on his personal printed stationery, in Italian. The document being a kind of letter of recommendation issued by Karajan as a result of Giombi´s performances during the Eastern Salzburg Festival, stating in full `Claudio Giombi has sung here at Salzburg, during the Eastern Festival, the role of “Benoit” in the opera “La Boheme”. The artist has distinguished extraordinarily, both as singer and concertmaster, as well as being an excellent actor who knew how to contribute with his personal touch. The success obtained has convinced me and I intend to collaborate with him on each occasion we will have the chance to do so.´ A bold black ink signature example. MENUHIN YEHUDI: (1916-1999) American-born British Violinist. T.L.S., Yehudi Menuhin, one page, folio, Gstaad, 13th August 1996, on his personal printed stationery, to David R. Kornreich. Menuhin responds to his correspondent´s letter and states `I am delighted to think that there are still people who treasure the original 78 RPM of my recording with my great teacher, Georges Enesco, of the Bach concerto for two violins…´ further saying `I loved the performance and the experience of course. This record was treasured by many very special people and in fact my wife Diana used to listen to it decades before we met.´ Accompanied by the original envelope. A bold good signature example. Signed and inscribed by Nureyev and by six members of his cast immediately below. A good large example signature. VG £100-120   La Versiliana is a summer music festival at Pietrasanta on the Tuscany, Italy.

Set of fifteen A.Ls.S, A.Ls and Ls.S., by the Bishop of Beauvais, one, two and three pages, 4to and folio, from Paris, Milan, Rome, Cracow, Warsaw.., most dated 1682, two coded letters, and addressed to different correspondents, including Cosimo III de Medici (1642-1723) Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cesar d´Estrées (1628-1714) Cardinal of Estrées, Jerzy Dominik Lubomirski (1654-1727) Chancelor of Poland, Monsignor Pallavicini Nuncio in Poland, etc.. and two contemporary copy letters to the King and Queen of Poland. Also including a contemporary copy report given by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Marquess of Colbert, as representant of the King of France Louis XIV, about Regalia matters. GOULD JAY: (1836-1892) American Railroad Developer and Speculator, long vilified as an archetypal robber baron. His business success made him the 9th richest American citizen in history. D.S., Jay Gould, seven pages, folio, n.p. (New York), 18th December 1872. The manuscript document is an Indenture made between Gould and his wife Helen and Peter H. Watson and relates to the sale of some premises and parcel of land in Newark, New Jersey by Gould to Watson. Signed by Gould at the conclusion and countersigned by his wife, both alongside small red seals. Further countersigned by the witness, John F. Bingham, a Commissioner of New Jersey residing in New York, further confirming in a statement that Helen Gould undertook ‘a private examination separate and apart from her husband [and] acknowledged that she signed, sealed and delivered….as her voluntary act and deed truly and without any fear, threats or compulsion of the husband’. The document is tied to the paper wrapper with the original red ribbon at the head of the pages. Some light age wear and a few minor tears at the edges of some pages, not affecting the text or signatures. About VG £300-400

LINDBERGH CHARLES: (1902-1974) American Aviator who made the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, 20th - 21st May 1927. D.S., Lindbergh, in bold pencil, two pages, oblong folio, Glendale, California, 16th February 1930. The partially printed document is a page removed from the Airport Register at Curtiss-Wright Grand Central Air Terminal. Lindbergh has signed the document and further provided holograph details of the date and time of his arrival, his pilot’s license number (‘69’), the make of aircraft he was flying (‘Falcon’), the airplane license number (‘NC7455’), the number of crew and passengers (‘1’) and the place from where he has flown (‘Santa Barbara’). The document also bears over forty other signatures, the majority in pencil, by various pilots who also landed at the air terminal between 1st - 17th February 1930, including Emory Bronte (1902-1982, American Pioneer Aviator who, with Ernie Smith, completed the first civilian non-stop flight from North America to the Hawaiian Islands, 1927), Dudley Steele (1892-1968, American Pioneer Aviator), Paul San Martino (1907-1976) etc. Some light overall age wear and minor creasing and with two file holes to the left edge, about VG £600-900

The partially printed document relates to the promotions of Carlo Perno (technical services) and Giovanni Arena (machine services) of the Corps of Royal Maritime Crews, both naval personnel serving on board military ships, to Captain. Signed by Mussolini at the foot and countersigned by King Victor Emmanuel III (1869-1947) King of Italy 1900-46. With several official stamps and annotations to the borders, not affecting the signatures, and with a series of very small file holes to the left edge. About VG. £150-200

