5 bottles Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee St Vivant 1978 (levels at 2 x 1cm, 2 x 1.5cm, 1 x 2cm). These have near perfect label presentations and include a "Far-East market slip label" The wine has thrown a heavy pigmented sediment and is now very pale in colour. Recent conversation with the winemaker suggested that this is not uncommon with the wine from DRC at this age. However as a result we have agreed with the vendor to open one of the original six bottles and provide a tasting note herewith. Single Decanted 2 hours prior to tasting. Owing to the amount of sediment following colour loss this created nearly 3cms. deposit - the balance decanted very clear and bright. "Extremely pale almost orange, 'pelure d'oignon' in colour, complex nose of earthy game and spice but overshadowed by a clear "maderisee" aspect (the wine is not oxidised and some of the tasters found this element of madeira very appealing). It was deemed that it has been likely that the wine had at some stage been "warm". The palate again showed madeira character but remained long and complex on the finish. Although remaining drinkable the wine does not show its true great character in perfect condition and therefore buyers are openly advised of the condition and style of the Lot (illustrated)
