Hornby recounts in the bibliography “In 1927 an amusing incident occurred in connection with this book. A copy sent by Messrs. Maggs the London booksellers to a client in the State of Kansas U.S.A. was impounded by the Post Office authorities of the United States and in spite of protests destroyed as an `immoral book`! I myself saw the mutilated copy returned to Messrs. Maggs as `evidence of destruction.` This banning and wanton destruction of a great classic in the original language seems to be worth recording as somewhat of a curiosity in the annals of censorship. I understand that the U.S. Customs Bureau have since relented and that certain editions of the Decameron may now be imported into the United States.”
