SINCLAIR UPTON: (1878-1968) American Writer, winner of Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1943. T.L.S., Sinclair, one page, folio, Pasadena, California, May 26th 1925 to Dr. Gerson. Sinclair explains 'I have a letter from Sam Weisenberg, who is a tireless worker for the Socialist Party. He tells me that they have applied for the Bowl in July for the Debs meeting, but that he has not heard from you about the matter. I am sure there must be some misunderstanding about it, as no organization with which you are connected would possibly wish to shut off Debs'. Slight age related wear and tearing to the edges. Together with A.L.S., Upton, one page, 8vo, Monrovia, California, 3rd September 1963 to Martin [Birnbaum]. Sinclair writes in full 'No word from you & I'm worried. Do write. Want to invite you to the “Sinclair day” at Lilly Library, Bloomington, Ind. Oct 18.' Very light vertical folds. Accompanied by, A.L.S., Upton, one page, 8vo, Monrovia, California, 21st November 1963 to Martin [Birnbaum]. A brief message stating how sorry Sinclair was a not being able to meet with his correspondent at the Lilly Library event. Also included is an envelope written in Sinclair's hand addressed to Martin Birnbaum (15th November 1965), a typed letter, one page, folio, from Indiana University, 14th August 1963 to Martin Birnbaum, reading 'I have been asked by Mr. Upton Sinclair to invite you to Bloomington…Mr. Sinclair will deliver a Convocation Lecture.' Concluding 'Mr Sinclair speaks and writes of you with such affection that I am sure that he means this invitation to be more than a formality.' Some minor stains and age wear. Finally, there is also a facsimile copy of the letter sent by Sinclair to Albert Camus on 18th April 1960, along with Camus' reply. At the head of Camus' letter Sinclair has written in blue ink 'From Albert Camus'. This six page 8vo appears to be promotional material as it also contains reviews. G to VG, 6Dr. T. Percival Gerson (1872-1960) American Physician. In 1918 Gerson helped organise a meeting that would eventually lead to the establishment of the Hollywood Bowl theatre in Los Angeles.Eugene V. Debs (1855-1926) American Unionist and Founder of the Socialist Party of America. Martin Birnbaum (1878-1970) American Author. Sinclair wrote the introduction to Birnbaums 1960 work 'The Last Romantic: The Story Of More Than Half A Century In The World Of Art'.

GALLIENI JOSEPH: (1849-1916) French Military Commander, Minister of War. As Military Governor of Paris he played an important role in the First Battle of the Marne. T.L.S., Gallieni, one page, folio, Paris, 5th November 1907, to Military Staff, 3e Bureau (2), on printed stationery of the 14th Army, in French. Gallieni instructs his staff in regards the new military hospital in Grenoble which is currently under construction 'I have the honour of drawing your attention on the following points… the opinion of the Inspector Doctor, Director of Health of the 14th Army Corps, that it is necessary to keep bastion IX as garrison infirmary to care for the men with mumps. These patients… could indeed see their disease worsen… if they were transported to the new military hosptal.' Concluding 'Due to the remoteness of the new hospitla in the centre of the city of Grenoble, it is absolutely necessary to house the Head Doctor and administrative officer in the same hospital.' NAPOLEONIC WARS: Partially printed Official Document headed 'République Française', being sent from the 'Conseil D'Administration', folio, Paris, 1802 (August/September). The document attests to the military service of a rifleman in the infantry, stating his name, age, place of birth, whilst also describing his physical attributes. It continues in giving the dates (using the Republican calender) of his service and the campaigns in which he has been involved. These are listed as including Egypt and Syria 'avec le gen'al Bonaparte'. The document concludes in stating that during his service he conducted himself 'de maniere a se concilier l'approbation de ses superieurs et l'estime de ses camrades', in a manner that won the approval of his superiors and the respect of his comrades. The document, to the foot, has seven (unknown) signatures of endorsement. Slight age related wear and minor discolouration, paper repair to small section at the head and to the top right corner on the verso, not affecting text or signatures, otherwise G.The French Campaign in Egypt and Syria (1798-1801) was Napoleon Bonaparte's campaign in Ottoman Egypt and Ottoman Syria, proclaimed to defend French trade interests, weaken Britain's access to British India, and to establish scientific enterprise in the region.

LEE TENG-HUI: (1923- ) President of the Republic of China and Chairman of the Kuomintang (1988-2000), sometimes referred to as the 'Father of Taiwan's Democracy'. T.L.S., Zeng hui Lee, two pages, folio, Taiwan, 3rd September 1996, to the Honorable Paul Simon, on official stationery of the President of the Republic of China. Lee wishes his correspondent a happy retired life, thanking him for his 'long-standing staunch friendship for the Republic of China.' Continuing 'Throughout your long years of service, you have rendered us strong and steadfast support in many ways. You call for an ROC seat in the U.N. and other international organization's, you speak highly of our democratization, and you call for peace across the Taiwan Straits.' Concluding 'I am impressed by your family's enduring association with the Chinese people and the efforts you have made on behalf of the interests of the Chinese-American community. You have won admiration for your championing the cause of peace and security in East Asia.' VGPaul Martin Simon (1928-2003) American Politician, supporter of Taiwan and opposed United States policy to isolate Taiwan. He helped convince President Clinton to allow Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui to visit the United States. His father was a Lutheran minister and missionary to China.

