E Fawkener's castaway-fortune', slightly soiled and spotted, creased where folded, from the Phillipps collection, 1 page, folio Thomas Pownall (1722-1805), Governor of Massachusetts 1757-59 and friend of Benjamin Franklin, returned to Europe in 1760, marrying the widow of Sir Everard Fawkener, Harriet, in 1765. Here he writes to an unnamed recipient about Westhorp House, 'the last wreck of Sir. E Fawkener's castaway-fortune'. Pownall had decided it 'is to be sold next year' since living there weighed upon his wife's 'spirits with such an oppressing melancholy' that he declares 'I wish to god I could let it ready furnished even for this summer'. He seeks to either sell it direct or buy it to let: if the anonymous recipient knows a potential client, 'they shall have all my furniture & everything here - Liquor Hay Corn Coals Wood Cows &c ready for them to come into at a moments [sic] warning'. Pownall first arrived in America in 1753, and although he had a reputation as a womanizer and host of lavish parties during his term as Governor, he was later described by John Adams as 'the most constitutional and national Governor' ever to represent the crown in Massachusetts. Back in London he became an acknowledged expert on colonial affairs and published a work on the Administration of the Colonies (1764 and with numerous revised editions). In 1777, he recommended a liberal treaty recognizing American independence. His Letter to Adam Smith (1776) was one of the earliest critical responses to the Wealth of Nations and took Smith to task for underestimating the economic and military power of the Atlantic colonies.
