In Anlehnung an die Übersetzung Luthers in eine süddeutsch-schweizerische Sprachform gebrachte Bibel oder landläufig „Zürcher Bibel“ genannte Ausgabe. Der Buchschmuck entspricht fast vollständig der zweiten Folio-Ausgabe. Die Textholzschnitte meist nach Zeichnungen von H. Holbein d. J. stammen vom Formschneider „VS“, den Leeman-van Elck als Veit Specklin identifiziert. - Der verzögerte Druck des ersten Teils resultierte aus einer Textrevision, die nötig geworden war. In der Vorrede geht Froschauer darauf ein. Außerdem ist eine umfangreiche Vorrede vorgebunden, in der die biblische Weisheit gegen alle Anfechtungen verteidigt wird. Dieser Text wird nach neuesten Forschungen H. Bullinger zugeschrieben. - Es sei noch auf einige schweizerische Besonderheiten hingewiesen: Die Abbildung auf Blatt CCCXII (verso) im dritten Teil zeigt im Hintergrund die Stadtsilhouette von Luzern; die Initiale auf Blatt LXXXV (recto) im zweiten Teil Wilhelm Tell und den Apfelschuss. Diese Ausgabe hat sich also nicht nur textlich von ihrem Vorbild der Luther-Übersetzung entfernt. - Obwohl die Auflagen der drei Folio-Ausgaben wohl ziemlich hoch waren - es wurden jeweils vermutlich um die 3000 Exemplare gedruckt - sind alle drei Auflagen selten; besonders komplette und gut erhaltene Exemplare tauchen kaum noch auf.

Minimale Bezugsfehlstelle am oberen Kapital. Seite 46 mit großem Braunfleck. Wenige Seiten mit kleinen Papierläsuren. Gering gebräunt. Kaum fleckig. Es fehlt der Schmutztitel.)VD18 11096268. Schmidt 26 (S. 304 ff.). Wüthrich III, S. 18. - Die zweite Folio-Ausgabe der zuerst 1630 erschienenen Merian-Bibel. - „Die Merianbibel bedarf kaum weiterer Erläuterungen. Sie ist in Süddeutschland, Basel und dem Elsaß wohl die verbreitetste deutsche illustrierte Bibel gewesen, vorab in vermöglicheren Familien ... Sie leitet sehr früh das Zeitalter des Kupferstichs in der Bibelillustration ein, die immer weiter weg vom reformatorischen Zweck der Bibelbilder zum rein Darstellerisch-Künstlerischen führte ... Die Leistung Matthäus Merians als Vermittler der Kenntnis und Anschauung der biblischen Geschichten ist sehr groß und wurde durch keinen der späteren Illustratoren übertroffen, kaum erreicht“ (Schmidt). - Ohne das einigen Exemplaren beigegebene Widmungsblatt.

