(MACAU - PORTUGUESE MISSIONARY) JOSE ESPINHAJOSE ESPINHA (1722 - 1788) Portuguese missionary in China, the self-styled vicar to the Bishop of Macao; also served as geographer to the Court of Emperor Qienlong. An early handwritten copy of a letter from him, 1p., folio, circa 1775, addressed to the Chinese authorities. Argues against a proposal by fellow missionary, Hsiang Ping-jen, who had suggested to change the system by which imperial funds were allocated to each of the four congregations separately, to a system by which the total sum of the funds to be divided equally among the missionaries on an individual basis. Espinha makes several arguments against such a change, and in doing so offers details about the financial organization of the congregations. Qienlong (1711-99) was the sixth Emperor of the Manchu-led Qing Dynasty. Written in Chinese, on rice paper. Split horizontal fold and other tears. Neatly penned. This was very likely a retained copy kept for Espinhha's reference, or a contemporary copy sent to missionaries or other concerned parties present at the time.

LOG OF THE EAST INDIA COMPANY SHIP "ROYAL CHARLOTTE" BOUND FOR CANTONBound volume, approx. 176pp. legal folio, an original handwritten log book documenting the 1802 voyage of the British East India Company ship ROYAL CHARLOTTE, carrying a shipment of lead and other materials from London to Canton (modern Guangzhou) in China. The volume is bound in brown leather boards with an embossed floral design, with the initials of the ship "R C" and the phrase "To China" burned into the front cover. The first six pages of the log, completed in the style of a standard journal, detail the outfitting of the ship at Northfleet on the Thames, from January to March of 1802. After putting to sea on March 30 in company with the East India Company ships BRUNSWICK and GLATTON, the format of the entries changes to a tabular accounting of the hourly course of the Royal Charlotte and the condition of the winds, with a space for other comments and observations. The passage to China is relatively uneventful, save for several instances in which the ship's seamen are flogged or put in irons for drunkenness, theft, and assaulting superior officers, and the loss of the topmasts in a gale, which requires her to put into the Bay of All Saints in Brazil for repairs. She arrives in Canton on September 5, where she discharges her cargo and makes necessary repairs. On October 25, the ship's fourth officer dies in the city, and is interred at French Island. She takes on a shipment of tea for the return voyage to England, and puts to sea again on November 6, with the notation: "Adieu to China for some time". During the voyage home, a passenger, the captain's steward, and the cooper's mate all die of unstated causes and are buried at sea. Again, several seamen have to be confined or flogged, including Charles Connor, who repeatedly attempts to incite mutiny amongst his fellow sailors. He is flogged several times for his behavior, but eventually proves to be such a problem that he is confined aboard the warship HMS ROMNEY when the Royal Charlotte calls at St. Helena. The ship eventually arrives at Plymouth on April 13, 1803. The British East India Company was founded in 1600, and over the next two and a half centuries came to account for over half of the world's trade. They were an important force for European colonization in Asia, and held autonomous control over much of India through private military forces. The volume bears several old accession numbers, as well as the foxing and toning one would expect from a document of this age, else very good.

"TIE CHIU VOCABULARY"Significant unpublished early manuscript dictionary of a dialect of Chinese, "Tie Chiu Vocabulary", hand-written by WILLIAM DEAN (1807-1895), an American Baptist missionary who served in Bangkok and Hong Kong from 1833 to 1884, translating the Bible and other Christian texts into Chinese. This volume, approx. 260pp. legal folio, is a dictionary of the Teochew dialect of Chinese, which is spoken in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong, in Southeastern China, and which preserves many Archaic Chinese pronunciations and vocabulary. Dean, who appears to have appropriated a ledger book for his purposes, groups together characters utilizing the same base and having similar connotations. These characters, likely executed by a Chinese collaborator, are recorded in black calligraphic ink in one column, with the base character in red at the top of each page, to which Dean adds the pronunciation in the column to the left of each character, and a definition in English to the right. In this way, Dean and his assistants record more than four thousand expressions in the Teochew dialect. The volume has been placed in a modern binding of brown leather. The edges of the pages bear moderate worm damage, and noticeable toning and foxing, but remain perfectly legible. The original brown leather spine covering, with the partial title and the author's name in gilt, is also present.

WWI - German Diary. A monumental fair copy transcript of the letters of Walter Berlin of the 8th Royal Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment, written to his mother Lina Berlin in Nuremburg, 1914-18, 9 volumes, written up 1933-37 for Walter's 50th birthday, neatly written in purple ink in a large and legible but very difficult hand to rectos and versos throughout, beginning at the start of the war in August 1914 and writing almost daily until the end of the war in 1918, 1914 as 1 volume, each year thereafter bound as 2 volumes, a total of approximately 3,500 numbered pages, a few scattered diagrams, some original letters, postcards, telegrams, memos, a menu, etc. tipped in, contemporary brown boards, each titled in gilt 'Weltkrieg' with year and part numbering, rubbed, one spine near detached, folio (33 x 22 cm) An incredible and thorough record of a German Jewish artillery officer's complete war. His regiment was on the Western Front and engaged actively from the beginning to the end of the war. It was present at the Battle of Alsace Lorraine, Verdun, Battle of the Somme, Battle of Arras and the big battles of 1918. Dr Walter Berlin (1887-1963) was born in Nuremberg. He studied law, obtaining his doctorate in 1913. Throughout the First World War he served in the 8th Royal Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment and was discharged as captain and battery commander. He was awarded the Iron Cross First and Second Class and the Bavarian Order of Military Merit Fourth Class with Crown and Swords. He also had the badge signifying that he'd been wounded. From 1919 Dr Walter Berlin practised as a solicitor in Nuremberg, and actively represented Jewish interests. He was a chairman of the Nuremburg branch, and a member of the National Board, of the Central Union of German Citizens of Jewish Faith (the 'Central-Verein') whose main purpose was the fight against anti-Semitism. In this capacity he gave evidence, in 1929, against the Nazi 'Gauleiter' Julius Streicher before a jury in a Nuremburg court. Streicher was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for incitement to class hatred. After the Nazis came to power in January 1933, Jewish lawyers were forbidden to represent 'Aryan' clients and Walter Berlin acted exclusively for Jews. In his efforts to help endangered Jews Walter Berlin was often supported by the Nuremburg police president, Dr Benno Martin. Later, during what became known as the 'Kristallnacht' on 9th and 10th November 1938, Berlin was arrested by SA-men and severely beaten resulting in the loss of one eye. He was released from prison at the end of November but had his right to practise as a lawyer taken away. In April 1939 Walter and his wife Rose emigrated to England, reuniting with their two children towards the end of the year in London. In London he joined fellow refugees from Germany and founded the Belsize Square Synagogue. Initially unemployed, he became a fire watcher during the Second World War for the owners of a London office building. His main task was to make German incendiary bombs harmless during air raids and for this he was awarded the British Defence medal. He took up accountancy learning the profession in the office building which he guarded. He worked as an accountant until the end of his life, dying in London on 21 August 1963 aged 76. (9)
