* French playing cards. Lyon pattern, type III, Lyon: Delaunay, circa 1765, a deck of 24 stencil coloured woodcut playing cards (French suits), probably reduced from a piquet pack of 32 cards for a specific game, comprising 4 suits of 6 (3 courts, ace, 9 & 10), single-figured courts, jack of clubs with LYON, jack of spades with DELAUNAY, lightly toned, scarce minor marks or spots, plain versos, each card 84 x 56 mm, 16 cards mounted with photo corners onto a display board, encapsulated in clear plastic (not examined out of board), the remainder in a plastic bag, the board 54.5 x 40 cmQTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Collection of Dudley Ollis.Berry, Playing-Cards of the World, French 555; Cary, Fra 80-88; Mann, All Cards on the Table, pp.121-122 & #165; The final changes from the Lyon pattern type II to type III were the addition of an orb with surmounting cross for the king of clubs, and fans for the queens, which according to Sylvia Mann occurred in 1761. This pattern declined when the portrait unifie was established nationally in 1780.

* Gillray (James). A View of the Hustings in Covent Garden. H. Humphrey, Dec. 15th 1806, etching with contemporary hand-colouring, toned overall, narrow margins, 250 x 350 mm, together with Flemish Characters, G. Humphrey, Jany. 1st 1822, hand-coloured etched caricature, additional horizontal fold, 230 x 360 mmQTY: (2)NOTE:BM Satires numbers 10619 & 8383. The second described print shows a Dutch market square. In the foreground on the right are a milkmaid and a town crier and on the left a peddler with a spinning game, based on the 'wheel of fortune'. British troops drill in the background. The print was originally etched on a single untitled plate, proofs from which can be found at the British Museum and the Morgan Library. However, it appears that Gillray thought (or was persuaded to think) that he could cut this unusually sized plate (310 x 365 mm) in two and then append some additional copper to make two prints of a more standard size (230 x 365 mm). It didn't work; the "finished" print reveals a clearly visible line across the upper third of the design where the new copper has been joined to the old. Given the amount of time and effort Gillray had devoted to the project, he must have been severely disappointed with the result. This may explain why the prints were never published during Gillray's lifetime. It was not until 1822 that Hannah Humphrey's nephew George published this print and its pair known as Flemish Characters.
