A rare and highly sought after document.

William and Mary An Act Declaring the Rights and Liberties of the Subject and Settling the Succession of the Crown. Printed Act of Parliament folio 16pp plus title dated December 16th 1689 contained in a volume of Acts of Parliament from that year. One of the most important and historic Acts in British history. Following the turmoil of the Civil War and the Glorious Revolution which had deposed James II and brought William and Mary to the Throne this was one of the principle measures adopted during the first months of their joint reign. As such it laid down the rights of the individual the preservation of free speech and the freedoms which should be enjoyed by everyone. As such this document set down the basis for constitutional government throughout the world and has been used as the blueprint for similar declarations of rights particularly in the USA. The Act also laid down the rightful succession to the throne - declaring that James II had abdicated the throne (which he had not) and that William and Mary were legally King and Queen reigning jointly (the only time this had ever occurred in British history). It also laid down that the succession should pass to Anne in the event of no legal issue from the joint Monarchs. The Act also established that no Roman Catholic should be allowed to accede to the Throne - a measure which is still in place today. The volume contains a number of other Acts of the year mainly financial. Together with a further group of approx seven unbound Acts from the reign of William and Mary

Literature - Shakespeare The Puritan or the Widow of Watling Street by Mr William Shakespeare London 1734. Engraved frontispiece repaired modern boards 60pp 8vo. A Shakespearean curiosity. The play first published around 1606 was attributed to Shakespeare because the author on the first edition was described as `W S`. As a result it was included in the 1664 edition of the Third Folio of Shakespeare`s plays. It is highly unlikely however that this by Shakespeare and suggestions for its authorship have included Wentworth Smith and more likely Thomas Middleton.
Autograph - Royalty - George III document signed (fine signature) dated December 16th 1790 banishing William Charlton alias William Charrington from the Kingdom for life. Document written in a neat legible hand on 2pp folio paper a little fraying to bottom edge and some slight weakness in the folds (requiring slight conservation) but clear and legible throughout. Countersigned by Lord Granville to base. A most interesting document. The `William Charlton` mentioned here had been convicted of assault and robbery in September 1789 and sentenced to death. This had been commuted to transportation for life to Australia but with this document his sentence was further commuted to banishment. The Australian records show that a William Charlton born in Stourton Wilts sailed to Australia in June 1790 after he had enlisted in the Army. He sailed on the convict ship `Neptune`. His disciplinary record even then was not good being ordered 300 lashes for irregular and disorderly behaviour. However he married a fellow convict Mary Gittos who was 19 when she arrived in Australia. Charlton lived to be 70 and is buried in Holy Trinity Churchyard in Kelso NSW. This is definitely the same man as mentioned in this document. A contemporaneous report in the Sydney Cove Chronicle of June 30th 1790 lists him with his alias in a report of landed convicts. A rare example of a document from this period in which the actual identity of the convicted man can be verified.