GÖRING HERMANN: (1893-1946) German Political & Military Leader of the Nazi Party. A very interesting D.S., Göring, three pages, folio, Berlin, 26th June 1934, in German. The partially printed document is a contract hiring Alexander Kipnis to perform at the Berlin State Opera from 1st October 1934 until 31st August 1937 and establishes full terms and conditions. Signed in bold black ink by Göring in his capacity as Minister President of Prussia. The contract remained unsigned by Kipnis. With revenue stamp to the upper left corner. Professionally mended and reinforced at the joint. VG £600-800   Alexander Kipnis (1891-1978) Jewish Russian born Bass. Despite anti-semitism in Bayreuth, Jewish performers such as Alexander Kipnis and Emanuel List performed in Parsifal during the 1933 Festival. When all Jewish artists were dismissed from the Berlin State Opera on June 1933, Kipnis and List were allowed to remain, thus Kipnis was still under contract in Spring 1934. Kipnis broke this contract in 1935 and flee Nazi Germany

The document bearing at the heading The Prussian Prime Minister beneath a blind embossed seal depicting the German eagle perched upon a swastika. Göring states in part `I have gladly decided to accept your request…..and therefore you are authorized to inscribe my name as godfather of your daughter at the church registry. This adoption will take place with the condition that there will be no further commitments.´ further concluding `I wish all the best to the godchild, and she will receive a gift of 100 Reichsmark. The typed document heading `On behalf of the German Nation´, is an officer appointment, promoting three new Major Generals. The officers being Raithel from the artillery regiment, Köchling and Mayer from the infantry regiment. Signed at the Fuhrer Headquarters by Hitler in bold black ink in his capacity as Fuhrer. Countersigned at the bottom by the Wehrmacht Commander in Chief, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel. With a large blind embossed seal depicting the German eagle perched upon a swastika. An excellent war time document appointing three future well known and accomplished generals. HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. Rare T.L.S., A. Hitler, one page, folio, Berlin, 22nd July 1942, to General Giovanni Messe, in German. The typed letter bears at the heading the Fuhrer´s name Adolf Hitler in golden embossed letters, underneath a golden German eagle perched upon a swastika. Hitler states `I thank you and all the soldiers of the former Italian Expeditionary Corps for the greetings and for your loyalty...´ further saying `The knowledge that you and your brave corps stand at an important section of the Eastern front was and still is today a pleasure am proud of. You and your soldiers served your fatherland well. With your perseverance during the hard winter months and your still unbroken fighting spirit…´ and concludes with `Today more divisions from your homeland will join you, which is a new evidence for me that our nations, whatever may come, will fight until common victory and gain their freedom.´ A good war time letter. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope, typed addressed to the General Commander of the Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia, bearing to the verso a circular red label with the embossed German eagle perched upon a swastika and the text “Wehrmacht Adjutant to the Fuhrer”, only very slightly affected by the opening of the letter. Also including an original clipped article from the Italian newspaper Il Giornale D´Italia, dated 20th August 1942, published to the front page and reporting on the present letter. EX £2500-3500   Giovanni Messe (1883-1968) Italian General and Field Marshal. Often considered the most valuable Italian General during WWII. The Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia, known as CSIR was a mobile infantry and cavalry unit of the Italian army that took part in the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union. In July 1942 the CSIR was replaced at the Eastern Russian front. Messe would leave Russia few months later in November

