Military – Afghan Wars – Lt Col Dennie fine ms document being a long list of charges brought against Lt Col William Dennie of 13th Light Infantry at Agra by the order of Maj Gen James Watson Commander in Chief India. A total of 28 charges written in a neat secretarial hand on 13pp folio. A remarkably long list of charges against a senior officer. Dennie is charged with deserting his men bullying falsifying muster rolls using offensive language etc. Clearly Dennie was one of those heroes who didn’t suffer fools gladly and followed his own military agendas. But a hero Dennie certainly was as he later played an important role in the storming of Kabul at the start of the first Afghan War his account of the campaign was published in 1843. A remarkable and intriguing document which reveals considerable information on the British army at this time.

Royalty – Queen Adelaide Queen Consort of William IV two ms account books being the personal accounts of Queen Adelaide 18 & 20pp folio respectively (two pages ripped out from one and half a page torn out of the other – rest intact) dated from April 1844 to 1845 and from April 1847 to March 1848 (the year she died) with loosely inserted summary on a bifolium dated June 25th 1848. Both written in German. One has a letter tipped in being a letter of commendation for a personal servant to Queen Adelaide signed by E Ballinger Housekeeper to the late Queen. Of the greatest rarity. Personal accounts for leading members of the Royal Family rarely if ever appear on the market. As these have been drawn up in German it would seem likely that they refer to Queen Adelaide’s German accounts though she is clearly referred to on the title pages as the Queen of Great Britain not her German title of Princess of Saxe-Meiningen. In fine fresh condition

Lot 170

WWI – Royal Flying Corps record book of 74th Squadron – London Colney Royal Flying Corps written out in a neat hand contained in a large folio ledger fully filled approx 245 pp covering the period December 1917 to March 1918. A remarkable survivor from WWI and providing considerable information on the day to day operations of an RFC squadron at the height of WWI when aerial warfare was beginning to become a decisive weapon. During the period covered by the ledger the Commanding Officer was Major L J Fiennes and clearly the squadron was an advanced training unit providing higher instruction prior to their dispatch to France or in some cases re-instruction for pilots coming back from the Front. The ledger records are divided into two parts: operational and administration. The former dealing with officer responsibilities including programme of work including flying gunnery buzzing and anti-gas and the latter dealing with attachments and leaves including many American officers and cadets. There are courts of enquiry into accidents and deaths discipline punishments equipment aeroplanes and engines etc. 74 Squadron was formed on July 1st 1917 at Northolt and subsequently moved to London Colney.
