The work is divided into 12 parts, each part with a separately identified number of plates. There are 101 plates in total; each plate has ( later? ) been independently and neatly numbered 1 - 101 with small pasted-on printed numbers in the top right corner. CONDITION REPORT: Lacks boards and plates 91 - 96, but marbled eps remain. Some marginal soiling to some plates. Some pencilled annotations to some plates. The part number has also been neatly added to each plate in the top margin. Generally clean and tight.

Payment to the famous 17th musician Thomas Blagrave – [Charles II] Autograph – the Marquis of Danby treasury warrant signed ‘DanbyÂ’ dated Wallingford House May 14th 1677^ ordering payment of £40/9/2 to ‘Thomas Blagrave one of his Maties musitians...Â’ 1p large folio^ some age dusting and an old tear cutting through a few of the words of the document but not affecting signature^ some fraying at original folds. Laid to a larger card album sheet. An important document in the history of music. Blagrave (1613-1688) was a musician (on the cornet) and composer who became a Royal musician in 1638^ playing for Charles IÂ’s ‘sagbutts and hautboyesÂ’. He then went on to play for Oliver Cromwell and then finally for Charles II at the Restoration. He is mentioned in Pepys Diary.

Important Royal Warrant in the history of the Postal Service – William III – autograph fine letter signed ‘William RÂ’ at head addressed to the Solicitor General^ 2pp large legal folio on paper (appearing to lack a third and final page carrying the date and countersignature^ but the letter is complete)^ granting a pension of £3^500 a year to the Marquis of Carmarthen (later the Duke of Leeds)^ to be paid out of the revenues of the Post Office. Although lacking the third page which would carry the date^ this can be accurately dated to 1694. Carmarthen had a most chequered history. This document represents the highest spot of his career when he was created the Duke of Leeds. Shortly afterwards however^ he was accused of Jacobinism and was largely stripped of his many offices.

Oliver Cromwell pardons a counterfeiter at the end of a major financial scandal – document in the name of Cromwell as Lord Protector dated November 16th 1654 ordering the release from Newgate Prison of Abraham Graynger^ a counterfeiter on the payment of a fine of £5^000 ‘with sufficient sureties not to act againe in the counterfetting of debentures or other matters whereby the Common Wealth may be charged...Â’ 1p folio on paper^ some age browning^ weakness in folds and some foxing but fully legible throughout. A document which concluded a major financial scandal. Granger^ together with his co-conspirators^ his brother John Granger^ William Broome^ Captain Nicholas Greenway^ John Stephens^ John Bond and John Cotton hit upon a scheme of issuing counterfeit bonds and bills of exchange^ thus defrauding the City of London and various English Counties of the huge sum of £3^000 (more than a quarter of a million in todayÂ’s money). Granger and his confederates paid a high price for their crime. Granger was put into the pillory twice and had both his ears cut off before being sent for hard labour for four years. He also had all his assets seized. One wonders however^ where he might have obtained the money to pay his fine of £5^000 (almost half a million today).

Maritime [Charles II] manuscript document dated 1671 being a petition to Charles II by Francis Cox^ a mariner from Dartmouth for a pension of £10 a year for life because of his long service in the navy and the wounds he received : ‘...wounded very much in two fights against Holland first with Prince Ruporte in the royall James: next the last of all ye four days battle was I wounded in 3 places at once aboard the old James...Â’ The document is appended with a note saying that the King had been ‘moved in favour of this petitionÂ’ and agreeing to the pension to be paid. 1p folio on paper ^ one small area of age discolouration but otherwise in fine fresh condition

The ‘Old Pretender’ proposes to Queen Anne that he should succeed her as King. James Francis Stuart – ‘James III’ – the ‘Old Pretender’ important contemporaneous copy of a letter from James Francis Stuart to Queen Anne^ dated1712^ proposing that he should succeed her as King^ 3.5pp folio^ split in the middle (easily repaired in our view)^ otherwise unblemished. An important historical document in the history of the intrigue which followed the Glorious Revolution and subsequently led to the arrival of the Hanoverian Dynasty (which still occupies the throne today). In this letter^ James Francis Stuart^ writing to his half sister^ Queen Anne^ proposes that she should support him in his claim to the throne^ which^ even after everything which had taken place in the previous 25 years was still considered a possibility. Crucially in this letter he states that he would be prepared to convert to the Protestant religion adding : ‘...whatever shall be my own private opinion it is my unalterable resolution to make the law of the land the rule of my Government and to preserver the Church of England as by law established...’