To the second page and immediately below Sassu´s signature, the artist has drawn in blue ink a sketch representing a horse. Sassu states `Unfortunately, I will come on Sunday to disturb you and Giorgio, as Helenita will be singing La Traviata and I think also Butterfly…´ further saying `Today she had a great success and we are grateful to you, hope that next time you will not miss the performance otherwise I will come during the night to pull you pout of bed, and a third presence in your bedroom could be embarrassing, don't you think so?´ and concludes in Spanish `"El Mono" (The Monkey), kindly, see you soon´. VOSTELL WOLF: (1932-1998) German Painter and Sculptor. A pioneer of Happening and fluxus. Attractive A.L.S., Wolf, two pages, folio, Malpatida, 24th December 1990, to Sebastiá, in Spanish. A very artistic writing in large black ink letters, including a sketch illustrating his explanation. Vostell refers to the drawings he has sent to his correspondent and states in part `I also send you the original collage "of the Requiem" project for Barcelona 92! I beg you to edit it on a double page..(it is the first design, don´t lose it)´ further referring to other artistic projects he is working on, and concludes `The bull´s head I will draw by hand on the stone, using 2 blacks and greys in the printing house. A big hug and wish you many new years! Mazaltov´ Wolf writes in Spanish, and concludes in Hebrew wishing good luck. T.L.S., Ferrari, one page, folio, Modena, 29th July 1976, to journalist Paolo Marasca, on the Ferrari printed stationery, in Italian. Ferrari responds to his correspondent´s letter, and explains that he is not traveling any more for various reasons, and states in part `..I will invite you, in order to collaborate and allow you to get in the best way the information you require for the success of your initiative´. FRENCH REVOLUTION: A very good document with multiple signatures by several major figures of the “Comité de Salut Publique“ of the National Convention, two pages, folio, Paris, 10th January 1795, to the Chief Staff General of the North army, in French. Signed by the seven members of the Committee of Public Safety, comprising Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1753-1824) 1st Duke of Cambacérès. French Lawyer and Statesman. Author of the Napoleonic Code, which still forms the basis of the French civil law; Lazare Carnot (1753-1823) French Politician and Engineer. President of the National Convention 1794. Known as the “Organizer of Victory“ in the French Revolutaionary wars; Jean Jacques Bréard (1751-1840) Politician. Moved to France from Quebec. Served from 1793 to the National Convention and later to the Committee of General Security and to the Public Safety one; Jean Pierre Chazal (1766-1840) French Politician and Lawyer. He will vote in favour of the execution of Louis XVI; A. Dumont; L.B. Guyton and P. Marec. The partially printed document states `You (“tu“ in French, in ti´s colloquial way) ordered all Commanders of the different locations to assemble all weapons immediately..´ further requesting an immediate response `You will give response to this request and inform us on the reasons which made you take such decision, we will be waiting for a prompt response..´ and concluding `..and even if there was a reason, such kind of decisions can harm the Service and the administrative Weapons Commission provisions taken´. Small creasing to the lower edge and a small tear to the right edge not affecting the signatures. G £150-200

Maret reports to his correspondent that he has sent him a copy of the records of the legal minutes, and refers to the King of Naples police Minister, further stating `If you could please ask the employees of your Ministry to translate such document. As I have not been able to do this in ,y offices as the text is full of technical words, and is difficult for French..´ With blank integral leaf. TALLEYRAND-PÉRIGORD CHARLES MAURICE DE: (1754-1838) French Diplomat and Statesman. Prime Minister of France July-September 1815. A very interesting N.S., Ch Mau Talleyrand, at the base of a L.S., Whitworth, one page, large folio, Paris, 12th May 1803, on a partially printed document issued by the British Embassy in Paris, to J. Charles Clermont, in French. The attractive document, bearing two large printed coats of arms, is a passport authorizing Charles Clermont to return to England together with his servant, and states `Charles Lord Whitworth, Counselor of Her British Majesty and British Ambassador to France, asks and requests in the name of Her Majesty to all Officers and authorities, civil and military ones, Princes and friend States and allies of Her Majesty, not only to let Charles Clermont cross any territory, with his servant and luggage, but also to give him any help he may require on his way back to England. We promise reciprocity on similar situations…´ Beneath the British Ambassador´s signature, and annotated in another hand `The Foreign Affairs Minister certify that the above signature of H.E. Lord Whitworth is authentic, Paris, 16th May 1803´, signed by Talleyrand in his capacity as Foreign Affairs Minister. Also signed by a Diplomatic service officer, and bearing a contemporary ink stamp of the French Foreign Affairs Ministry. Small overall, minor age wear, foxing stains, edges very slightly damaged with a pin hole and a tear to the right edge, to the fold, not affecting the text or signature. G £1500 -2000   Charles Whitworth (1752-1825) British Ambassador to France. Whitworth demanded his passports on 12th May 1803, the same day the present passport was issued, and left Paris. Whitworth reached London on 20th May. Two days after Talleyrand signed the present document, on 18th May 1803, Britain declared war against France. On 22nd May Napoleon ordered the arrest of all British residents in France. On 13th March 1803 took place the famous scene between Napoleon I and the British Ambassador at the Tuileries. Before a full court Napoleon exclaimed loudly to Whitworth “Misfortune to those who do not respect treaties. They will be accountable to the whole of Europe”. Whitworth will later state “He was too agitated to prolong the conversation; I therefore made no answer, and he retired to his apartment repeating the last phrase. Two hundred people heard this conversation, and I am persuaded that there was not a single person who did not feel the extreme impropriety of his conduct and the total want of dignity as well as of decency on the occasion´.