SITWELL EDITH: (1887-1964) British Poet and Critic. A.L.S., Edith Sitwell, two pages, folio, Hotel de la Bourdonnais, Paris, 1st March 1930, to Mr. Allden. Sitwell thanks her correspondent for his charming letter and invitation 'I shall have loved to lunch with you - but do you see where I am!' Continuing 'I shall be in Paris till the third or fourth week in November, and then shall be returning to London…' Further adding 'If you would so kind as to ask me again when I return I should love to come - Do you have my telephone number? It is Park 2634 and the best time to ring me up is about 10.15 or 10.30, because the afternoon is my working time.' Minor age related wear, one very small hole beneath the correspondent's name, not affecting text or signature, otherwise VG

MILCH ERHARD: (1892-1972) German Field Marshal and Air Inspector General during World War II. D.S., Milch, one page, folio, Berlin, 7th February 1939, in German. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, appoints Friedrich Scheller to be a Superintending Technical Inspector working within the Civil Service of the Reich and states, in part, 'I ratify this document in the expectation that the person named in it will fulfil his oath of service loyally and the duties of his post conscientiously, and will justify the confidence shown in him by this nomination. At the same time he may be assured of the special protection of the Fuehrer and Reichchancellor'. Signed by Milch at the conclusion in his capacity as Reich Minister for Aviation alongside a blind embossed seal. [FLEMING IAN]: (1908-1964) British Author, creator of James Bond. A partially printed Deutsche Bundespost Telegram finished in typescript sent from Fleming in London, 23rd December 1954 to (Anthony) Terry in Bonn. Fleming sends a cordial greeting 'Mercury Wishes You Happiest Christmas Et thanks For Splendid Service During 1954. Fleming.' With Christmas illustrations to the front and rear page, to an overall size of 8 x 12. With two file holes at the left margin. Together with a two page, folio, facsimile copy of a typed memo entitled 'SUNDAY TIMES COVERAGE - A circular addressed to Selected Correspondents'. Written by Fleming as the The Sunday Times Foreign Manager (July 1954). The document details ways in which the Editor of The Sunday Times wishes his correspondents to 'increase the variety of the foreign news coverage of his paper and, in addition to the essential coverage from Washington, Paris, Bonn and Tokyo, to give his readers a broader view of the foreign "scene" as opposed to foreign "affairs"…' Continuing 'There is also one other matter which the Editor has asked me to stress to all correspondents and that is his desire for more attractive prose in his paper… We wish to create in the "Sunday Times" the more cultivated approach to news of, for instance, the "Manchester Guardian" rather than the strait-forward reporting style of, for instance, "The Times" and "The Daily Telegraph"…' With a hand written annotation in an unidentified hand, written and signed on behalf of Fleming, to the head of the first page, 'For your information. Naturally this doesn't apply to you as you are in touch by phone. Ian'. With two files holes at the left margin and a single staple to the top left corner, minor tears and creases to the head, not affecting the text. RICKOVER HYMAN G.: (1900-1986) United States Navy Admiral, the 'Father of the Nuclear Navy'. T.L.S., H G Rickover, one page, folio, At Sea, North Atlantic, 3rd October 1967, to The Honorable Seymour Halpern, on stationery headed USS GATO. Rickover informs his correspondent that 'We are returning from the first sea trials of the USS GATO (SSN615), our 32nd attack type nuclear submarine. The ship completed all test, including full power operation, both surface and submerged.' He continues in explaining the history of the name USS GATO, its first commission in 1941, Admiral Halsey's nickname for the vessel of "The Goalkeeper', though to its use as a Naval Reserve Training Ship. Continuing 'The new GATO's primary wartime mission is to detect, track, and destroy enemy submarines… The unlimited cruising radius, high speed, and quietness provided by nuclear propulsion, combined with deep submergence capability and advanced weapons and electronics systems, make her a most effective antisubmarine weapon.' Very slight age related wear and very small tear to the foot, otherwise VGUSS GATO, Thresher/Permit-class nuclear submarine known as the 'Goal Keeper', commissioned 25th January 1968 and decommissioned on 25th April 1996. She was the first nuclear-powered submarine to completely circumnavigate South America. Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) American Politician.

