WINEHOUSE AMY: (1983-2011) English Singer. Rare A.L.S., Amy x, one page, folio, n.p. (Saint Lucia), 13th January 2009 (‘4 days til our 20 months’), to Blakela [her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil]. The singer writes a powerful, affectionate letter to her lover, in full, ‘My baby I can’t help but wonder if you don’t love me the way I love you but I KNOW we’re cemented forever Blake LIKE GLUE and I’m still in LOVE with you boy, I’m coming back for you my sweet. Blake I ain’t never ever divorcing you, I want your kids you know this. I ain’t NEVER having some lucky baby with a next man, there are no men for me, you are one in a lion of a man. The other night (last night as it goes) I was stalking my way up to the gym being a lioness anxious + terrified of my lion dropping out of the race, and - just as I reached the top - the band downstairs started playing PUT YOUR HEAD ON MY SHOULDER and I ran back for ya. I’m running back for ya Blake of mine’. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Winehouse to Blake [Fielder] Civil at H.M.P. Edmunds Hill in Suffolk and post marked at Saint Lucia, 26th January [2009]. Slightly irregularly torn at the upper edge, and with a few apparently unrelated ink annotations in an unidentified head at the top of the page, none of which affect the text or signature. VG

COATES ERIC: (1886-1957) English Composer, composed the famous main title march of the film score to The Dam Busters (1954). T.L.S., Eric Coates, one page, oblong 8vo, London, 21st February 1954, to Goldilocks. Coates states that he is sorry to hear that his correspondent has been ill and wishes them a speedy recovery, adding 'The weather really has been terrible but I managed to get through the cold spell without anything untoward happening, fortunately'. Together with a dark fountain pen ink signature and several additional words by Coates on a page removed from an autograph album, dated September 1936 in his hand. Also including an unsigned printed folio copy of the sheet music for The Three Bears, a phantasy for the pianoforte, published by Chappell & Co. Ltd., London, 1926. G to VG, 3

BLYTON ENID: (1897-1968) British Children's Writer. An interesting T.L.S., Enid Blyton, one page, folio, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, 10th July 1952, to Messrs. G. Ricordi & Co. Ltd. Blyton informs her correspondents that a Company is in the process of being formed 'for the purpose of granting Licences in respect of the character “Little Noddy”' and continues to state that the Company will grant an exclusive licence to Ricordi & Co., so that they may publish the lyrics to thirteen songs which Blyton lists and which include Come to Toyland, Noddy's Hat, Noddy's Morning Song, Noddy is Lost and Noddy's Car. Blyton further states that the licence will be for a period of ten years and sets out five conditions including a royalty payment of 10% 'of the marked selling price on every copy of the said Lyrics…sold in Great Britain…and that you will pay in respect of all other countries a royalty at the rate of 5% on the said selling price. That in respect of any reproduction made on any mechanical instrument or used in sound film production, you will pay…a royalty of one-third of all monies received by you…It is understood that you will, as soon as practicable, publish a first edition of not less than 3,000 copies…' A letter of good content illustrating the business side of Blyton's work. POLE REGINALD: (1500-1558) English Cardinal of the Catholic Church, the last Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury 1556-58 during the Counter Reformation. Rare L.S., Reg Carlus. Polus, one page, folio, Carpentras, 16th April 1539, to 'Your Holiness'. Pole states that he received the letter from his correspondent 'through which I learnt that the letters which I wrote from Toledo on the 22nd February only arrived on the 7th April, which I find astonishing' and continues 'I don't know what could have caused such delay. Through no fault of my own, I must appear negligent towards Your Holiness in this extremely important matter, about which I am most anxious and solicitous, as I should be in any case. This will have some bearing on my letters….and then, in relation to the Abbot, who left here on the 8th, and very much hoped to be reunited with Your Holiness before my letters arrive, concerning everything that has been deduced from their two Majesties, regarding the English negotiation.' The Cardinal further comments 'As for me, I needed to record this material. Nothing else has happened, except that I am waiting here for the opinion of His Holiness on my loyalty and obedience. Moreover, I am struggling hard to elect what I must do for the service of God, and to gain his benediction.' With integral address leaf. Some very slight, minor staining, otherwise a bold, attractively penned and clean letter, VG At the time of writing this letter Pole had been attainted in absentia following his disagreement with King Henry VIII, to whom he had not offered his support in his divorce from Catherine of Aragon, despite the King's offer of the Archbishopric of York or the Diocese of Winchester.