BERTHIER LOUIS-ALEXANDRE: (1753-1815) Marshal of France, Prince of Neuchatel. Chief of Staff under Napoleon. D.S., Ml Berthier, one page, folio, Paris, 14th May 1801, to General Commandant of the 5th Division in Strasbourg, in French. On the attractive partially printed document, issued by the War Department, Berthier in his capacity as minister of war, states in part `Officers, whichever their grade is, can only leave their service and post if they are authorized by their General Commandant. But I remind you that according to the military rules, officers cannot abandon their military district areas unless authorized by the Minister only...´ Very small area of paper loss to the left edge not affecting text or signature, and small corner crease, otherwise VG £100 -150

DAVOUT LOUIS NICOLAS: (1770-1823) Marshal of France, Duc d´Auerstaedt and Prince of Eckmuhl. Known as the Iron Marshal, Davout was the only Napoleonic Marshal not to have been defeated in battle by 1815. A double signed very good letter, A.L.S., L D at the base of a L.S., L Davout, two pages, folio, Bruges, 29th October 1804, to General Commandant of the 3rd division at Dunkerke, in French. The letter bears the printed heading of the French Empire, and Davout in his capacity as Marshal of the Empire, General of the Guard of the Emperor, and Commandant in Bruges, instructs `My Dear General, please arrest and take to martial court immediately the soldier of our 12th regiment of infantry who gravely insulted an officer of the Batavian marine and who has provoked and created tension between our troops and our allies ones.´ further advising `It is important that you instruct the Captain in charge of this affair, how important it is that on his official report he shows strength and he condemns any matter which could deteriorate our relationship with allies and our target and cause.´ To the lower part of the front page, below his signature, and to the second page, Davout writes in his hand, in part `I have received my dear General your letter dated 29th October. I am going to order and certify the fair punishment that you have imposed to Mr. Philippin of the 12th [regiment]. If an army was only formed by such kind of individuals, it would be very difficult to lead it..´ further saying `News from England announce that the English, following their custom, have recently attacked the Spanish during peace period, 2 frigates of this nation of pirates have attacked 4 Spanish frigates, two have been captured after a vigorous resistance, the 3rd explosed and the 4th escaped.´ With blank integral leaf. Some light overall, minor age wear, small tears to the edges and upper corner professionally repaired, none affecting the text or signatures. G £400 -600   Charles Etienne Gudin de la Sablonnière (1768-1812) French General of infantry division, and Governor of the castle of Fontainebleau. Died in Russia on the battlefield near Smolensk.

VICTOR-PERRIN CLAUDE: (1764-1841) Marshal of France. Duc de Belluno. D.S., De Belluno, one page, folio, Paris, 3rd May 1822, to Vice Lieutenant François Waldor, in French. The partially printed document, is issued by the Duc de Belluno in his capacity as Minister of War and informs de the 13th Regiment Officer Waldor that he has been appointed by the King to Infantry Lieutenant, and must join his new regiment. Very small corner crease, otherwise VG £80 -100   Louis XVIII (1755-1824) King of France 1795-1824, with a brief interruption during the Hundred Days in 1815.

Victor in his capacity as Marshal of the Empire and Duc de Belluno states `I enclose to you the Legion d´Honneur Grand Councelor´s response regarding the award I requested in favour of your brother, my former aide de camp. Soult, on the war ministry printed stationery, and in his capacity as Minister of War, informs Major Bouvier of the 1st Dragons Regiment that he has been designed to the Beziers Regiment to replace the superior grade officer Bernier. Soult, on the war ministry printed stationery, refers to his predecessor´s order to destroy the Essome dam, order which was later withdrawn by the Interior Ministry, and states `Nevertheless, I inform you that I have forwarded to the Ministry your letter and your report requesting the dam destruction, as factory owner in that area.´ With integral address leaf with remnants of a red wax seal. Some light age wear, small creasing, one pinhole, and very small area of paper loss to the address leaf on the opening. G £150-200

The partially printed document bearing the heading of "Gioacchino Napoleone, King of the Two Sicilies", is a decree containing three articles approved by the Council of State. The decree refers to municipality of Portigliola, Calabria, to the existing deficit and the new tax which will be created. With a very small area of paper loss to the left border not affecting the text or signature, G £100-120

