‘Private Calender (sic) January 1795'.A very detailed diary with manuscript entries from the 1st January 1795 to the 13th September 1802. A note identifies the author as Stephen Wilson who died on the 7th of December 1813 in New Ormond Street, aged 60.Folio. 233 pages of entries. The writer records his life in London, particularly around Hackney and Bethnal Green. A silk manufacturer, he lived in Spitalfields and then Cheapside. An in-depth account of the family, including reference to the ‘Private Calender’ is given by Malcolm J. Harrison in ‘Unravelling the Threads: A Guide to the Wilsons of Stenson in the County of Derbyshire 1664 to 1880’, 2008, p. 78-87. Original vellum boards with functional re-backing.

The front pastedown bears an early bookseller’s cropped catalogue entry describing it as ‘A Noble Old Scrap Book’ … ‘nearly contemporary with the Nuremberg Chronicle’. A very large folio album bound in full morocco (worn) with faded gilt-tooled spine. Overall dimensions approx 565mm x 435mm x 100mm.

Australia. An interesting collection of 19th century photographs recording a visit to Queensland. Images include views of Brisbane, the Brisbane and Tweed rivers, bridges, flooding, topography, railways, gardens, Glass House Mountain, Toowoomba and Hamleigh, followed by photographs recording the voyage home including Sri Lanka, Aden, the Suez Canal and Malta. Late 19th century, 114 photographs of Australia (112 mounted in folio album, one loose and badly creased, one cabinet card), five images of Sri Lanka, nine of the Middle East and five of Malta. Various image sizes: 18cm x 23cm, 14.8cm x 19.8cm, 14.6cm x 21cm, 9.8cm x 14.6cm, etc., manuscript title under the majority. Forty-seven superb hand-coloured lithographic plates by John Gould, H.C. Richter and W. Hart, printed by Hullmandel & Walton, Water or Walter & Cohn, most heightened with gum arabic. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut, half morocco gilt binding (567mm). Bookplates of Birch Bernstein and H.H. Henley. Small Sotheran’s label. [The first edition published in 1836-38 contained 36 hand-coloured lithographic plates, drawn and lithographed by J. & E. Gould and printed by Hullmandel. 47 new colour plates were produced for the second edition, including 12 new species, and the text was rewritten. Sitwell, p. 101] Offsetting from binding turn-ins to edges of title page and final leaf, minor rubbing to cloth at fore-edge, slight wear to head of upper joint, otherwise a fine copy.

HMS Malabar. Montagu (Capt. Sir W.A.), An interesting manuscript copy book, commencing with an instruction that 'I expect the Mates, Midshipmen, Volunteers and Master's Assistants to be perfect in their Equipment, and that at all times they dress in strict accordance with the Regulations of the Service. As the Malabar is about to proceed .....'. Capt. Montagu's letters then commence on the 25th July 1834 with a request to Admiral Sir William Hargood for a detachment of Marines to be sent to the ship. The final letter is dated 5th January 1838. An interesting record of command in the Royal Navy at that time, worthy of further research. Ink manuscript on paper, 300 pages, page size 31cm x 20cm, watermarked Edward Smith 1831, generally several letters per page, marbled endpapers, original reversed calf binding with ship and captain's names to upper board (spine well worn). Orders, 'H.M.S. Malabars Order Book'. A manuscript record of orders received, dating from 1832 to 1837, many from the Vice-Admiral. Ink manuscript on paper, various hands, approx 250 folio pages, page size 34.5 cm x 20cm, worn with several closed tears, bound in ?original canvas covers with button fastenings, title to one side. Plan of HMS Thunderer's Main Yard loosely inserted. HMS Malabar, a 74 gun Repulse-class ship of the line of the Royal Navy, was launched in 1818 at Bombay Dockyard. Die Miniaturen des Graduale sind insgesamt bedeutende Leistungen gotischer Kunst. Hand-bound original leather on 3 real frets with 2 clasps, iron mountings and central rosette with 314 coloured folios with 71 miniatures, some heightened with gold leaf, and 13 ornamental initials. One of 1000 numbered copies. Beautiful and splendid copy of the magnificent manuscript, one of the most important Gothic works of art in Switzerland, created in the monastery of St. Katharinenthal near Diessenhofen. The notations are elaborately written in littera textualis. A page with calendar information is followed by 626 pages with the Latin chants according to the rite of the Dominican Order. The miniatures of the Graduale are altogether significant achievements of Gothic art.

The collection includes models for the big names of the confectionery and chocolate industry of the time: Au chat noir, Mogol's, E. Maze, F. A. Margins trimmed, thus partly with slight loss of letters in the margin, title border with slight loss of image. Partly with restored missing parts, loss of letters there sometimes added by hand. Die kritisch, satirischen Darstellungen erregten großes Aufsehen und brachten Verbote und Zensuren mit sich, weshalb in Folge zahlreiche Motive aus den verschiedenen Buch- und Mappenausgaben entfernt werden mussten. - Wenige Bll. im Rand etw. fleckig u. knickspurig. Insgesamt in sehr gutem Zustand, die Tafeln differenziert, tls. mit zartem Plattenton. Fortification - With 39 copper engraved plates and title page printed in red and black. - Contemp. vellum with bent edges (somewhat soiled, rubbed and bumped). - First and only edition. - In 1652, the engineer and armourer Wendelin Schildknecht published this remarkable work on the construction of fortresses, in which he described his experience in Swedish service under Gustav II Adolf. - The plates show various fortifications, troop marches, technical equipment, etc. The details are highly elaborated with various measurements and functional data, etc. - Due to paper throughout a bit browned, a few pages somewhat heavier (but very evenly), front inner cover and title page with few brown spots, some underlining and marginalia by old hand, the plates a little fingerstained in margin. Altogether in very good condition, the plates highly differentiated, partly with delicate plate tone.

Moderne HLwd. mit Marmordeckeln und montiertem Deckelschild (etwas berieben). Mit Wasserzeichen (Löwe mit Schwert und Initialen C.D.L.). - Das außergewöhnliche Manuskript vereint 18 handgeschriebene Fabeln in fein leserlicher und geschwungener Schrift. Die lavierten Federzeichnungen, welche die Fabeln begleiten sind mit äußerster Sorgfalt ausgeführt und illustrieren das Werk wunderbar in ihrer minutiösen Darstellung der Tiere und Landschaften. Als Vorbild für das vorliegende Manuskript und die Zeichnungen schien eine von Sadeler illustrierte Ausgabe der Fabeln zu dienen, welche 1743 in Paris erschien: Les fables d'Ésope gravées par Sadeler, avec un discours préliminaire & les sens moraux en distiques. - Papierbedingt gebräunt. Im oberen Rand etwas gewellt. Vereinzelt etwas fleckig. Einige Bll. mit kleinem Wasserfleck. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten. French manuscript with 18 hand drawings. Late 18th / early 19th c. Modern half cloth with marbled boards and mounted cover label (somewhat rubbed). - With watermark (lion with sword and initials C.D.L.). - This extraordinary manuscript combines 18 handwritten fables in finely legible and curved script. The pen-and-ink drawings accompanying the fables are executed with the utmost care and beautifully illustrate the work in their meticulous depiction of animals and landscapes. The model for the present manuscript and drawings seems to have been a French edition of the fables illustrated by Sadeler in 1743. - Paper browned. Somewhat wavy in the upper part. Sporadically somewhat spotted. A few leaves with a small water stain. Overall very well preserved.
