In total there are 124 fine colour facsimile plates of botanical watercolours by Anne O'Connor, Beverly Allen, Josephine Elwes, Jenny Phillips, Sally Grosthwaite, Jill Coombs, and many others, each signed in pencil by the artist and with the plate and edition number in pencil over the embossed copyright blindstamp of A G Carrick Ltd to lower outer corner, the plates printed on American Cotton paper with the text on 'Somerset Bookwove', text decorations and endpaper pattern by Richard Shirley Smith. Finely bound in the original dark red quarter goatskin, gilt, by Stephen Conway after a design by James Brockman, with gilt hand-tooling by James and Stuart Brockman, dark green goatskin oval onlays to upper boards with gilt lettering and the Prince of Wales' feathers, dark red goatskin board fore-edges, hand-made marbled paper, block-edges speckled. A very fine and most handsome set of this magnificently-produced work (2)

First edition, 2 volumes, large folio, titles in red and black, additional portrait of Johnson after Sir Joshua Reynolds added (not called for) dated 1787, first title damaged and repaired with loss, prefix leaves somewhat creased, prelims to vol 1 with small wormtrack repaired in parts and mainly marginal but occasionally touching a few letters, second title with small closed and repaired tear not affecting text. Occasional faint spotting, but in general this is a good clean and fresh copy of a work that is often quite heavily foxed and well-used. Bound in full contemporary calf, spines rubbed with wear to top and bottom of spines and volume labels, boards worn at extremities. The copy of Robert John Verney (1809-1862), 17th Baron Willoughby de Broke, with his bookplates. The first edition of Johnson's dictionary was limited to just 2,000 copies, which immediately sold out. Unsurprisingly, good copies of the first edition, such as this, are increasingly difficult to find. BY HENRY MOSESLondon, Septimus Prowett, 1824. 2 volumes, large folio, frontispiece (foxed) to vol 1 plus 100 engraved plates (complete), a few plates with light spotting but the majority clean and fresh, a large paper copy with wide margins. This true folio-sized copy (39cms tall by 29cms wide) appears scarce - online records indicating the work as usually being large 8vo/4to format. HOLINSHED, RAPHAELTHE FIRSTE VOLUME OF THE CHRONICLES OF ENGLAND, SCOTLANDE, AND IRELANDELondon, Iohn Hunne, [1577]. Folio, a fragment only, containing woodcut title and prelims followed by 3 parts, these being: 'The Description of Britaine' (125 of 126 leaves, lacking folio 94 otherwise complete), followed by; 'Description of Irelande' (A 28-leaf section, complete in itself), followed by 'The Historie of Englande' (112 of 115 numbered pages, lacking final 2 leaves). Title and prelims detached/loose, main text block stitching broken, one or two single wormholes at beginning which touch the odd letter, heavy worming to inner margin of first few gatherings (largely missing text but sometimes touching letters), soiling, multiple contemporary ink notes to margins, corners and some margins creased, the text now largely loose in the original 16th century leather binding over oak boards, boards with blind panelling, worn and dusty with multiple single wormholes. Despite the condition, this 16th century fragment contains much of interest and is worthy of restoration. The section on 'Englande' is extensively illustrated with woodcuts. [PETERLOO MASSACRE ETC.] THE LEEDS MERCURY NEWSPAPER - BOUND VOLUME OF CIRCA 143 ISSUES, 1812-1835 Leeds, Edward Baines, 1812-1835. An incomplete run, with gaps, between May 23rd 1812 and October 24th 1835 (full list of issues available on request), each newspaper with red tax stamp, all bound together in a 19th century large folio binding of three-quarter black morocco with cloth boards, joints and extremities scuffed/worn, spine with gilt lettering direct. Some of the newspapers have browning, short tears, damp-marks etc., whilst others are in good crisp condition. A small number of issues have 1 or 2 pages missing. This volume of newspapers is a mine of information on some of the major global and British historical events from the end of the reign of King George III through the reigns of George IV and William IV, and also gives an insight into some of the more day-to-day aspects of life during this period, through its many and varied business adverts detailing some wonderful products and services, as well as through its reports on various social events and activities. For example, the issues of August 21st and 28th in 1819 contain detailed reports on the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester which resulted in the deaths of 15 people and an estimated 400-700 injured. In the first few pages alone one can read reports of trials and executions, slavery, the Napoleonic war, comets, smallpox, and highway robbery!
