All of the letters relate to the lease of Kipling’s property Dudwell Farm and the accompanying Cattle Lodge to Jarvis, discussing terms of the lease (‘I note that the landlord only pays for whatever ploughing the tenant puts in during the last three months of his lease’), stating that he would prefer an arable field to be left fallow rather than planted with roots, reminding Jarvis that rent of £14 is due for hopland and grazing on 24 acres, and commenting on the proposed renewal of the lease (‘I have thought over your proposal that Mr. Jarvis might continue to take on Dudwell Farm, and I am favourable to that idea because I do not like changing tenants. I cannot however see my way towards reducing the rent of the best farm in the valley, as I should then be expected to reduce rents all round….’).
