Completely self-taught, he became one of the greatest 20th century Naïve artists. His success did not gather fame as he had hoped, not because of his lack of talent, but because of his circumstances and his enjoyment of the simple life. He created his own image of Russia in a way that has not been attempted before, through a style that belonged only to him. His earlier works were painted in gloomy colour and in them he kept elements of the 'correct' straightforward perspective. In the middle of the 1990's, art became richer in colour and paintings become completely flat. Leonov used this popularity of radical colours, feeling the rhythm with his coarse brush stroke and distorted figures. However, his distinction was in the way the artist created space. Leonov called his paintings constructions. In his paintings, he constructs a world and then places it in another. His work followed a grid-like system of vertical and horizontal lines. The sizes of the grid segments varied, and you can peep into them like into a television screen, into a separate scene. He usually began with the inner frame of the whole composition and then moved to the smaller frame. The depth was created through planes, each of which is parallel to the surface of the image and is the next picture within the picture. Leonov claimed that he always felt short of space – and he kept on evolving into larger formats. A Victorian gold woodscrew novelty propelling pencil, Walter Thornhill & Co, dated 1877, with countersunk head, shank engraved SANDRINGHAM XMAS 1877, 93mm, marked Thornhill 16, 23.5g Provenance: Almost certainly given by King Edward VII (when Prince of Wales) to his equerry Major - General Sir Arthur Ellis (1837-1937) (Gentleman Usher or Extra Gentleman Usher to Kings Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI and Queen Elizabeth II) at Christmas 1877; his son Major Gerald Ellis (1872-1953) Gerald Ellis by whom given to the Honourable Rosemary Seymour, nee Scott-Ellis (1922 - 2017) of Thrumpton Hall, Nottingham; thence by descent to the present vendor. By the 1870's the firm of Walter Thornhill & Co had become renowned for the ingenuity and elegance of (in the opinion of a writer for 'The Queen') the firm's novelty in knicks-knacks. These included, in December 1876, a range of Christmas Novelties, such as the 81 tonne gun arranged as a telescope pencil case or as an etui balloon sewing necessaire incorporating a vinaigrette, travelling desks and bags, perfume and spirit cases and game cabinets... new shoe paper knives... silver champagne pencil... silver bellows scent bottle... and a silver screw pencil case... A quantity of Golly memorabilia, including a De La Rue Golliwogg A Round Game, in original box; a Robertson retail box of Golly Strawberry Jam Fruit Fun Erasers; an umbrella with wooden Golly handle; a set of five cast-metal Gollies; painted wooden Gollies; t-shirt; and books.These items are listed on the basis they are illustrative of by a gone culture in which there were different social norms. We understand the potential controversy surrounding this type of item but believe that providing transparent information about historical context fosters greater understanding of our complex cultural history. Originally handmade by mothers in Africa for their children from old fabric and cloth, the golly doll was adopted as the mascot and trademark for the Robertson's confectionery brand around 1910 after the company's founder John Robertson visited the US and noticed children playing with them. Robertson's Gollies have been collected by people across the UK and around the world for generations but garnered a contentious image in the 1980s because of links to racism. The trademark was removed from Robertson's branding in 2001.
