'Flowers of Fortune', early-Victorian handmade fortune-telling Valentine, c.1840, the central flower can be twisted open to reveal different attributes on each petal ('clever', 'sincere', 'obliging' and so on), the surrounding border of hand-painted embossed flowers and leaves can be turned back to reveal different professions ('an artist', 'an Officer', 'a Policeman', 'a Gardener' and so on), 22cm by 20cm. Together with a handmade "wheel of fortune" Valentine game, which can be spun on its silk cord (the cord indicating the fate when it stops); inscribed in red ink to one side (the lady you'll meet), and black ink to the other side (the man you'll meet): 'A wealthy farmer you shall wed, although a grumbler it is said'; 'You'll be married soon and live not far from here to a nice young man with £500 a year'; 'A tall young fellow is your beau. He's spendthrift and makes the money go'; 'A bachelor's life will be your lot, altho' you have many a lady sought'; 'Be careful or you'll be left in the dirt, for the girl you love is a terrible flirt', and so on (2)

Myers, [c.1860], hand-coloured lithographic sheet of outfit designs, 12 numbered sheets of patterns, publisher's paper covers with ties and hand-coloured lithographic pictorial title, publisher's advertisements for 'Educational Publications' pasted to inside cover, scarce. Together with an Edwardian children's dressing-up fashion game, chromolithographic die-cut outfits and accessories with interchangeable heads of lady and young girl, housed in pictorial card box, stamped to inside, 'Emma S. ISAAC HOLLIS & SONS A BIG GAME HALF STOCKED PERCUSSION SHOT AND BALL GUN, with damascus twist steel barrell 28.5" (73cm), circa 1850's, having octagonal breech stamped I. Hollis & Sons, Makers, made for the African trade. The round barrel with under rib and ram rod pipes, chequered walnut stock with nickle silver fore end sight, white metal and brass furniture mounts to ramrod, total length of gun 45.5" (115.6cm) 6kg (Note of interest - a similar gun was sold by Weller and Dufty on 1st October 1987, associated with and pertaining to the famous missionary Dr. David Livingstone 1813-1873. Valentine notebook, c.1860, the calf boards bearing initials (presumably the initials of the lovers), 'C. M. & E.A.', the endpapers formed of coloured paper lace by Dobbs with manuscript romantic verse, the rear endpaper opening as a wallet, notebook unused but with gift inscription to opening page, 'On the evening hour love, Think of me, And know that I, Do think of thee'. Together with a cloth-bound notebook with game to upper board, partially inscribed as journal documenting trip to London, July & August 1885, and a Harwood's Memorandum Book, expenses in pencil, containing handwritten cheque/invoice, 'Cheltenham 1867' (3)
