The game of Faro was one of the most popular pastimes in the Wild West, played by nearly every outlaw in every town, featured in many motion pictures most notably the movie "Tombstone" where Wyatt Earp was a Faro dealer in the Oriental Saloon. The game board itself is referred to as a travelling board and is made for transport between mining towns and along the railroad. Manufactured by Ball & Bros. of Chicago, stamped on bottom left card. This is the rather scarce black card version (clubs), most of these were in the red. Cards are silk screened onto the felt board with oak frame. All original and in excellent condition. Measures 41" x 16". This set also comes with an original Faro counting board, also in black (spades) and manufactured by Mason & Co. in Chicago. It, too, folds for carry. Features the entire set of spades with the sliding counting discs. This was used to keep score at the tables. Has an oak frame. All original and in excellent condition. Measures 12" x 12" when opened. Last is a sealed deck of playing cards, made in Belgium, Great Mogul brand. These cards have no indices. This beautiful Faro gaming set is everything that would be needed to play the game in saloons throughout the West in the 1860's through the turn of the century. Seldom offered together in such complete and fine all original condition.

The metal retains approximately 60-70% original factory blue blending with a smooth gun metal patina. Other features include the adjustable flip-up target rear sight, near mint walnut grips, and a near mint chrome butt stock. Both bores are as new. Lock up and function is perfect. Very handsome, rare desirable firearm. Popular in the 1920s with fur trappers. The West German firm of J.P. Sauer & Sohn has been world renowned of their quality bolt action rifles for well over a century and a half. The quality and workmanship that goes into these weapons is unsurpassed. We offer here a model extremely scarce on this side of the pond, it is not even listed in the blue book, the Sauer Model 80 Grand African. Chambered for the powerful .458 Winchester Magnum and capable of taking down the world's most dangerous game. The smoothness of the action, the quality of the high polished blue finish, and the beautifully checkered pistol grip walnut stock with contrasting forend tip and grip cap are, simply stated, the finest available. The barrel, bolt and frame retain virtually all of the expertly reapplied high polish blue finish but there is a few spots under this finish on the frame, none of which detracts from the overall beauty. Rifle features the detachable magazine. Sports a hooded front sight with an adjustable safari type rear sight made to withstand heavy service duty and simple adjustments. The action is like butter and it has a mirror bore. While there may be fancier big game rifles, the quality of this rifle cannot be surpassed. Africa awaits! Serial Number-E6464; Manufacturer-Sauer; Model-80 Grand African; Caliber-.458 Win. Mag; Barrel Length-22 - 1/2"; FFL Status-Modern;

Lot 1137

While Roy Weatherby is known worldwide for his fabulous rifles built using the FN Mauser and later J.P. Sauer action, he was, in the beginning, a custom rifle maker and would build a rifle using any action the client requested. This practice ended in the early 1970's when his business got to large to offer such custom work and a demand for his standard rifles was worldwide. Roy built this rifle utilizing a Shultz & Larson Mauser type action, an M 54 J manufactured in Denmark. It is fitted with a "Weatherby .378 Magnum" marked barrel with no provision for sights. The matted rib on frame has two scope blocks installed. The rear stock has a distinctive Weatherby profile, but from the trigger guard forward it is a much beefier and boxy design. He used a very light wood with his signature contracting rosewood forend tip and grip cap with white diamond. Sports the Shultz & Larson quick release floorplate and trigger guard. The bolt is in the white with three oil holes, but no oil grooves. Sports a Weatherby black waffle buttpad and sling eyes. Frame and barrel retains virtually all of their original high polish blue finish, as does floorplate and trigger guard. Stock is excellent to near mint with just a couple of very minor impressions. The only flaw is that there is a hairline repaired 2" crack on left side of forearm starting at rosewood tip along the barrel contour that could easily be repaired properly as to not be seen. Perfect bore and action. The .378 Weatherby Magnum, which was a vast improvement on the old .375 H&H, was a new cartridge that took two years to develop and is capable of taking down the world's largest and most dangerous game. This cartridge has taken nearly every large dangerous game animal in the world. Serial Number-2387; Manufacturer-Weatherby; Model-Bolt Action; Caliber-.378 Weatherby Magnum; Barrel Length-26"; FFL Status-Curio & Relic;

Lot 1157

D.M. Lefever & Sons Company operated as a separate entity from Lefever Arms beginning in 1902. In the summer of 1903, Dan Lefever and three of his sons moved from Syracuse, New York to Defiance, Ohio forming the D.M. Lefever Company, continuing the prices and grades of the previous Lefever Arms Company. This early high quality Lefever was built using a scalloped boxlock, Greener crossbolt. Barrels were made of Krupp fluid steel, not Damascus, and features a solid matted rib with twin beads. This style of lock can be seen on page 94 in the book "Uncle Dan Lefever" by Elliot. This shotgun is an 8E Grade (per book) not stamped as such; description begins on page 95 and is described as follows: "fine Nitro steel barrels, straight stock without grip, nicely engraved and checkered, full compensated action with automatic shell ejector, price net $75 in 1901".
