Postal History. The working archive scrapbook of Herbert Joyce, author of 'The History of the Post Office', London, 1893, compiled c. 1890 and including early 18th-late 19th century ephemera and manuscripts, including [1683] Charles II double-sided 'broadside' "An Answer to a Case, Lately printed and delivered to several Members of this Honourable House, by Mr. William Dockwra Merchant, Concerning the Penny-Post [...]", slight and stable centre tear, enclosed within a 19th century foolscap manuscript transcript of the case, three copies of the London Gazette, nos. 1835, June 1683, 1916, March 1684, & 3247, December 1696, a 1796 copy of The London Chronicle, four MS ALS addressed to Thomas de Grey, 2nd Baron Walsingham (1748-1818) as Joint Postmaster General (1787-94), two from John Palmer (1742-1818), the others addressed from Daniel "Honest" Braithwaite and another official at the General Post Office, ALS correspondence to and from George Shaw Lefevre, 1st Baron Eversley (1831-1928) as Postmaster General (1884-85), further letters, early 19th century etching of the Royal Exeter Mail, tipped-in clippings from 18th and 19th century periodicals viz. post and mail coaches, etc., disbound folio, loose in places.
German Tourists in 1920s South American. An album of approx. 210 original b/w and sepia photographs, mixed sizes, annotated, dated 1923, showing their outward voyage on SS Gotha, of the Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen line, to South America, via Lisbon and Madeira, and a line-crossing ceremony at the Equator; mostly Brazil and Argentina, including Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, including the latter’s then newly built Palacio Barolo, scenes of the countries’ interior as they explore and camp, some shots of some indigenous locals, etc., original cloth-covered limp boards, oblong crown folio (28.5cm x 38cm).
Post-War Japan and the Far East. An unusual collection of approx. 314 snapshots and photographs, taken by and concerning the military service of Lance Corporal E. Buxton (S/22586490) RASC, 1952-53, including the British Commonwealth Military Correction Establishment, portraits of army personnel, groups, billets, the funeral of Staff Sergeant Johnson, an Anzac parade, Christmas 1952, views of local topography, scenes of daily domestic life, further scenes including Miyajima [i.e. Itsukushima], Valetta, Port Said, Colombo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mombasa, the last leaf with a hand-scrivened map of Japan, annotated in gilt throughout (somewhat faded), some leaves vacant, contemporary cloth album, oblong folio (30.5cm x 37cm).
Views of Japan, n.d. [c. 1870/80], a large format album of 49 albumen prints, most of the figural studies being hand-tinted, illustrating early Meiji period Japan, with traditional figures and dress, street scenes of real domestic life, architecture and landscapes, occasional spots of foxing and grime, only very infrequently affecting the photographs, mounted on thick card leaves, some of which are chipped and soiled in places, contemporary green quarter-morocco over boards, now split and disbound, royal folio (49 x 36.5cm).