BERNADOTTE JEAN BAPTISTE: (1763-1844) Marshal of France, Prince de Pontecorvo and King Charles XIV John of Sweden and Norway 1818-44. A very fine L.S., `J. Bernadotte´, a bold ink signature with flourish, two pages, folio, Paris, 11th September 1799, to the General Administrators of Subsistence, Stages and military Convoys, Rochefort Company, in French. The partially printed document bears a republican coat of arms to the heading, and the motto "Liberté - Egalité". Bernadotte, in his capacity as Minister of war, sends a request and warning to his correspondents, stating in parL´administration centrale du département de Rhin et Moselle, Citoyen, me mande qu´elle recueilli un grand nombre de pièces justificatives des fournitures faites par les administrations municipales de son arrondissement, à défaut de préposé aux étapes et convois militaires, mais elle se plaint du refus que font vos Inspecteurs... J´ignore, Citoyen, les motifs de ce refus, vous savez que vous avez été chargé d´assurer les Services des Etapes et Convois militaires dans les 4 nouveaux départements, dont celui de Rhin et Moselle fait partie´ (Translation: "The central administration of the department of Rhin & Moselle, Citizen, tells me that they have collected a large number of supporting documents for the supplies made by the municipal administrations of their district, in the absence of a responsible for the military stages and convoys, but they complain of the refusal made by your Inspectors... I do not know, Citizen, the reasons for such refusal, you know that you have been responsible for ensuring the Services of Military Stages and Convoys in the 4 new departments, including that of Rhin & Moselle which is part of") Further, Bernadotte wonders why such a decision has been taken contradicting orders, saying `Je ne puis donc concevoir en vertu de quel ordre vos Inspecteurs ont pu refuser de recueillir les pièces qui se trouvent entre les mains de cette administrationdépartementale....´ (Translation: "I therefore cannot understand under what order your Inspectors could have refused to collect the documents which are in the hands of this departmental administration...") With address leaf bearing an ink stamp of the Ministry. Small area of paper loss to the address leaf due to the opening of the letter. G to VG Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was appointed Minister of war on 2nd July 1799, leading the ministry only for a short period of two and a half months until the 14th September 1799. On the morning of 13th September 1799 he found his resignation announced in Le Moniteur Universel journal before he was aware that he had tendered it.The present letter was written and signed in his capacity of Minister of war, only three days before his resignation-dismissal.

Attractive signed printed large folio copy of L´Illustration Journal Universel, French weekly edition, sixteen pages, 21st February 1885, signed by Alexander II, as Emperor, with his initial `A´ in red indelible pencil to the upper right corner of the front page. The Parisian journal includes multiple and very attractive large engravings, showing to the front page a portrait of Jules Valles a French Author, Journalist and political Activis who passed away a week earlier. The journal also includes articles and engravings relating to Gordon Pasha travels to Chinal, Soudan, etc... and to the Panama Canal works. The present copy was originally bound in a red leather folio volume for the Emperor, alongside other additions of the journal. Left edge very slightly trimmed, otherwise VG

GUS (1911-1997) Gustave Erlich. French cartoonist, illustrator and caricaturist. Small selection of four original pen, ink and blue pencil cartoons drawn and signed ('Gus') by Gus, each one page, oblong folio, n.p., n.d. (1960s). Each of the single panel cartoons are dedicated to the theme of espionage and depict various military officers in the company of beautiful seductresses, all with captions to the base including 'J'adore les armes secretes' (Translation: 'I just love secret weapons'), 'J'ai chez moi des dossiers secrets pleins d'estampes japonaises' (Translation: 'I have secret files at home full of Japanese prints'), 'Vous connaissez tout de secrets militaires! Alors, un de plus ou de moins' (Translation: 'You know all about military secrets! So, one more or less') etc. Each with various pencil and ink annotations and stamps etc., to the rectos and versos, relating to their publication, some in the French weekly magazine Ici Paris. [BATTLE OF BRITAIN]: CROWLEY-MILLING DENIS (1919-1996) British Air Marshal, a fighter pilot of the RAF during World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. A significant D.S., D. Crowley-Milling P/O, two pages, folio, n.p., 30th August 1940. The partially printed document, completed