First Steps: An 18th Century Fan, circa 1740's-1750's, the ivory monture carved and painted in bright colours. The guards have the addition of portraits in gilded ovals to the tips, a woman on the upper guard, a man on the lower guard. Both guards are carved with figures, cerise foil being visible beneath. The gorge sticks are shaped, with a discernible kink to the centre on some, these being painted with meandering flowers and foliage. Others have their details to the top border, where garden tools, a basket, and a dog chasing a deer are painted. A lower spray of flowers in several colours is tied in blue ribbon with a bow. The double paper leaf makes a feature of blue, mainly in the skies, and in the outline of three vignettes. The largest of these, to the centre, shows a family outside a modest home, one man fishing on the river bank. Two others are playing a game of skittles, these being cone shape and testing the ability of a man to the left who is kneeling ready to take his shot. A maid is drawing water from a well, and to the fore a young mother, dressed in pink, proudly supports a small child in a harness, tentatively taking its first steps. The side vignettes are simple, being painted with a single figure outdoors, under a vast blue sky. The verso has a large landscape, painted mainly in blue, with some shrubbery, a lone man walking next to water. Guard length 27cmBoth guards have been broken at the shoulder and repaired with metal plates. This has had some effect on the first fold to the right. Leaf folds are rubbed.
An Unusual Mid-19th Century Chinese Ivory Mandarin Fan, Qing Dyansty, the sticks being relatively plain, being carved only on the upper section of each guard, and in a central oval on the gorge. The carving on the guards, deeper than that in the central oval, depicts three figures under the shade of a tree. The gorge oval is carved with trees, figures and buildings. The leaf depicts various figures of different social levels, two young men push an older figure in a wheeled carriage, another man walking ahead carrying possessions. Buildings are painted blue and many of the applied silk robes are of a sombre deep plum. Children, to the left, appear to be either playing a game or musical instruments. All figures have applied painted ivory faces. The verso, in bright cerise, shows an unusual grouping, with two figures inside a ceremonial dragon, four musicians with instruments, and four other figures one carrying a fan, another a tall pole supporting a fish, another with a similar pole bearing an oversized flower. The surrounding border is elaborate, and small scale, with vignettes of blooms, fruit and colourful birds. Shaped gold metal loop with silk tassel. Together with a fitted lacquer fan box with domed lid and unusual painting, the lining of blue silk, painted inside the lid with bats, fish, and flowersMonture sound but requires cleaning. The leaf is grubby, noticeable on the cream side, slight rubbing to the leaf folds. Some very small chips to the lacquer at the front of the box. The clasp holds.
A mixed lot comprising a Tangram game in whitewood box, the sliding lid with penwork cottage landscape, 6.5cm, an unmarked silver snuff box worn, a silver stamp envelope box, a silver bladed fruit knife, a mother of pearl egg box, a miniature rotating ivory shrine, 5.5cm, a carved ivory bust medallion, a piece of agate and sixteen mother of pearl gaming counters (24)