The manuscript document being an invoice due to `Tissier, Marchand bonnetier, fabriquant de bas de S.A.I Madame la Princesse Pauline´ (Weaver, caps Dealer, stocking manufacturer for H.I.H Princess Pauline), for the sum of 149 francs. Annotated by the receiver as paid on 30th November 1811. The document is a report signed by the Minister of the Administration of War, General Lacuée, Count of Cessac, and addressed to His Majesty, informing about the financial needs of two hospices at Lury and Donzy which didn´t fulfil their administrative obligations in due time, and explaining that it was only due to the ignorance of the decree in force. The hospices have accommodated soldiers as requested and are now about to be legally closed. The Minister concludes asking for payment authorization and allowing its continuity as His Majesty has decided in similar previous occasions with other hospices. In his boldly writing, Napoleon adds above his signature `Accordé´ (“Approved”). Dated immediately below, Paris, 14th March 1811. The letter features a Vander Ley watermark. The Emperor explains to his correspondent his decision regarding the new appointed plenipotentiary Minister to the Two Sicilies court, in order to help the two kingdoms relationship, and states `…the Illustrious, loyal and Magnificent, Prince Luigi di Pablonowsky, Commander of the Imperial Order of Leopold of Austria, a distinguished and noble man, with natural wit. He has been appointed by myself as Plenipotentiary Minister..´. The emperor further refers to the excellent relationships between his correspondent and himself, showing deep affection and admiration towards his correspondent. With blank integral leaf. Written to the fourth page `accreditation as Plenipotentiary Minister of the Emperor of Austria to Prince Luigi di Pablonowsky, 13th May 1815´. However, you are responsable for seeing that you will not have to disburse any payment in advance..´ Written to the left bottom border, the order `To the Pollmann? in Cologne at the Rhine. Regarding the hay supplies from the Wesphalian counties demanded by the Imperial and Empire's general Officers you have to agree to everything Münster and Jülich will propose fot the transport. The attractive partially printed document bearing large flourished letters at the heading “Wilhelm, by Grace of God, King of Prussia” is an upgrading patent, and states `We have decided that First Lieutenant Robert Melms from the 2nd Kurhessisch Infantry Regiment, due to his good qualities and knowledge of war, is graciously promoted to Captain of Infantry which is hereby announced and in full effect by this patent. He served Us and Our King´s House with loyalty, faithfully and obedient…he fought by day or night, inland and by sea, when ordered by his superiors. He executed all orders, including war incidences willingly, under threats of life and physical condition with effort and diligence. Furthermore he behaved like a loyal servant and righteous war officer..´ A very large and good bold example signature of the Emperor alongside a large blind embossed seal with coat of arms. With blank integral leaf. Together with a draft patent for a former promotion of same officer Robert Melms, to be attended by Wilhelm II, unsigned, two pages, folio, Berlin, 27th January 1905, in German. The patent stating that Sargent Melms has finished his courses at the Unteroffiziersschule in Bieberich and is now ready for his promotion to first lieutenant of infantry. Called the Fairy Tale King for his extravagant artistic and architectural projects, he is also remembered as the devoted patron of the composer Richard Wagner. The partially printed document, bearing the King´s name with attractive large letters, is an appointment by which the King upgrades first Lieutenant of the 9th Regiment “Wrede”, Edmund Hofler, to Colonel in the 7th Regiment of infantry “Bohnehausen”, stating `..he receives this patent to prove this grace everywhere. Written and carried with Our highest own hand signature and additional printed large war ministry's seal.´ Countersigned by Siegmund Pranckh, Minister of War. MARGARET OF VALOIS: (1553-1615) Queen of France 1589-1599 and Queen of Navarre 1572-1599. Also known as Margaret of France, or Queen Margot. Daughter of King Henry II of France and Catherine de Medici´and sister of Kings of France Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III. Her husband would became Henry IV, the first Bourbon King of France. Very rare L.S., Marguerite, one page, vellum, oblong folio, Usson, 21st August 1602, to Theodore Quinol, in old French. The document entitles in larger letters `Queen Marguerite, Duchess of Valois, Countess of Senlis Agennois, Condomoi, Touergue, Lauraguais, Lady of Quatre Ingeries de Rieux…´ and is the appointment of Theodore Quinol as master of the “Waters and Forests”, stating in part `..By the following, we appoint and bestow you the state and office of Master of the Waters and Forests..´. With some light overall creasing, a series of small tears to the left edge and two original neat slits above and below the signature, although not affecting it, G £500-800   At Usson, Puy-de-Dome, was the Usson Castle, demolished by order of Richelieu, where Marguerite de Valois had her residence. The castle's moto was “Garde le traître et la dent” (Keep the traitor and the tooth). Meaning that such impregnable fortress could only fear the threats of traitors and starvation.