entirely in Crowley-Milling's hand, is a Combat Report (RAF Form 1151, marked Secret) providing details of the pilot’s first aerial victory during the Battle of Britain, the narrative stating, in part, 'While patrolling in vic over North Weald enemy sighted......stepped up from 12,000 to 18,000 ft. attacked middle section of 110's, two broke off which were attacked by Red leader & Red 2, leaving HE 111 K open to self which I attacked astern giving 5 secs burst. E.A. made no evasive tactics.....starboard engine of E.A. started to smoke then started to dive to ground.....P/O Hart confirms seeing my HE 111 K going down in flames'. BYRD RICHARD E.: (1888-1957) American naval officer, polar explorer and pioneer aviator who claimed to have led the first expeditions to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. A fine original pen and ink drawing of Byrd by the German-Swiss artist Robert Kastor, executed on a folio (10 x 12) sheet of art paper, the image depicting the aviator in a head and shoulders pose wearing his flying cap and goggles. Signed and inscribed by Byrd in dark fountain pen ink immediately beneath his portrait, 'To Robert Kastor, with best wishes, R E Byrd', and dated 25th February 1928 in his hand. Also signed by the artist. A few small, minor tears and very light age wear to the edges, otherwise VG

The attractive printed purple, blue and gold coloured document, is a diploma of participation in the final of the Sacrosong music festival. Signed by the future Pope in his capacity as President and Chairman of the festival. VG

FRANCO FRANCISCO: (1892-1975) Spanish General who served as head (Caudillo) of the Spanish state 1936-75 and as Prime Minister of Spain 1938-73. D.S., F Franco, one page, folio, El Pardo, Madrid, 25th June 1964, in Spanish. The attractive red and black printed document, with a blind embossed coat of arms at the head, acknowledges the appointment of Ramon Munoz Gonzalez y Bernaldo de Quiros as a national councillor by virtue of election by the local representation, and presents him with the title of councillor as a member of the X National Council. Signed by Franco at the foot alongside a circular blind embossed seal. With blank integral leaf. Mounted to decorative red silk and framed and glazed in the original frame to an overall size of 18.5 x 22. A.L.S., Ibrahim Khalil Ibrahim, by an Egyptian describing himself as a 'public writer and translator', one page, folio, Alexandria, 6th September 1929, to [Howard] Carter. Ibrahim writes, in full, 'I beg to inform you I am in possession of a valuable collection of the official real photographs taken on the Palestine, Egyptian and Syrian fronts collected by me whilst serving the British military service at clerical positions during the war time. Owing to my poverty which I suffer now for being ill treated by the Egyptians as revenge for my service with the British Kingdom as stated I would like to forward this war records to you for sale as you are of those who know the value of such thing'. HANRIOT FRANÇOIS: (1759-1794) General during the French Revolution. A leading figure in the insurrection and in the September massacres. Hanriot was a Sans-culotte leade, street Orator, and Commander of the National Guard. Hanriot was taken to the guillotine in the same cart as Robespierre and was executed shortly after at the early age of 34. L.S., `Hanriot´, one page, folio, Paris, 9th June 1794, to General Pille, in French. The cleanly written letter bears the heading of the General Head-Quarters of the Army Forces of Paris. Hanriot, in his capacity as General in chief of the Parisian 17th military dvision refers to Gendarme Forquignon who has lost his horse, stating in part `Il me parait, d’après les renseignements que j’ai pris sur ce citoyen, qu’il est très malheureux ; il est père de trois enfants et a déjà perdu deux chevaux. Ses moyens ne sauraient lui permettre de se remonter. Je recommande donc à ta Justice et à ton humanité le Gendarme Forquignon à l´effet de lui procurer un autre cheval...´ (Translation: "It appears to me, from the information I have gathered about this citizen, that he is very unhappy; he is the father of three children and has already lost two horses. His means cannot allow him to recover. I therefore recommend to your Justice and your humanity, the Gendarme Forquignon, to provide him with another horse...") Addressed to the verso to General Pille, Commissair of the organizatioin of the infantry armies. Small area of paper loss to the bottom lef corner, otherwise G ​The present letter was signed by Hanriot only a month before being guillotined. In July 1794 Hanriot tried to release Robespierre who had been arrested by the Convention. But he was arrested too and executed the day after, together with Robespierre, Saint-Just and Couthon.

