William Pitt.- Armstrong (Francis) The Triumph of Pitt, An Irregular Ode; Respectfully dedicated to the Friends of his Immortal Memory, The Members of the Pitt Club, first edition, bifolium, drophead title, 4pp., a few autograph corrections and insertions by the author, folds, some foxing and staining, with 3 additional manuscript stanzas in Armstrong's hand on another sheet, C. Collins, [c.1811]; and an autograph manuscript poem by Armstrong, Iberia War Song, 3pp., July 1808, both manuscripts laid down, folds, slightly browned, folio (3 pieces). ⁂ The first mentioned is rare, with only a Chapel Hill, NC, copy recorded by WorldCat. A poem on the virtues and achievements of William Pitt who died in 1806. At the end of this poem is a prospectus for an engraving made from a painting by Armstrong 'in commemoration of the Jubilee, Oct. 25, 1809.'. A note to say that the print will be published on the 25th October, 1811 has been crossed though, and amended with the manuscript note 'as soon as possible' in Armstrong's hand.

Smeaton (John) Narrative of the Building and a Description of the Construction of the Edystone Lighthouse with Stone, second edition, engraved title vignette, 23 engraved plates and plans, some off-setting, light damp-staining and spotting to title and plates, title and plate with small tear and paper repairs to edges, twentieth century blue morocco-backed boards, [Goldsmiths' 15747], folio, 1813.⁂ Smeaton's own account of his great lighthouse, completed in 1759. His tower was the third on the treacherous Eddystone reef, 14 miles off the Plymouth coast. The two earlier timber structures, by Winstanley and Rudyard, had both been destroyed. Building with masonry, Smeaton devised and ingenious method of dovetailing and interlocking the blocks of stone to ensure maximum strength, and his example was followed for later towers. In the appendix Smeaton describes the construction of Spurn Point lighthouse on the Humber bank, which was also built to his design.

On 23 September 1584 Sidney married Barbara Gamage (c. 1559-1621), the much-sought-after heir of the recently deceased John Gamage of Coety, Glamorgan.

God send the Kinge, the churche and Mrs Noy... all together respectively interest:d prayers and thanks with diligence... & must needes be mixt to make a sweete smellinge incense", left margin strengthened with later paper, folds, creased; and 10 others, comprising 7 other early 17th century letters, including mentioning "a bottell of sack against Christmas", a barn falling down and bad trade in hides, and 3 sets of 17th century notes, including one relating to Homer, folds, creased, browned, v.s., v.d. Popish Plot.- Corker (James [name in religion Maurus], Abbot of Lamspringe, Germany, convicted in association with the Popish Plot, 1636-1715) [Account of an encounter in Newgate Prison between Thomas Langhorne as Corker and an informant called Bolton], manuscript, 1p., right margin with small tears slightly affecting text, fold, slightly stained, browned, folio, 22nd July 1679; and 7 other manuscripts, including a document relating to the Earl of Mar, 1635, v.s., v.d. (8).⁂ First mentioned a bungled attempt to implicate Maurus Corker by mistakenly confusing him with Thomas Langhorne, younger brother of Richard Langhorne (c. 1624-79, barrister executed as a result of the Popish Plot). "Bolton in the presence of ye Turnekey Mr Langhorne and ye underkeeper called Mr Langhorne by the name of Corker, and said he knew him, and being desired by Mr Langhorne to tell him what he knew of him he againe positively affirmed. That he knew him, and added... I know you to be a Preist, and I have seen you say Mass."

Hammer-Purgstall, Joseph von. Eigenhändiger Brief mit Unterschrift, wohl an den Berliner Diplomaten und Orientalisten Heinrich Friedrich von Diez. Wien, Januar 1809 (Tagesdatum offen gelassen). 3 S. auf einem Doppelblatt feinen holländischen Schreibpapiers, auf der vierten Seite hastiges Postskript mit mehrzeiliger Streichung. 22,5 x 18,5 cm.Früher und inhaltsreicher Brief Hammers. Er berichtet ausschließlich vom Projekt der "Fundgruben des Orients", deren erster Band noch 1809 erschien. Analog dem französischen Paralleltitel "Mines de l'Orient" nennt er sie "Minen". "Hier theuerster Freund erhalten Sie den Prospektus des oriental. Journals zu dem ich Ihnen in meinem lezten Brief Hoffnung machte, u. zugleich eine herzliche Aufforderung im Namen des jungen H. Rzewuski (des Grafen Wenceslaus Rzewusky als Finanzier der Zeitschrift) daran Theil zu nehmen ... Das ganze Werk ruht übrigens auf meinen Schultern. - Ich habe nicht nur die Redakzion sondern auch die Correspondenz mit den Mitgliedern im Namen des Grafen ausschließlich auf mich genommen. Chabert und Dombay werden blos das typographische besorgen. Wenn Sie wie ich noch immer hoffe bis Ostern selbst kommen so bringen Sie uns wohl selber eine kleine Gabe fürs erste Heft mit, und da Ihr Weg über Leipzig gehen wird, so bitte ich Sie Härteln in meinem Namen die türkischen Vorschriften abzufordern die ich ihm ... geliehen habe, weil er selbst ein schönes orientl. Alphabet gießen zu wollen versprach. Zugleich bitte ich Sie von Nikolai die beiden Übersetzungen türkisch(er) Gesandtschaftsreisen zu begehren, welche ich auf Ihre Veranlassung für ihn übersetzte, von denen er aber weiter keinen Gebrauch machen zu wollen scheint. Dieselben sind gerade recht für die Minen; die wie ich hoffe wenigstens Ouseley's (Oriental) Collections ersetzen sollen." - Demnach hat der Adressat Übersetzungen Hammers aus dem Türkischen an den Berliner Verleger Friedrich Nicolai vermittelt, die unpubliziert blieben und behoben werden sollten. Dies weist deutlich auf Diez hin, der bei Nicolai veröffentlichte. Zum ersten Band der Fundgruben lieferte Diez zwei Übersetzungen aus dem Türkischen, die von Hammer mit kritisch-polemischen Anmerkungen versehen wurden und von Druckfehlern entstellt waren. Diese Verunglimpfung führte zu einer heftigen Gelehrtenfehde, die auch Goethe aufmerksam verfolgte. Though Macartney and Staunton had an audience with the emperor their proposals were rebuffed In China [Staunton] closely observed and noted all that he saw, and during expeditions he was able to collect botanical specimens. His son, George Thomas, then just twelve years old, accompanied him to China as page to Lord Macartney, and was the only member of the mission who bothered to learn Chinese" (DNB).
