HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. Important Top Secret wartime D.S., A Hitler (an excellent, dark bold fountain pen ink signature), four pages, folio, Berlin, 6th February 1940. The printed document, in German, is housed in a folder bearing the title Instructions for the Commanders of Navy Ships and Vessels stationed abroad in the event of the outbreak of War, marked Top Secret! at the head, and is introduced by a statement, `As Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the German Nation, I herewith issue the following instructions to the commanders of Navy ships and vessels stationed abroad, and demand, that they will act accordingly with determination, and shall make use of the ships and crews under their command in all circumstances, as the Honour of the Flag and the interests of the German Nation requires`, which is followed by seven instructions, in part, `1. The orders for the peacetime travelling of the ship will be suspended as soon as the Commander is sure that a War has broken out in which the German Nation is involved…..2. The Commander has to ensure the best possible performance of the tasks assigned to the ship. He carries a great and holy responsibility….it is of the highest importance, that he does his utmost to defend the ship and the flag it carries, despite any enemy subterfuge, or rumours he may encounter….3. I expect the Commander to set an example to the crew, by being determined to fight, by showing the right spirit, and by maintaining a strong discipline and devotion to duty…..4. The military use of the ship and its actions will be decided by special operational orders…When the War orders have been carried out, or become impossible due to damage of the ship or other circumstances, the Commander must look for new tasks for crew and ship. I shall not hold the Commander responsible for the loss or damage of his ship, when this occurs during an honourable battle….Surrender of the ship and striking of the flag for the enemy is impossible for a German warship. Sinking honourably is preferable to striking the flag!….6. I shall deal rigorously against any Commander acting in a dishonourable way, or in a way that is likely to disgrace the German Navy. 7. These instructions must be revealed to all those officers of the ship, who might be suitable as an alternative Commander, as soon as the War breaks out, and after leaving the last German port.` A one page appendix to the document lists, in five points, the powers of the Commanders of the Navy`s vessels and vehicles stationed abroad, in the event of the outbreak of War. Countersigned by Erich Raeder (1876-1960) German Admiral, Commander-in-Chief of the Kriegsmarine 1935-43. With blind embossed seal featuring the Nazi Eagle and Swastika. Rare. VG