WLADYSLAW IV VASA: (1595-1648) King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania 1632-48 and the disputed Tsar of Russia 1610-13. A rare L.S., `Vladislaus Rex´, one page, folio, 21st May 1633, to the Archbishop of Larissa, Nuntio Apostolic to the Reign, in Latin. The letter states to the heading `..Vladislaus fourth by the grace of God, King of Poland, Great Duke of Lithuania, Russia, Prussia, Masonia,… and Grand Duke of Moskovia´ The King sends his compliments and good wishes. Unstranslated. With address leaf bearing a large and very attractice Royal paper seal affixed. Letter professionally restored. G

DROUET JEAN-BAPTISTE: (1763-1824) French Politician of the Revolution, best-known for being the person who in June 1791 identified, denounced and stopped the escape attempt of the King of France Louis XVI and his family during the “Flight to Varennes”. Drouet was postmaster at Saint-Menehould, but after this episode he became increasingly popular and would be appointed Deputy in the National Convention 1792-95. Drouet voted in 1793 for the death of Louis XVI without appeal and proposed the expulsion of all British speculators residing in France. An excellent and extremmely good content L.S., `Drouet - maitre de poste de Menehould´, three pages, folio, Paris, 11th July 1791, in French. Drouet sends the present letter, apparently sent to a member of the National Assembly, explaining what would be his wish and what he expects to receive as award for his behaviour when he managed to abort the King´s escape plan, saying `Animé du plus pur patriotism, et du désir d´être util à l´état, j´avais formé le projet de servir dans les troupes de ligne, réfléchissant ensuite que ma fortune ne pourrait(sic) suffire aux dépenses nécessaires… j´ai préféré de vous prier de m´employer soit dans la Gendarmerie Nationale, soit dans la Garde Nationale…´ (Translation: “Driven by the purest patriotism, and the desire to be useful to the state, I had formed the plan to serve in the line troops, then reflecting that my fortune cannot be sufficient for the necessary expenses... I preferred to ask you to employ me either in the National Gendarmerie or in the National Guard…”) Drouet further refers to the reward that he was promised after his heroic behaviour in favour of the Revolution, and states `Quant à la récompense dont vous m´avez flatté, Monsieur, que l´assemblée Nationale voudrait bien s´occuper en ma faveur, je me soumets entièrement à sa decision, et je l´attendrai avec respect´ (Translation: “As for the reward with which you have flattered me, Sir, which the National Assembly would like to take care of in my favour, I submit myself entirely to its decision, and I will await it with respect”) To a post-scriptum, Drouet also kindly asks for an upgrading appointment of a member of his family, Augustin Drouet, who helped and had an important role in the Flight to Varennes events. MAURICE. PRINCE OF ORANGE: (1567-1625) also known as Maurice of Nassau. Maurice was “Stadtholder” of the Dutch Republic 1585-1625. L.S. `Votre bien affectionné ami a vous faire service´, one page, folio, Arnhem, 30th December 1602, to Sieur de Roybourg, in old French. Maurice acknowledges receipt of his correspondent´s letter and states in part `Monsieur le capitaine Baptiste porteur de cette [sic] m’a donné vos lettres avec l’instruction et modèle que vous lui aviez donnés charge de me présenter ici à Arnhem. J’ai assez connu tant par vos dites lettres comme aussi par le rapport dudit capitaine la bonne volonté laquelle vous continuez de porter tant à cet Etat comme à moi dont je vous en remercie bien affectueusement, et d’autant que le sujet duquel vous m’avez écrit est d’importance, j’ai trouvé nécessaire de le communiquer avec les Etats Généraux aussitôt que je serai de retour à La Haye. Et vous ferai savoir leur résolution…´ (Translation: “Captain Baptiste, bearer of this letter, gave me your letters with the instructions that you had given him in charge of presenting to me here in Arnhem. I have known enough, both through your said letters and also through the report of the said Captain the good will which you continue to bring supporting both this State and my person, for which I thank you very affectionately, and especially as the subject of which you have written is of importance, I found it necessary to communicate it with the General States as soon as I return to The Hague. GENET JEAN: (1910-1986) French Novelist, Playwright, and political Activist. An unusual manuscript sentence in the hand of Genet, being the beginning of a letter he intended to address, but which was never finished nor sent, one page, lined paper, folio, n.p., 5th October, n.y., to Edmonde, in French. Genet stats in full `Le 5 Octobre – Chère Edmonde, Dîner en tête à tête avec vous mais ce sera une joie´ (Translation: “October 5th – Dear Edmonde, dinner for two, face to face you and me, but it will be a joy”). Together with an A.L.S., `Laurent Boyer´, two pages, folio, Paris, 18th January 1997, on the Editions Gallimard printed stationery, to Edmonde Charles-Roux, in French. Boyer states in part `Chère Madame, A la retraite depuis deux mois, mais ayant fort à faire pour classer et archiver les dossiers accumulés au cours de 38 ans de travail chez Gallimard, j´ai mis en ordre les papiers que Jean Genet venait deposer dans mon bureau quand il venait à Paris. Ces quelques mots de sa main sur une page de son bloc, étaient peut-être le debut d´une lettre qui vous était destinée? Peut-être vous évoquent-ils un souvenir? A tout hasard je vous transmets ce message d´outre-tombe, puisque Genet m´avait désigné comme son exécuteur testamentaire chargé de la gestion de son oeuvre…´ (Translation: “Dear Madam, Retired as I am since two months ago, but having a lot to do classifying and archiving the files accumulated during 38 years of work at Gallimard, I put in order the papers that Jean Genet came to leave in my office when he was coming to Paris. These few words in his handwriting on a page in his pad, were perhaps the beginning of a letter intended for you? Maybe they evoke a memory for you? By any chance I am sending you this message from beyond the grave, since Genet had designated me as his executor responsible for the management of his work…”) Also including a copy of the typed letter, unsigned, sent by Edmonde Charles-Roux to Laurent Boyer, responding to his letter, and stating in part `Cher Laurent Boyer, Le début d´une lettre jamais achevée et qu´avait l´intention de m´adresser Jean Genet m´a infiniment touché et je vous remercie très sincèrement de me l´avoir envoyée´ (Translation: “Dear Laurent Boyer, the beginning of a letter never finished and which Jean Genet intended to send to me has deeply touched me and I thank you very sincerely for having sent it to me”) Accompanied by an 8 x 8 photograph of Genet, unsigned, showing the French artist seated in a head and shoulders pose in his late years. FLAUBERT GUSTAVE: (1821-1880) French novelist. A significant autograph manuscript, unsigned, three pages, folio, n.p., n.d. (c.1857), in French. Flaubert's extensive manuscript notes are entitled Un repas de noces - Lettre d'Hyppolochus a Lincée ('A wedding meal - Letter from Hyppolochus to Lincée') and were prepared by the novelist as research notes for chapter one ('The Feast') of his historical novel Salammbo. The text states, in part, (translated) 'Caranus making a nuptial feast in Macedonia invited twenty parasites there. As soon as they were seated at table each of them was given a bottle of silver. They had each received before entering the room a gold band estimated at five gold Ecus….. For us happy for the rest of our days, with what we took from the feast of Caranus, we seek goods, country houses, slaves to buy, with the presents with which he has showered us'. Rare in this form. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Hippolochus was a Macedonian writer and student of Theophrastus, who addressed in a letter to his fellow student Lynceus of Samos a description of a wedding feast in Macedon in the early 3rd century BC. The bridegroom was a certain Caranus, most likely a relative of the Caranus who had been a companion of Alexander the Great. Flaubert's Salammbo is a historical novel which was published in 1862. Enormously popular in its day, the novel opens with a feast to celebrate the victory of the battle of Eryx, won against Rome, and was praised for its style and story. Provenance: It is believed that the present manuscript was originally included with a series of other research notes made by Flaubert, totaling some 26 pages, and entitled Letters of Alciphron. As well as including extracts relating to a wedding feast, the manuscript also featured observations relating to courtesans and the manners of the people of Greece (see Les Amis de Flaubert, bulletin 12, 1958).

