Housed in two original exquisite full tree calf traveling library cases resembling stacked folio books, stamped in blind and in gilt, red morocco spine labels, lightly rubbed and worn; marbled edges with matching interior marbling, and green cloth lining (marbling faded but matches that of the individual volumes); original ad for this set, as well as one for Bell's British Theatre, mounted on lid of each case respectively; sliding compartments on spines contain hidden locking mechanism, original key included. From the library of Melicent Ballard, and with her charming 18th-century engraved pictorial book-plate on front paste-down of all 109 volumes (included in "Ladies' Book-plates" by Norna Labouchere, 1895).A rare, and remarkably well preserved, set of English publisher John Bell's "Poets of Great Britain", complete in their two original traveling library cases resembling four folio volumes. From a 1784 ad for this set: "Two Cases are constructed in the shape and appearance of two folio volumes, which contain the whole of this great collection, and are well adapted for travelling in the seat of a post chaise, or for library furniture." A late George III cross banded mahogany serpentine sideboard, attributed to Gillows, inlaid with boxwood lines, the shaped top above a frieze drawer and shaped fluted apron flanked by deep drawers, one fitted with divisions for bottles, raised on fluted tapering legs headed by leaf capitals, 68½ x 24in. (175 x 61cm.), 37in. (94cm.) high.. * Provenance: Bonhams New Bond Street, Fine English Furniture, and Works of Art, 15th June 2011, Lot 163. Earlier: The Child Family, Colwinston House, South Glamorgan.. ** This piece is closely related to a design for a 'Side Board Table for Mr Stuart Johnson' in Gillows Estimate Sketch Books dated 25 November 1786 (folio 456, reel 344/93). The leaf carved capitals on the legs can be seen in a Gillows design for a card table dated February 1799 (folio 499, reel 344/93). . Very similar sideboards were sold at Sotheby's London, 20 November 2007, lot 140 (£29,300, including premium), Sotheby's London, 9 July 1999, lot 103 (£34,500 including premium) and Christie's, Simon Sainsbury, The Creation of an English Arcadia, lot 94 (£40,000, hammer price).. *Old shrinkage crack to LH side of top which has been wax filled and two other fine shrinkage cracks to centre of top. Centre drawer later baize lined. Small patch of very old damage to veneer to LH side of centre drawer, which has been wax filled and spot stained. Both deep drawers have similar old wax or tiny plugged holes aroound lock, probably from lock replacement at some time. Handles are later 19th century replacements (plugged holes from originals visible). A few minor veneer repairs and small repair to edge moulding at top of left front leg. No repairs to legs, structure appears very sound. Top has been repolished in the past 20-30 years
