Hughes (J.E.). Eighteen Years On Lake Bangweulu, with an Introduction by Major H.C. Maydon, 1st ed., The Field, [1933], seventy-eight photo. plts. on seventy leaves, correct as list, some marginalia and inserted linen tabs, free endpapers browned, upper hinge splitting, orig. pictorial cloth gilt, a little rubbed and soiled, joints splitting, and spine extrems sl. frayed, large 8vo inscribed on the half-title: Dr. J.A. Gordon from J. Todd, 1933. Todd accompanied Hughes on some of his big game hunts, and a number of their expeditions are described, occasionally embellished with manuscript annotations by Todd. (1)

A 19th century carved oak library bookcase, the foliage moulded cornice set with a mask and flanked by hounds heads, foliage carved framed glazed doors enclosing shelves, carved pendants of fruit to the side pilasters, the base with two frieze drawers carved with mask grips and foliage above a cupboard with a shelf, the pair of doors carved in relief with panels of dead game and foliage pendants to the pilasters, foliage carved base moulding. 4ft.3in. (129.5cm) wide x 7ft.9in. (306cm) high.
A small collection of fine English linen, including a damask banqueting cloth, 164 x 88in. 417cm. x 224cm., seven tablecloths, some in drawn thread work and with lace edging and including a fine damask runner decorated with a pattern of game animals and birds, 68in. x 52in. 173cm, x 132cm., a remarkable embroidered valance, 492in. x 21in. 1,248cm. x 53cm., two antimacassars, four mats, ten place mats and a slip case, all the small pieces in drawn thread work, all late 19th-early 20th century. All in good condition. Provenance: Sir Henry Earle Bt. (1854-1939) and thence by descent to the present owner. (27)
