(5).*** Provenance: Manuscript purchased by Richard Robert Madden (author and colonial administrator, 1798-1886), at the auction of Thomas Moore, which had been in the possession of his publisher, William Power. Boreman, 1734.  *** Pope's anonymous sexually explicitly and personally allusive poem, for which Boreman paid the large sum of 60 guineas for the copyright. Includes a savage caricature of  Lady Mary Wortley Montagu as Fufidia, the woman who 'thirsts and hungers only at one end'.

Judaica .- Josephus (Flavius) Le Grant Almageste, contenant les Annales et Antiquitez Iudaicques depuis la creation du Monde, title within ornate figurative woodcut border, 6 whole-page woodcut illustrations, woodcut initials, large woodcut printer's device to final leaf, small ink manuscript inscription to title head and bibliographical note in later hand to front endpaper, first 56ff. with defects and paper repairs at lower fore-edge corner, these leaves comprising the title with small loss to border and portion of imprint, ã2-4, ã6, A3 & A6 all with text affected but most with letters supplied in manuscript facsimile, and B1-J4 the repairs affecting blank margins only, otherwise some damp-staining, eighteenth panelled century calf, gilt, repair to lower cover, a little soiled and scuffed, folio, Paris, Denis Janot, 1533.*** Rare: USTC lists only one copy, and we can trace no copy at auction in last decade. Not in Adams, or Mortimer French. Woodcuts likely from incunabula illustrations.

La Sainte Bible, printer's device on title, text in double column, ruled in red throughout, numerous woodcut illustrations, including the Old Testament series after Hans Holbein, 14ff. of manuscript translation in at Mm6, title browned with paper repairs to edges and slip laid-down to verso, A2&3 mounted on stubs with a few innermost letters lost, Pp1-6 thin paper repairs to edges, Qq1-5 paper repairs with loss of side-notes and some other letters, Qq6 defective with lower half supplied in paper (?no text lost), otherwise occasional very minor spots of stains, nineteenth century morocco over boards, with brass centre-piece and corner-pieces, extremities slightly rubbed, most of brass clasps remaining, g.e., [not in Mortimer French], folio, Lyon, Balthazar Arnoullet, 1550.*** An illustrated edition of the Geneva version of the Bible in French, with Holbein's series of Old Testament illustrations. Notable also for its inclusion of III Maccabees, advertised on the title verso; in this copy a manuscript English translation of the French by one time owner, Mary Le Couteur, has been bound-in. Provenance: the Bailhache or Balhake family [dated eighteenth century ownership inscriptions to title].  Later, the Le Couteur family of Jersey [various and scattered ink ownership inscriptions, including one with small hand-drawn coat of arms]; bought by Mary Le Couteur in 1826 (autograph ink note), and passed to her son, John Le Couteur FRS, Aide de Camp to Queen Victoria.

Charles I and the Treaty of Newport.- Warwick (Sir Philip, politician and historian, 1609-83).- Draft letter with corrections and deletions to Sir Philip Warwick, “A Copie of a Letter to Sr Philip Warwick assisting at the Treatie at the Isle of Wight”, 3pp., folio, 17th October 1648, containing extended remarks on the treaty negotiations, “Wee are Wondring to what End the King soe earnestly conjured all men to draw on a Treatie by their utmost Strengths and Interests; being thereby made confident that He would not disappoint our hopes; but would make it a certaine and happy inducement to a succeeding Peace”, second page small piece of corner torn away not affecting text, folds, slightly browned.  *** Apparently unpublished.

Final colophon dated 1522, but colophon on εε2 with 1503; the text was reissued in 1522 with a preface by Giovanni Francesco Torresano, which is not here present (the 1503 edition has no preface), and a new colophon on the final leaf. The printed pagination in this copy is unusually located at the centre of the upper margin, rather than at the outer corner.The missing leaves contained “De morte Peregrini” which was on the Index of Prohibited Books, and removed by an early reader. The same was the case for the "Philopatria", on δδ4-5, though these were subsequently supplied from another copy.Provenance: Jesuits of Venice [ink inscription to title].

(W., Wellington Cast Steel Foundry, Middlesbrough) [Photographs of Munitions Production], 5 gelatine prints mounted on thick card, 7 prints c.250 x 290mm., with printed captions on card and photographer's name in blind, mounts lightly soiled or worn, loose together with 2 duplicates and 3 other similar prints in modern cloth portfolio with ties, oblong folio, Middlesbrough, M.Wright, [?1914-18]. *** Shaw and Company at the Wellington Cast Steel Foundry were engaged in supplying various kinds of castings used in connection with war vessels. They also supplied aeroplane bombs, stern frames and propeller brackets for the Admiralty. These unusual photographs include a series of four photographs of aerial bombs in various stages of manufacture. William Shaw’s Wellington Foundry was started in 1881 and was one of a number of enterprises that utilized the phosphoric ores in Cleveland area.