MURRAY GEORGE: (1772-1846) British General. D.S., G Murray, three pages, folio, Cambray, France, 4th June 1817, to a Gentleman. Interesting document concerning the second Treaty of Paris (1815) which provided for the occupation of certain fortresses by foreign troops. Murray informs his correspondent 'It has been agreed upon with Count Woronzaw that the Russian Troops about to move towards the coast in palce of encamping shall occupy Cantonments between Bailleul and Bergues.' Continuing 'Enclosed is a note of the Cantonments in which the troops will be accommodated on the march and also of the Cantonments to be occupied permanently until their embarkation take place.' Further adding 'You will be so good as submit these arrangements to Sir Henry Fane, in order that he may be so good as cause the British Cavalry to vacate in time the places mentioned in the enclosures therewith transmitted.' Together with, two 'notes' as called for in the document entitled 'Emplacement Les Colonnes Russes', two pages, folio, and 'Marche Route des Troops', one page, folio. Both signed by Captain N.G. Moore (both with age related wear, otherwise G). With age related wear and minor creasing, discolouration to the head, a 1.5 x 1.5 tear to the top right corner, not affecting text or signature. G, 3Mikhail Vorontsov (Woronzaw) (1782-1856) Russian Prince and Field-Marshal, renowned for his success in the Napoleonic wars, and most famous for his participation in the Caucasian War from 1844 to 1853Sir Henry Fane (1778-1840) British General, commanded brigades under Duke of Wellington during several battles of the Peninsular War, and served both as a member of Parliament and Commander-in-Chief of India.

WORLD CHESS: One sheet, folio, Groningen, 1946. Bearing the printed letterhead 'Staunton Wereldschaaktournooi Groningen 1946'. Sheet, in light green, containing six Dutch hand stamped 'Flying Dove' postage stamps of various values, surrounded by twenty signatures, being those of the chess tournament players. With light folds, not affecting the signatures. VGGroningen 1946 was the first major international chess tournament to be held after World War II. Held at Groningen in August and September 1946, it saw Mikhail Botvinnik win the tournament a half point ahead of former World Champion Max Euwe. It was Botvinnik's first outright victory outside of the Soviet Union and Euwe's last major success.

OSBORN ROBERT: (1904-1994) American Satiric Cartoonist, Illustrator and Author. Artist of the hapless WWII character 'Dilbert' and later known for his caricatures of presidents from Lyndon Johnson through to Ronald Reagan. A.L.S., Bob Osborn, ten pages, folio, Salisbury, Connecticut, 14th May 1994, to Herbert Mitgang. Osborn prepares his correspondent 'Brace! For a long-winded reply to your kind letter.' Further complimenting Mitgang '…your review of the Hand biography is excellent and it ought to rightfully inspire people to buy & read it.' Continuing 'One Sunday night on the Harlem R.R. “Rattler” heading for N.Y. I saw Mr. Hand 2 seats ahead facing me… Luckily I had a 10” drawing pad and a black pencil and started to draw that superb, integrated worn… compelling face. The impression of him was so strong the drawing worked. It is now in the Beinecke Library… along with 1,000 of pictures I did… & liked… from 1910 on. Lucky Osbo!' Further explaining 'that the human face… prints relentlessly… the acts & characteristics of a person's life and behaviour (see Nixon's… or the cheap, shallow mug of that Irish clown Ronny R. or his vapid star-crossed wife.' Concluding by discussing the image of Nixon in The New Republic and The Village Voice and in conclusion, reflects on his health 'bed ridden, blood transfused… & now suffering from the eyes…' In neat bold script, accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Osborn. [TRISTAN DA CUNHA]: A scarce original War date edition of The Tristan Times, one page, folio, South Atlantic Ocean, 24th April 1943. The mimeographed newspaper (originally sold at a cost of '3 cigarettes or 4 potatoes') was edited by A. B. Crawford and reports on various recent events during World War II including the general Allied offensive in Tunisia, the sinking of two Italian destroyers in the Sicilian Chanel, the war against Russia 'There has been some fierce fighting in the Kuban district and the Russians have made some advance, German losses in men have been heavy', and in the S.W. Pacific 'There has been no land - but usual air - activity in this part of the world. It has recently been revealed that the American pilots who were captured after an air raid on Tokio were murdered by the Japanese'. The paper also features a few paragraphs of news from Tristan da Cunha including 'Islanders are reminded that by 1st May no family may possess more than 3 geese'. VGDuring World War II Tristan Da Cunha was used as a top secret Royal Navy weather and radio station codenamed HMS Atlantic Isle to monitor Nazi U-boats and shipping movements in the South Atlantic ocean.

ELIZABETH II: (1926- ) Queen of the United Kingdom 1952- . D.S., Elizabeth R, as Queen, at the head, one page, oblong folio, Court of Saint James, 2nd November 1960. The partially printed document approves the appointment made by the President of the Republic of Ecuador for Mr. Frank Bottrill to be Consul at Nassau, Bahamas and allows Bottrill 'all the Privilages, Immunities and Advantages' belonging to his post. Countersigned at the foot by Alec Douglas-Home (1903-1995) British Prime Minister 1963-64, Foreign Secretary 1960-63, 1970-74. With blind embossed seal at the head. The signature of the Queen is very slightly faded, although perfectly legible. Some age wear at the folds and with slight traces of former mounting to the verso. About VG
