Lot 1193

DESPERATE HOPE IN 1865 RICHMOND Good content war-date A.L.S. of one 'E. M. Garnett', possibly a relative of the generals of the same name, 1p. legal folio, Richmond, Jan. 14, 1865 expressing his optimism at what at that time was a doomed 'lost cause'. Garnet writes a cousin, in part: '...The people of Richmond seem quite gloomy after the defeat of Hood & the occupation of Savannah by Sherman but I think they are rapidly recovering. Our returned prisoners are in fine spirits at the declining prospects of the North, & say if we will only hold out a little longer all things will be right. The North will never stand conscription, & they will soon have to resort to it, to keep up their armies. Old Frank Blair departs this morning for Washington, his mission is not known beyond the President & the Cabinet, & there are all sorts of rumors in circulation about his interview with Seddon...' Garnett closes his letter citing outlandish prices for tea and coffee in the southern capital. Some fold splits, a few repaired with tape on verso, folds, still very good. Francis Blair, Sr. had met with Jefferson Davis and travelled to Washington to attempt to negotiate a peace with Lincoln. Lincoln would have no part of it, and Blair's mission ended in failure.

Lot 1197

MASSES OF WOUNDED UNION SOLDIERS ARRIVE IN NEW YORK Graphic war-date D.S., 4pp. legal folio, [New York, ca. October, 1862], a statement submitted by one 'R. Ellsworth' for labor supplied to U.S.-chartered vessels, almost all concerning the carriage of wounded Union soldiers. Some of the entries seek reimbursement for: '...removing disabled soldiers from Str. Atlantic...clearing the vessel of Arms, Baggage & Bedding...removing disabled soldiers from Str. Daniel Webster...removing disabled soldiers from Camden & Amboy Rail Road Boat...removing Convalescent Soldiers from the City & Island Hospitals to Fort Hamilton...' A heart-rending conclusion is penned at the end of the document by Thomas W. Johnson, the approving agent for the Assistant Quartermaster General. In part: '...Much of the help employed in the removal of the sick & wounded soldiers...was required in protecting the men from the masses of men, women & children who on such occasions rushed to the boats in overwhelming numbers and also in dealing out shirts & drawers...for the naked soldiers whose blood soaked and filthy garments hand been thrown overboard and in assisting to dress them and remove them from the Transports...' One insect nibble at a fold, else very good.

FRITZ SAUCKEL (1894 - 1946) Nazi chief of slave labor recruitment who seized over five million workers and kept them under the vilest condition. Tried, convicted and hanged at Nuremberg. Hurriedly-signed fine content A.L.S. in pencil, 1p. legal folio, [Nuremberg, 1946], in German to defense attorneys Otto Kranzbuehler and Otto Stahmer. In full: 'Dr. Kranzbuhler Dr. Stahmer Very important question to the witness. Winter 1941/42 came very early. Frost already in October 1941 with snowfall. The winter was unusually harsh cold and snow and lasted until April 1942. Is it possible that the signs of decay on the corpses were delayed (through these circumstances), especially in comparison with the shorter times in their native country. F. Sauckel' Folds, fine condition. Clearly Sauckel was seeking to distance himself from a mass murder in which he was implicated.

Lot 155

Lot 248

(1894 - 1975) German vice admiral, head of Foreign Affairs and Intelligence section of the German armed forces (Abwehr), the number two man to Wilhelm Canaris. An important 4pp. folio, partly-printed D.S. and 4pp. of notes entirely in his hand, written in the Mondorf prisoner-of-war-camp, June 5, 1945, a 'fragebogen', or 'Personnel Questionnaire' issued by the Allies and whose completion was required of all high-ranking military officers. Buerkner lists his biographical details, political organization memberships, writings, speeches, travel, income, promotions and so on. More importantly, he lists all of his travels, including several trips to a secret 'German general', and most closely follow what would later become targets of Nazi aggression. Interestingly, both of Buerkner's bosses were hanged: Canaris for his involvement in the bomb attempt on Hitler's life, and Alfred Jodl, following his conviction for war crimes. Very slightly worn at the margins, else very good and worthy of further research.