The ‘South Sea BubbleÂ’ was one of the greatest financial scandals of all time in which investors lost millions of pounds on the fictitiously inflated expectation of the South Sea Company. Documents relating to the event are somewhat uncommon

The conquest of Java 1811 – Military autograph – Lord Minto autograph letter signed dated Malacca June 14th 1811 reporting on the build up of his military strength and adding : ‘…the passage from hence to Java will not be attended with the difficulties that were once apprehended from the monsoon as this season of the year and we hope to perform it in four or at most five week. Everything continues flattering in our prospect to far & I trust we may not unreasonably indulge a sanguine hope of success…’1p 4to attached to a large folio album leaf together with a further als of Minto dated 1807. Minto captured Java later that year.

The Navy of Charles II – fine autograph letter signed by Sir William Guernsey addressed to ‘My Lord and Gentlemen’ undated but dated in a later hand as 1679^ giving detailed report on the state of the navy on the south coast and the Isle of Wight. 2pp folio^ a little browned and very slight fraying at left hand edge^ otherwise in good condition. ‘I have received both yours of ye 24th to what you mention concerning Sir Robert Holmes. I have received as yet nothing from him neither anything from ye secretary in relation to my boat…in answer to your second letter in relation to ye ship 1000 are going forward with her and have got up all our standings^ riggings caps and tops^ the coakers are on board about her sides…I remember that last summer that severall mates and misshipmen of most ships was dissatisfied about there receiving but able seamans pay for the whole time ye ship was sitting and did discourse that they would stay on shore until ye ship was fitted and that good men would not want imployment at any time …’

17th c ms curious ms written out on two leaves of folio paper^ dated 1696^ bearing a number of passages^ possibly some in riddles. The writer^ apparently named Naboth Goodenough and from the context of some of the passages a strict Puritan writes in a sort of ‘pijin’ English^ referring to places such as ‘Jerusalem’ as ‘Jerosluffam’ – and appears to write in a rather paranoid idiom. Together with an als of Samuel Wilberforce (‘Soapy Sam’) and a French ms on 12 leaves of vellum (probably a late 17th property transaction).

English Civil War - The Treason Act of the Commonwealth: An Act declaring what offences shall be adjudged Treason^ July 17th 1649. Folio 6pp unbound good condition. The first Treason Act under the Commonwealth whereby it is declared that anyone writing^ printing or openly declaring that the government is ‘tyrannical^ usurped or unlawful or that the commons in parliament assembled are not the supreme authority of this nation^ or shall plot^ contrive or endeavour to stir up or raise force against the government...’ shall be adjudged guilty of High Treason. This is an interesting document as it fails to condemn communication with the exiled King Charles II which no doubt it should have done^ and also that it is issued in the name of the ‘Keepers of the Liberty of England’. This was a strange interim body drawn from Parliament which was the effective supreme power at the time. Its very existence showed the fragile nature of the governing powers after the demise of the Monarchy. It didn’t last that long.

(1825-1889) who served as Lord of the Admiralty and Governor of Tasmania (1869-1874).

World War II. An album of amateur photographs belonging to Molly Parker, covering her conscription and war service, including numerous images of London during the first air raid, the noted bombing of Dolphin Square, and subsequent social engagements, landscape folio [c.1938-1950] Molly Parker (b.1920) was the only daughter of Captain Harry Parker, owner of the Parker Gallery, London. In December 1940, a German aircraft dropped a 2000lb British bomb on London, thought to have been salvaged at Dunkirk. Dolphin Square suffered a direct hit, with many casualties.

Benares Illustrated, in a Series of Drawings, Presentation Copy, inscribed on the front paste down `Miss Isabella Fane from the author - Calcutta 1836`, 28 lithographed plates on India paper, 6 engraved plates, without engraved map, some very light browning, contemporary half morocco gilt, slightly rubbed, folio, Calcutta: Baptist Mission Press, 1833 Isabella Fane (1804-1880) was the daughter of General Sir Henry Fane (1778-1840) and she accompanied her father to India upon his appointment in 1835 as Commander-in-Chief and spent three years acting as his hostess. Her letters and journal from this period were later published.
