Escort" [so titled on leather title label to upper cover], meticulously detailed journal of the mission comprising 108 full pages of ink ms. text, 67 contemp. mounted b & w photographs (each approx. 82 x 135 mm) all with ink captions including destruction of Mai, Rugi burning, Tali, Seloo, Sirtum, Niktak, Kabak, Gocham, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, etc. and eight ink and watercolour plans, maps and drawings including Camp Gocham, Camp Peine River, Camp Sirtum, Camp Tali, view of Tali, etc., rear section includes a typed letter signed from the Office of the Inspector-General of the Eastern Bengal and Assam Police congratulating Capt. * Japan - Nagasaki. An album of twenty albumen prints [by Felice Beato], c. 1864, including town views, street scenes, temples and boats with figures, birds-eye views of the town, boats on estuary mud, a tea house on a bridge on Tocaido Road, plus an extra albumen print of a large group of Europeans posing on rough ground, all images approx. 21 x 28 cm, most with English pencil captions beneath, some fading throughout, mounts badly dampstained with some purple colour on the majority of images, contemp. traditional style Japanese album with pictorial wooden boards, backstrip deficient, and covers det., oblong folio. Felice Beato arrived in Japan in 1862/3 and lived in Yokohama from 1863 until 1884. He visited Nagasaki in 1864 and took some of the earliest known photographs in this region. Three of the rare photographs in this album are also in the collection of Japanese old photographs in Bakumatsu-Meiji Period at Nagasaki University. These are a photograph of the Bell Tower within the Daionji Temple compounds in Teramaschi (no. 1286); the tea house on the Tocaido Road, upstream on Nakashima River, the oldest known photograph of this bridge (no. 1289); and a general view of Nagasaki from Battery Hill from around the cemetery of Donnoyama in Koshima (no. 1292).
