Canals.- Telford (Thomas) Ship Canal, for the Junction of the English and Bristol Channels, first edition, engraved folding map with proposed route of canal and 2 folding plans, some creasing, contemporary dark green straight-grain morocco, gilt, rubbed, folio, Printed for S. Brooke, 1824. ⁂ An ambitious plan to link the Bristol and English channels thereby dispensing of longer journeys around the coast. A bill was passed allowing the building of what was to be called the 'English and Bristol Channels Ship Canal', which would run from Stolford on the Bristol side to Beer, near Seaton on the other. It was to be 44 miles long with 60 locks and be able to carry ships up to 200 tonnes. Sadly, the company were unable to raise funds for the project.

Law.- Tiraqueau (André) Commentarii de nobilitate et jure primigeniorum, tertia hac, eademque postrema editione, ab autore ipso diligentissime recogniti, et tertia amplius parte locupletati, title within ornate architectural border with oval portrait of author verso, woodcut initials, title trimmed at fore-edge, just within printed area, some browning, staining and worming to upper margins, modern vellum, [not in Adams], folio, Lyon, Guillaume Rouillé, 1566.⁂ Andre Tiraqueau's legal works are of great importance in the development of the French judicial system. He was an active member of the Cenacle de Fontenay-le-Comte, a salon of fellow lawyers, writers, doctors, philosophers and historians, which included François Rabelais and Guillaume Budé amongst its members. Rabelais' Tiers Livre was greatly influenced by Tiraqueau's De Legibus.

It was the thought the right lay with the Crown and Elgin asks for it to be conferred on him, stressing that there was no pecuniary advantage to himself, folds, browned; and another manuscript, sm. 4to & folio (2).⁂ First mentioned probably John Thomas Townshend (1764-1831), MP.

Lot 2794

1250-1275 AD. A finely illuminated folio from an early medieval portable bible, hand-written by monks in Paris at the time of the later crusades; executed on both sides with two columns of 43 lines in early Gothic font, with spring plant initials in red and blue and decorative vines and spring work with highlights in red. 1.53 grams, 16.4 x 12.8cm (6 1/2 x 5"). From the property of a London gentleman; formerly in a UK collection, acquired in the 1990s. This leaf comes probably from a Bible of the so-called DU PRAT Atelier (as defined by Branner, Manuscript painting in Paris, 1977"). The text and decoration show that this was one of the numerous Bibles produced in Paris from about 1230 to a newly standardised format, made easy to use by the introduction of chapter numbers and running headings. Fine condition.

Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronte, KB (1758-1805). Norfolk born British naval commander and national hero, famous for his naval victories against the French during the Napoleonic wars, victor at the Battle of Trafalgar, where he was mortally wounded aboard his flagship Victory. A signed memorandum/letter to Ross Donnelly, Captain of the Narcissus, from "Victory off Toulon", dated 14th September 1803 and signed "Nelson & Bronte". The letter is in the hand of, and additionally signed by Alexander John Scott (1768-1840), Nelson's faithful official secretary who was with him as he died onboard HMS Victory."Having received Information that the French intend sending Troops to the Island of Minorca / Menorca. You are hereby required and directed to proceed immediately with His Majesty's Ship Narcissus under your Command off Port Mahon, and endeavour to obtain information thereof, previous to your communicating with the Town, and if You find it perfectly safe, You are to send a boat on shore to His Majesty's Consul there, in order to obtain every Intelligence with respect to the French intentions of sending troops to the Island of Minorca, and also with the disposition of the Spaniards towards us. And return immediately after and join me on my Rendezvous off this place with the Information that you may Obtain.Given onboard the Victory off Toulon 14th September 1803Nelson & Bronte"1½ pages, single folio leaf (32.5 x 20.5cm), some light browning and dust soiling, slightly worn at central horizontal fold (not affecting text), laid chain-lined paper bearing manufacturers watermark "S. Timbrell 1803". Provenance: purchased from Maggs Bros circa 1970's and then by descent. Letter housed in original Maggs Bros printed autograph sleeve and with original clipped printed catalogue entry loosely inserted, this stating at foot "Not in Nicholas, and presumably unpublished"Britain's greatest naval commander and Norfolk hero, Nelson was born at Burnham Thorpe, learning to sail in the web of waterways around Burnham Overy Staithe. He was a student at the Paston School, now Paston College, and what is now the Norwich School in Cathedral Close. He sailed into, and out of, Great Yarmouth many times, and it was here that Nelson declared "I am myself a Norfolk man and glory in being so"
