A late 19th century 'The Game of War' compendium manufactured for H. M. Government by R. H. Stevens & Co. Ltd, 89 Southwark Street, Londonprobably retailed by Wm. Ives Lincoln, circa 1887-1894the rectangular mahogany box (with key) fitted two lift-out trays containing a set of red and a set of blue slate gaming pieces, each representing the infantry, cavalry, mounted infantry, horse artillery, sappers and machine gun units, and a further slightly smaller tray containing two pairs of steel compasses, two ivory square scales, a shaped brass scale and a shaped steel scale, two ivory dice, and two pairs of later steel callipers or 'nippers', the lower compartmented section of the box containing two ivory rulers, each marked R. H. Stevens, successors to V. & J. Figgins, 89 Southwark St London, a red leather covered dice shaker and a small collection of red and blue stained and natural bone pegs, the inner lid with pasted paper label marked with the names of the divisions within each side and fitted a peg board marked Appendix V. Table C., and a folding map titled Index to War Games Maps for Bucks and Oxon, sold together with a photocopied facsimile 1884 copy of the 'Rules For The Conduct of the War-Game. London: Printed under the Superintendence of Her Majesty's Stationery Office,...', the box, 11cm high, 30.5cm wide, 23cm deep Footnotes:The offered lot bears similarities to a war game in the collection of the National Army Museum. Designed as a British officer's war game, used for the instruction of military personnel in military manoeuvres, it was reputedly a British version of 'Kriegsspiel', a war game originally invented by Lieutenant Georg von Reiswitz for training officers in the Prussian army during the early 19th century.Played on a map drawn on a scale of six inches to the mile with the troops represented by small slate blocks, one coloured red for one force, the other coloured blue for the other force. Gillespie Road fell outside of this range and the Arsenal directors obliged the west London sideProgramme 1 with large tear on spine, some interior tears otherwise good

There are some alterations mad in light pencil to the team line ups for Bristol Rovers for the game taking place on Wednesday September 6th 1933 with a small amount of damage to the facing page, but neither detract from the over condition of that particular programme (27)There are no reserve programmes contained over this two-season volume. the condition is excellent overall with little damage to the folios contained. The binder itself has a small amount of wear and is signed in the inside cover by a Club official

A postcard featuring a photographic portrait of England's first ever football goal scorer William Kenyon-Slaney, postmarked 1906, at the time Slaney was a member of Parliament for the Northern (Newport) Division of Shropshire, the reverse addressed to Church Stretton in Shropshire, good condition; sold together with a press cutting relating to Kenyon-Slaney, (2)England first international was drawn 0-0 against Scotland, but William Kenyon-Slaney scored in the first minute of a 4-2 win in the return fixture at the Kennington Oval on 8th March 1873, making him England's first ever goal scorer. He added a second goal in the game in this his only England appearance. He also played first class cricket and was decorated for his exploits in the battle of Tel el-Kebir in 1882.