LIVERPOOL EARL OF: (1770-1828) British Prime Minister 1812-27. A good, large D.S., Liverpool, one page (vellum), large oblong folio, n.p., 13th September 1809. The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, is a Deputy Lieutenant's Commission addressed to Francis William Cobb and states, in part, 'His Majesty's Lieutenants are thereby authorized and impowered to appoint Deputy Lieutenants for their respective counties, and the Warden of the Cinque Ports, Two Ancient Towns and their Members.......And whereas by one other Act of Parliament made in the 48th Year of the Reign of his said present Majesty, intituled "An Act for enabling His Majesty to establish a permanent Local Militia Force, under certain Restrictions, for the Defence of the Realm". amongst other Things the Mayors, Jurats or other Magistrates. for the Time being........shall and may Act as Deputy Lieutenants for the Purposes of this Act, and the said Warden was thereby authorized to appoint any other Persons qualified in the Manner directed by the said first recited Act, to act in like Manner as Deputy Lieutenants......In pursuance therefore of the said recited Acts, I the said Robert Earl of Liverpool, with His Majesty's Approbation, have nominated, constituted, and deputed, and by these Presents, DO nominate, constitute and depute you the said Francis William Cobb to be one of my Deputy Lieutenants.....you having delivered into the Clerk of the Peace. of the Town and Port of Dovor a specific Description, in writing, signed by yourself. of a sufficient Qualification for holding this Commission......to act, do, execute and perform, all and every Act and Acts, Powers, Matters and Things, in the said Acts of Parliament contained, which on the Parts and Behalfs of Deputy Lieutenants.....may or ought to be done, acted, executed, and performed, and that in all Things according to the true Intent and Meaning of the same'. Signed by the Earl of Liverpool at the foot alongside a good red wax seal. With a further affixed small blind embossed paper seal and blue revenue stamp. A few minor folds and light age wear, otherwise VGFrancis William Cobb (1781-1871) English brewer, banker, shipping agent, coal merchant; the third member of his family to serve as Deputy Lieutenant of Dover.

KUTUZOV MIKHAIL: (1745-1813) Prince Mikhail Golenishchev-Kutuzov-Smolensky. Field Marshal of the Russian Empire. He served as a military officer and a diplomat under the reign of three Romanov Monarchs. Kutuzov was shot in the head twice while fighting the Turks and survived the serious injuries. He defeated Napoleon as commander-in-chief in the patriotic defence of Russia in 1812. Tsar Alexander I, wrote that he would be remembered amongst Europe's most famous commanders and that Russia would never forget his worthiness. A good L.S., `Prince Koutouzoff Smolensky´, one page, folio, Lyck, Poland, 8th January 1813, to Prince Dolgorukov, in French. The present letter is signed by Kutuzov only three months before passing away. Kutuzov states `Mon Prince, j´ai l´honneur de vous transmettre ci-joint une copie de la lettre que j´adresse au Général York, en réponse à la note qu´il vous a remise. Votre Excellence y verra les mesures qui ont été adoptées à la suite de ses réclamations. Ce nouvel état de choses met une fin à votre mission et je vous engage mon Prince, à rejoindre votre corps´ (Translation: "My Prince, I have the honor to send to you herewith a copy of the letter which I address to General York, in response to the note which he gave you. Your Excellency will see there the measures which were adopted following his complaints. This new state of affairs puts an end to your mission and I urge you, my Prince, to join your military corps") With blank integral leaf. ​Kutuzov refers to Prussian General Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg (1759-1830) who commanded during the Russian campaign troops as allied of France but who would later abandon Macdonald´s French regiments and agreed neutrality with the Russian.