MARCONI GUGLIELMO: (1874-1937) Italian Inventor, developed a radio telegraph system. Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1909. Autograph Telegram Signed, Senatore Marconi, one page, 8vo, Port Commandant, Civitavecchia, written in Italian on light graph paper and neatly affixed to a partially printed form of the Italian Society of Maritime Radio, one page, oblong folio, 15th October 1934. Marconi writes, in full, 'I arrived aboard Elettra today around 6pm. Stop. I request to make ready for tie-up.' The printed form bears various annotations etc., relating to the delivery of Marconi's radio telegram. Some light age wear, otherwise VG Marconi purchased the yacht Elettra in 1916 and turned it into his personal laboratory. He spent the last few years of his life travelling and experimenting on the yacht. On 26th July 1934, just a few months before the present telegram, Marconi established a radio telegraphic connection between the Elettra and the radio beacon in Sestri Levante with a wavelength of 63cm, thereby demonstrating how a ship could, in fog and complete darkness, be safely guided into a harbour. This technology later led to the invention of radar.

D.S., Charles R, (a good, bold example), as King, at the head, two pages, folio, Whitehall, 4th June 1670. The manuscript warrant is addressed to the Attorney General, ordering him to prepare 'a Bill fit for our Royall Signature to pass Our great Seale', and states, in part, 'Whereas the Deane of the Cathedrall Church of St. Paulls London…did…lett unto Thomas Neale….the ground and soyle of a late Mill…with severall other…buildings…And whereas William Sancroft Doctor in Divinity Deane of the Cathedrall Church of St Paulls London and the said Thomas Neale, have by their humble Petition desired us to grant to the said Thomas Neale during the said Lease…liberty to hold a Markett in Shadwell in the County of Middlx on every Wednesday weekly for the ease and relief of the Inhabitants…And whereas by Inquisition taken at the house of Thomas Kinsey in Bloomesbury in the Parish of St. Giles in the Fields in the County of Middlx…it is found that it will not be any damage to…neighbouring marketts if wee should grant to the said Thomas Neale…that they…should have and hold one Market in a certaine place called Shadwell in or near the Parish of Stepney…on Wednesday in every week yearly….' OSBORNE THOMAS: (1632-1712) 1st Duke of Leeds. English Statesman, Lord High Treasurer 1673-79 and Lord President of the Council 1689-99. D.S., Danby, one page, folio, Wallingford House, 14th May 1677. The manuscript warrant is addressed to Sir Robert Howard and orders him to pay to Thomas Blagrave 'one of his Maties. Mussitians' the sum of forty pounds nine shillings and two pence, being his yearly fee. Neatly mounted and with some age wear and minor paper loss to the edges and with a lengthy tear (neatly repaired), just affecting part of the text but not the signature. About G Thomas Blagrave (c.1622-1688) English Musician and Singer, a member of King Charles II's private band of violins. Sir Robert Howard (1626-1698) English Playwright and Politician, Secretary to the Treasury 1671-73 and Auditor of the Exchequer 1673-98.

ANNE: (1665-1714) Queen of England, Scotland & Ireland 1702-07 and Queen of the Kingdom of Great Britain 1707-14. D.S., Anne R, as Queen, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Court at Windsor, 2nd August 1709. The manuscript document is a military commission appointing John Lloyd to be a Captain in the Regiment of Foot commanded by Archibald, Earl of Ilay. Countersigned at the foot by Henry Boyle (1669-1725) 1st Baron Carleton. Anglo-Irish Politician, Lord Treasurer of Ireland 1704-15 & Northern Secretary 1708-10. Lacking the seal although with the pale blue revenue stamp affixed in the left margin. Some light overall age wear and a few minor stains, G Archibald Campbell (1682-1761) 3rd Duke of Argyll, Earl of Ilay (from 1706). Scottish Nobleman, Politician & Soldier. One of the founders of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

A good, early D.S., George R, just two days after becoming King, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Court at Saville House, 27th October 1760. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing George Forbes ('commonly called Lord Forbes') to be a Major General 'of all and singular Our Forces, as well as Horse, as Foot, employed, or to be employed in Our Service'. Countersigned at the foot by William Pitt (1708-1778) The Elder. 1st Earl of Chatham. British Prime Minister 1766-68, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1756-57, 1757-61. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light dust staining to the upper edge, only very slightly affecting the King's signature, and a few very small, extremely minor tears at the edges. About VG George Forbes (1710-1769) 4th Earl of Granard. Irish Soldier and Politician who had entered the army in 1726.

GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of the United Kingdom 1760-1820. D.S., George R, as King, (a bold, 'mad' example), at the head, one page, folio, Court at Saint James's, 13th April 1808. The partially printed document is a Royal Licence issued to Messrs. Lubbock & Co and their merchants for a six month period, permitting two vessels to proceed from the Ports of Cadiz, Ayamonte or St Lucar to the Port of London 'with cargos of wine and such goods as are allowed by our order of the 11th November 1807 to be imported' without being hindered by a blockade providing the vessels 'shall not be found to have had on board….any Warlike or Naval Stores, or any Article or Articles intended to be or usually converted into Warlike or Naval Stores, or Salt or Provisions of any Kind whatever, except such as may be fairly deemed Sea Stores for the Use of the Crews….' Countersigned at the foot by Robert Jenkinson (1770-1828) 2nd Earl of Liverpool. British Prime Minister 1812-27, Home Secretary 1804-06, 1807-09. Signed ('Hawkesbury') as Baron Hawkesbury. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. With blank integral leaf. Some light dust staining to the edges and some folds and a few small tears to the edges, only very slightly affecting one letter of the King's signature. G

[VICTORIA]: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. A pair of large, attractive oblong folio documents, being a Letters Patent, partially printed on vellum and dated 14th May 1869. Issued to George Tomlinson Bousfield for 'an Invention for Improvements in Apparatus for lifting building blocks of stone concrete or other material and for disengaging such blocks from the lifting Apparatus...[which]...has been communicated from abroad by Darnton Hutton of Beverwyk in....Holland', the larger document headed Victoria by the Grace of God in large letters and both ornately engraved with the Royal Arms and emblematic and figural vignettes at the head, and with scrolled foliated borders to the sides. The two are neatly tied together and accompanied by a large and elaborate mustard wax seal (6 inches in diameter) bearing an impression of the young Queen on her throne flanked by two ladies on one side and on the other side an impression of the Queen riding her horse, contained in the original round tin box and attached to the base of the document with the original braided cotton cords. The seal broken into several segments, although complete, and the documents with some extremely minor, light age wear, G to VG

ALBERT PRINCE: (1819-1861) Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, husband of Queen Victoria. L.S., Albert, as Acting Great Master of the Order of the Bath, one page, folio, Buckingham Palace, 21st June 1844, to Major General Sir Robert Henry Sale. The Prince announces 'The Queen having been graciously pleased to issue a Royal Warrant dispensing with the ceremony of your Investiture and empowering you to wear and use the Star and Ribband and Badge of a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath in as full and ample a manner as if you had been formally invested by Her Majesty' and therefore adds that he has the duty to transmit to Sale the necessary decorations and Royal Warrant (neither present). With blank integral leaf. Some extremely minor, light age wear to the left edge, VG Major General Sir Robert Henry Sale (1782-1845) British Army Officer who commanded the garrison of Jalalabad during the First Afghan War 1841-42 and was killed in action during the First Anglo-Sikh War. Sale's investiture, referred to in the present letter, did not take place as he was serving in India.

A good, early D.S., Elizabeth R, as Queen, at the head, two pages, folio, Court of Saint James, 26th March 1952. The typed document appoints John William Taylor, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at Mexico City, to be 'Our undoubted Commissioner, Procurator and Plenipotentiary in respect of Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' and to enter into discussions relative to telecommunications between British Honduras and Mexico and granting Taylor 'all manner of Power and Authority to…conclude with such Minister or Ministers….as may be vested with similar Power and Authority on the part of Our Good Friend the President of the United States of Mexico, any Treaty, Convention, Agreement, Protocol or other Instrument that may tend to the attainment of…[telecommunications]…and to sign for Us, and in Our name…everything so agreed upon and concluded….as We Ourselves could do, if personally present…' With a red blind embossed seal affixed at the conclusion, the seal issued in the name of King George VI. Some extremely minor, light staining and creasing, otherwise VG The present document was signed in the second month of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

