A personal account of the ascent of Everest by Hugh Ruttledge – Everest – autograph – Hugh Ruttledge typed account of Mouth Everest signed twice by Hugh Ruttledge^ the leader of the 1933 and 1936 expeditions^ dated May 30th 1939. Folio 5pp^ with a few ms corrections in his hand^ together with a holograph poem on mountaineering ^ a press cutting written during the fateful Malory and Irvine 1922 expedition and a few press cuttings on the eventually successful 1953 expedition. An important document in the history of mountaineering^ especially for the conqueror of Everest. This was probably written as an article either for a magazine or newspaper. ‘The attempt to climb Mount Everest provides one of the last of the great primitive adventures still open to us. The fact that six first-rate expeditions have failed to reach the summit is the measure of its difficulty and the challenge to persevere. Its extreme fascination lies in the belief that success is perhaps only just within the reach of human ability...’ ‘I have seen nothing more terrific than the great face: some 16^000 feet of fluted ice^ up which no human being could force a way. On the west is a colossal precipice^ equally impossible^ while the east is defended by an enormously long^ marrow ridge which provides no sites for even the smallest of camps. No we are left with the north face...’ ‘...in our attempts on Mount Everest we have reached a height of about 28^100 feet which is considerably higher than what physiologists expected of us (at one time they thought that life would be impossible above 23^000feet). ‘....temperatures of more than 50 degrees of frost coupled with such winds affecting men already weakened by altitude and exertion will wreak havoc on the strongest party. Then it is that the real test comes. I have seen powerful and active men so overcome by this paralysing cold that they have prayed to allowed to sit down and rest on an exposed ridge where certain death would overtake them in a few minutes. Ruttledge (1884-1961) a civil servant and mountaineer was chosen to lead both the attempts on Everest which followed the tragic 1922 attempt of Mallory and Irvine. Both attempts were unsuccessful but in 1933 Ruttledge reached 28^116 ft and it was during this expedition that they found the ice axe which had belonged to Irvine. Ironically one of the Sherpa’s rejected for this attempt was Tenzing Norgay – but for his later attempt three years later Ruttledge ensured that Tenzing was involved. It was Tenzing who eventually with Edmund Hillary reached the summit in 1953. Tenzing said of Ruttledge that he was ‘...a wonderful man^ gentle and warm-hearted and all the Sherpas were very glad to be with him.’

Important paper on the Chinese Revolution 1912 – Chinese revolution – formation of the Republic of China. Further correspondence respecting the affairs of China”. China No 3 (1912). (In Continuation of ""China No 1 (1912)"" Cd 6148). London. Published H.M.S.O. Presented to Both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty^ November 1912. London: Printed for His Majesty`s Stationery Office by Harrison and Sons^ St. Martin’s Lane^ Printers to the King`s Most Excellent Majesty^ 1912. With x^ 218 pp.^ folio size 13 by 8 inches^ very good condition^ in the original blue black-printed soft covers. Spans December 1911 to March 1912. Much unrest in China is reported here with such topics in the contents list as: “British residents apply for gunboat protection...”; “Dangerous situation in Sianfu”^ ""Sir G. Buchanan reports speculations in the Russian press as to the future of Mongolia and Tibet""^ “Looting of Chengtu by soldiers...”; “Troops at Lanchow have declared for the republic. Proposed to occupy important points on the Tien-Tsin railway with foreign troops""^ “execution of Chao-Erh-Feng”. “Yuan Shih-Kai elected president of the new Republic”. “War Office suggests reinforcements to be sent from India to Hong Kong”. The Republic of China was formed when the Qing Dynasty fell in 1912. The republic had ended a very long reign of imperial rule. Sun Yatsen was the leader of the opposition that led several civil unrests to unseat the Qing Dynasty from ruling China. The imperial rule was weak and unable to unite the country because of weak policies^ corruption^ and several foreign invasions. Several provinces declared independence from the Qing Dynasty and on January 1^ 1912 elected Sun Yatsen as the first Provisional President of China. However he was unable to get enough support from other provinces and the military under the strong leadership of military general Yuan Shikai. To prevent civil war^ Sun Yatsen turned over the presidency to Yuna Shikai. Yuan Shikai was a strong leader but was corrupt. He abused his power and eventually dismantled the parliament to make him the most powerful man in the country. He ordered several killings of those who opposed his rule. He wanted to become the new emperor of China but several provinces opposed him and declared independence from him. Opposition groups united and formed the National Protection Army that revolted against his rule. Several generals of Yuan Shikkai were not happy about his coronation as emperor so they did not resist the uprising of the rebels. This led to the fall of Yuan Shikai’s rule as he stepped down from power on March 22^ 1916. He died several months later. A very rare British Parliamentary Paper covering events at this pivotal point in Chinese history.
Rare Act from the Highland Rebellion 1745 – Printed Act of Parliament dated October 17th 1745 ‘for the more effectual disarming the Highlands in Scotland...’ folio 16pp plus title^ disbound and in fine condition. One of the seminal Acts which followed the Highland Rebellion of ‘Bonnie’ Prince Charlie. The Calendar Act Printed Act of Parliament dated 1751 being the Act which changed the calendar from the old system known as the ‘Julian Calendar’ which had been in use for centuries to the new Gregorian Calendar which is still in use today. The adjustment required the advancement of 11 days – so that Wednesday September 2nd 1752 was followed by Thursday September 14th. The measure also brought in the calculation of Easter Day which is used today. Folio 32pp including the calculation tables. An important and somewhat uncommon Act.
The Lord’s Day Observance Act – Oliver Cromwell – Printed Act of Parliament from the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell dated 1657 being the famous Act which banned a very wide range of activities with harsh penalties for non-observance – effectively establishing in the public mind the ideals of ‘Puritanism’. The Act banned virtually anything which was enjoyable^ such as singing^ dancing^ visiting ale houses^ working^ taking part in sporting activities. It was this Act which turned vast numbers of the population against Cromwell and the Puritans^ and effectively demonstrated that England had not become a republic free from the supposed tyranny of the King^ but an enslaved dictatorship under the repressive rule of Cromwell. It made the eventual restoration of Charles II three years later all the more palatable. An important document in the history of England. Folio^ 17pp plus title^ disbound but in fine condition^ and bearing considerable marginal manuscript annotation in a contemporaneous hand.

Folio^ 46pp unbound^ some dusting and fraying^ modern repair to final page which is missing one section at the top but otherwise appears complete. Rare. The case of Mary Blandy^ from Henley on Thames^ Oxon^ who poisoned her father with arsenic was celebrated at the time mainly because there was considerable debate as to whether she was truly guilty or misguided. She was nevertheless found guilty and hanged outside Oxford Gaol on April 6th 1752