GERONIMO: (1829-1909) Bedonkohe Apache leader and medicine man, noted for his raids and related combat actions during the Apache Wars (1849-86). An excellent, bold pencil signature (‘GERONIMO’) to the verso of the personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card of Burns Durbin Caldwell and featuring his printed name to the centre of the recto. Accompanied by the original folio page to which the visiting card was originally loosely affixed. The page, removed from a contemporary album, features a vintage illustrated newspaper clipping laid down to the centre, the text stating, in part, ‘From Warpath to Poker Table – Old Geronimo, the famous fighting chief of the Apaches, is now a prisoner of the government at Port Sill…..it is said that the wily old chief has developed such skill at bluffing and “playing a hand” that he is rapidly getting rich…..Recently Geronimo deposited $1425 in a bank at El Reno as the result of a single week’s play’. Autographs of Geronimo are extremely rare and highly desirable. Some light age wear and two small traces of former mounting to the upper corners, not affecting the signature. About VG Burns D. Caldwell (1858-1922) American businessman, president of the Wells Fargo Express Company and chairman of the board of the American Railway Express Company. Geronimo attained celebrity status during his lifetime and he became a regular attraction at events and fairs including the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, New York in 1901, the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904 and Pawnee Bill’s Wild West Shows, where he appeared under Army guard. Geronimo dressed in traditional clothing on such occasions, posed for photographs, provided autographs and souvenirs, and sold his crafts. The present signature links two of the major household names of America’s Wild West – Geronimo and Wells Fargo, the latter being the company that handled express service to western states, and were often robbed. Provenance: From the autograph collection of Frank Dyche (d.1944) and his wife Grace Scripps Dyche (1863-1924). Frank Dyche, a prominent Chicago attorney, married Grace Scripps in 1896. Grace was the daughter of John Locke Scripps (1818-1866), editor of the Chicago Tribune, and his wife Mary E. Scripps (1825-1866). The Scripps have been described as ‘one of the oldest and most influential families of American journalism’ who ‘occupied a unique place in nineteenth-century America’.

MARIE LOUISE DUCHESS OF PARMA: (1791-1847) Austrian Archduchess, the second wife of Napoleon I. Empress of the French 1810-14. A very fine multiple signed L.S., `Marie Louise´, two pages, folio, Palace of St. Cloud, 29th May 1813, to the Emperor Napoleon I, in French. Also signed at the base, above and alongside the Empress, by the Duc de Feltre (1765-1818) in his capacity as Minister of war, and by Jean-Jacques-Régis de Cambaceres (1753-1824) in his capacity as Archchancellor of the Empire On the partially printed document of the Ministry of war, with the printed heading "Rapport A Sa Majesté l´Empereur et Roi" (Translation : "Report to His Majesty the Emperor & King"). Marie Louise, as Empress, sends a request to Napoleon referring to a musician of the infantry regiment stating in part `Le nommé Chetiveau, musicien au 22 Régiment d´Infanterie m´a adressé une demande à l´effet d´obtenir l´autorisation de quitter le service. Ce jeune homme expose, et des certificats authentiques contatent que son père avait 5 enfants; que l´aîné sést enrolé volontairement et qu´ensuite il a été employé comme officier de santé dans les colonies, où il a été assassiné par les nègres. Le 2º, aspirant de Marine, a péri en chassant une péniche anglaise après laquelle il a vait été envoyé.... Chetiveau ajoute qu´il est conscrit de 1806, qu´il a fait 3 campagnes en Espagne et au Portugal, qu´au moment où il était appelé à faire partie de l´armée, il allait obtenir un emploi dans les Doaunes qui l´aurait mis à portée d´être utile à son père qui est vieux et infirme et qu íl soutenait avant son départ...