Tejo RemyUnique wall-mounted shelving unit, designed for a private commission, Rotterdam, 1995Patinated steel.194 x 150 x 27.5 cmFrom the series of seven.Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Rotterdam, 1995Tejo RemyNick WrightCo-author of Cut and Shut: The History of Creative Salvage, London, 2012In 1995, the Dutch designer Tejo Remy designed these wall-mounted shelving units for the home of the 010 publisher Peter De Winter, which was an impressive, converted reservoir tower. Its restricted access and intimate rooms, thus determined the scale of these seven unique commissioned works. The idea or 'the game' as Remy once put it was, 'what you cut out has to be used again so that there was no material lost'. The idea was prototyped in a workstation called 'Hideaway' shown in the 1994 exhibition of his work at Gallery Oriel curated by Ralph Turner and is consistent with his early designs, which first drew international attention, including his works the 'Rags Chair' and the chest of drawers titled, 'You Can't Lay Down Your Memories'. Both Tom Dixon, who Remy encountered during an internship with Danny Lane, and Remy have stated that their respective work is not primarily driven by environmental concerns. Nonetheless, as climate change impinges, designers who reworked waste material such as Dixon and Remy are seen as having been, intentionally or not, in the vanguard of sustainable design. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR TPAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Bluelined Snapper" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia Bluelined Snapper stamp issued August 4, 1995. Chris Calle's painting of the Bluelined Snapper is one of a set of four of the beautiful native fish of Micronesia. For centuries, Micronesians have thrived on a variety of food fish harvested from the waters surrounding their home islands. Today, commerical fishing companies have also tapped into the region's abundance of aquatic life. One of the most popular fish caught by such operations is the Skipjack Tuna. Particularly prevalent in the Pacific, these creatures are known to grow very rapidly. However, their life expectancy is only about four years. The Yellow-fin, another variety of tuna, has a reputation as one of the most tenacious game fish. Once it takes the bait, this fish fights the angler every step of the way. The Cave Grouper, on the other hand, is relatively secretive. It inhabits caves and crevices such as those found in Micronesia's steep outer reef slopes. Known to be a loner, the Cave Grouper typically travels singly or sometimes in small groups. A more gregarious resident of Pacific waters is the Bluelined Snapper. This fish occurs in large gatherings, particularly around prominent coral formations, isolated reefs and wrecks. Because this snapper feeds at night, it is among the most popular catches of sportsmen who fish during the evening hours. Image Size: 12.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B15150)

Lot 267

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Bighorn Sheep and Short-leaf Pinon" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This art was originally published in the limited edition collection of philatelic proofcards issued by Fleetwood and the National Audubon Society for the Wildlife of the 50 States. High on the stony heights of Nevada's windswept mountains, Desert Bishorns display their skill in the world's highest and most desolate landscape. With their four-chambered stomachs, these mountaineering mammals survive on the shrubs and grasses that grow in cracks and crevices and, superbly adapted to the western desert, scarely touch water. Sure-footed and agile, their buff-colored coats of hair, similar to those of deer, blend perfectly with the desert country. Because they are shy, they are seen only for a moment before they vanish behind the jagged peaks. Here in the high mountains where few men ever go, Desert Bighorns band together to raise their families. The lambs are born in the spring. Immediately after they have come into the world, the alert mothers lick them clean and then blow on them until dry to prevent blowflies from laying their eggs in their coats. In just a few days mothers lead their lambs back to the herds, urging them to jump from rock to rock. In just two or three weeks, the young lambs are as adept at rock climbing as their parents. In these pinnacles of nature, Desert Bighorns are relatively safe from most predators, except the big-game hunters who prize their massive curved horns. This artwork portrays these adaptable wild sheep roaming among the highest reaches of Nevada's mountains, far about the Short Leaf Pinons that represent the state tree. Image Size: 11.75 x 14.25 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 24.25 in. Unframed. (B06180)

Lot 274

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Red Fox" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked August 10, 1984. Deep in the woodlands of Missouri, four playful Red Fox cubs linger in the evening mist. Born but a month ago, they have spent their first days in the safety of their "earth," a cavity in the ground -- closely guarded by their mother. Their father -- called a dog -- spends much of his time supplying food for the nursing mother. Once these carefully tended pups are weaned, he will bring food for them, too. Frolicking with their parents, the young cubs enjoy their first adventures in the world. The babies are treated to the playful antics of their father who thrives on his role of playmate, even more than their mother, the vixen. Indeed, even as adults, Red Foxes are known for their playfulness. Bounding about, bucking, somersaulting and chasing their tails, they are truly the clowns of the forest. But all of this takes coordination and, being the good parents that they are, the dog and the vixen play games with their young games that will help them develop. For example, when the dog returns with food, the cubs must take it from his mouth -- not an easy trick as the young foxes must jump to reach it. The parents make it even harder by moving their heads from side to side. It all seems to be a game ... as the four cubs jump, bump and tumble about. But they are also exercising their muscles, learning coordinate movements and sharpening senses that they will need later for survival. Image Size: 11 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 18.25 x 20 in. Unframed. (B08940)