ELIZABETH II: (1926- ) Queen of the United Kingdom 1952- . D.S., Elizabeth R, as Queen, at the head, one page, oblong folio, Court of St. James, 15th December 1954. The partially printed document approves the appointment made by 'Our Good Sister the Queen of the Netherlands' for Mr. J. R. Leith to be Vice-Consul at Aberdeen for the counties of Aberdeen, Banff, Moray, Kincardine and Nairn. Countersigned at the foot by Anthony Eden (1897-1977) British Prime Minister 1955-57, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1935-38, 1940-45 and 1951-55. With blind embossed seal in the upper left corner. Framed to an overall size of 17 x 14. VG

Signed on the day of the first execution by guillotine LOUIS XVI: (1754-1793) King of France 1774-92, executed during the French Revolution. A good D.S., Louis, as King, one page (vellum), oblong folio, 25th April 1792, in French. The attractively penned manuscript document is a judicial appointment relating to Adrien Nicolas Morin of Martigues in the Bouches-du-Rhone department of southern France. Boldly signed by the King at the foot and countersigned by Antoine Duranthon (1736-1793) French Minister of Justice April - July 1792. Some very light, minor age wear and a small area of paper loss and neat tear to the lower right corner, not affecting the text or signatures. About VG The present document was signed on the day of the first execution by guillotine, performed on highwayman Nicolas Jacques Pelletier who was executed in front of what is today the city hall of Paris. The following year both signatories of the present document would also face their deaths by guillotine, King Louis XVI on 21st January 1793 and Antoine Duranthon on 20th December 1793.

GUSTAVUS II ADOLPHUS: (1594-1632) King of Sweden 1611-32, known as 'The Lion of the North', regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time and credited as the founder of Sweden as a Great Power. Rare D.S., Gustavus Adolphus, as King, one page, folio, Army Camp at Berson (near Kokenhusen, present day Latvia), 6th December 1625. The manuscript document is an Order to the General Quarter Master of the field army to secure sufficient provisions of food for the troops and ordering supplies for Gerdt Didrichsson, Master of the Stables, of hides, alum, salt, tallow, nails for shoeing horses etc., and money to also be made available. Signed by the King at the foot. With integral address leaf bearing a blind embossed paper seal. An attractive and clean document, VG The present document is signed shortly before the King's significant victory in the Battle of Wallhof on 7th January 1626, fought between Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The manuscript document is a conveyance of two estates, Bargetorp and Wexstjo to Asbjorn Marthenson for the sum of 60 Silver Thaler. Signed by the Queen at the conclusion immediately above a blind embossed paper seal. With blank integral leaf. Some very light age wear at the folds and a circular stain to the first page, evidently caused by the seal, only very slightly affecting the text (which remains perfectly legible). About VG

The typed document, in Spanish, is issued in the name of Manuel Urrutia Lleo, President of Cuba, and authorises a decision sanctioned by the cabinet of the revolutionary government ('after the commotion caused by the overthrow of tyranny') that traditional carnivals be held in the cities of Santa Clara and Sancti Spiritus, and in Holguin and Guantanamo, 'with the enthusiasm and worthy brilliance in this year of liberation', and further ordering a sum of $60,000 be made available from the Ministry of Finance and to be divided between the mayors of the named cities as an economic contribution to hold the carnivals. Signed by Castro at the conclusion and with two countersignatures including that of Rufo Lopez-Fresquet, Minister of Finance, across blind embossed seals. With a further blind embossed blue paper seal affixed with two blue ribbons beneath the signatures. KITCHENER HERBERT: (1850-1916) British Field Marshal. Two Ls.S., H H Kitchener, each one page, folio, Cairo (?), 1888 & 1889, to the Head of the Department of Seizure and Coordination, in Arabic. The official manuscript letters of introduction appear to refer to several Egyptian lieutenants under Kitchener's command, named as First Lieutenant Ali and Second Lieutenant Shaaban, and states that they have recently served in the Police warehouse. Kitchener writes to enable the lieutenants to approach a high ranking official, in charge of the department for the seizure of land and assets, most likely in the Sudan. Together with a third Arabic letter (not signed by Kitchener) on the stationery of the office of the Surveyor General at the War Office, Cairo.