´ (Translation: "The man named Chetiveau, musician in the 22nd Infantry Regiment, sent me a request to obtain authorization to leave the service. This young man explains, and presents authentic certificates stating that his father had 5 children; that the eldest enlisted voluntarily and that he was then employed as a health officer in the colonies, where he was assassinated by the Negroes. The 2nd, a midshipman, perished while chasing an English barge after which he was sent.... Chetiveau adds that he was conscripted in 1806, that he served in 3 campaigns in Spain and Portugal, that at the time when he was called to be part of the army, he was going to obtain a job in the Doaunes which would have put him within reach of being useful to his father who is old and infirm and whom he supported before his departure..") paper bearing two large waterwarks, one to each page, the first bearing the Emperor´s profile portrait with the text "Napoleon, Emperuer et Roi", and the second bearing an eagle with the text "Empire Français 1811", and to the With blank integral leaf. ALEXANDER III: (1845-1894) Emperor of Russia 1881-94. Attractive signed printed large folio copy of L´Illustration Journal Universel, French weekly edition, forty-eight pages, special edition, 25th April 1885, signed by Alexander II, as Emperor, with his initial `A´ in red indelible pencil to the upper right corner of the front page. The Parisian journal includes multiple and very attractive large engravings, showing to the front page a country girl, to the inside multiple attractive and curious engravings, ober seventy, with multiple journal articles. The present copy was originally bound in a red leather folio volume for the Emperor, alongside other additions of the journal. Left edge very slightly trimmed, otherwise VG

SIGISMUND BATHORY: (1573-1613) Also known as SIGISMOND PRINCE OF TRANSYLVANIA. As a child he succeeded his father as Voivode or ruler of Transylvania. Sigismond abdicated in favour of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, and although he returned to his pillaged territories in 1601 with a Polish army, he could not strengthen his position and settled in Poland. In 1605, Holy Roman Emperor and Spanish King Philip III tried to persuade him to return and claim Transylvania, but he refused. He would later be accused of conspiracy and imprisoned by Rudolf II. Rare L.S., `Affettionatissimo Servitore - Sigismondo´, a bold large and attractive signature with flourish, one page, folio, Kisvarda, city in the north of Hungary, 28th April 1598, to Italian Bishop Alphonso Visconti, in Italian. Sigismund annouces his return `...tutti arrivati sani e salvi..´ (Translation: "...All arrived, healthy and safely...´, and expresses his satisfaction to his correspondent referring to the good words expressed by Pope Clement VII about him, stating in part `...con li commandi benignissimi di sua Santitá spettavo, resta solo che mi raccomandi, per mezzo di V.[ostra] S.[ignoria] Ill.[ustrissi]ma alla Santitá di n[ost]ro signor. Pregando la V. S. Ill.ma et R[everendissi]ma con maggior affetto di cuore che posso...´ (Translation: "...with the most benign commands of His Holiness, it remains only for you to recommend me, through Your S.[ignoria] Ill.[ustrissi] to the Holiness of our Lord. Praying for Your S.[ignoria] Ill.[ustrissi] et R[everendissi]ma but with my heartfelt affection...") With address leaf to Monsignor Alphonso Visconti, bearing also a small red wax seal in good condition. The lower part, small part, of the address leaf is cleanly clipped to the fold. MAHLER GUSTAV: (1860-1911) Austro-Bohemian Composer and Conductor. A leading conductor of his time and an influential composer for later generations. A good L.S., `Mahler´, a bold black ink signature, one page, folio, Vienna, 24th January 1904, in German. The letter is also signed by Josef Bayer, Director of the Austrian Court Ballet for 30 years, and by Josef Hassreiter, Libretist and Choreographer. Small selection of four original pen, ink and blue pencil cartoons drawn and signed ('Gus') by Gus, each one page, oblong folio, n.p., February - April 1961. Each of the single panel cartoons feature John F. Kennedy, one showing the young statesman sat on the knee of French President Charles de Gaulle with the caption 'Mon cher John, vous etes maintenant un grand garcon' (Translation: 'My dear John, you're a big boy now'), another depicting him stood in a boxing ring opposite Uncle Sam, wearing boxing gloves, with the caption 'Le Nouveau Manager - Mon petit gars, si serait de toi un champion' (Translation: 'The New Manager - My boy, if I could make you a champion'), and another of Kennedy at his desk welcoming astronaut Alan Shepard home, with the caption 'Kennedy recoit le premier homme de l'espace Americain' (Translation: 'Kennedy receives America's first spaceman'). Each with various pencil and ink annotations and stamps etc., to the rectos and versos, relating to their publication in the French daily newspaper Paris Jour.
