Froth and Bubble, 1st ed., Edward Arnold, 1915, half-title present, port. frontis., twenty b & w illusts. on fifteen plts., correct as list, 8 pp. publisher’s ads. at rear, orig. cloth, lettered in gilt, faded on spine, 8vo. Scarce. Maurice (ÒMontyÓ) Assheton Harbord, 1874-1954, served as captain in the 1st Imperial Light Horse in South Africa, 1899-1902, inspector Johannesburg Town Police 1902-8 and J.P. for Witwatersrand. He later found his way to British East Africa where he became a farmer and enjoyed big game shooting. One night in 1913 he was attacked by a leopard who was stealing goats. Harbord’s face was terribly injured and he lost the sight of one eye. In the preface to his book ÒFroth and BubbleÓ Harbord states Ò... and that I write at all is due chiefly to the enforced idleness consequent upon the result of trying to stop a wild beast from poaching. Nor could I have succeeded... without the patient assistance of my friend Alys Lowth... Ò. This title is not listed in R.G. Hackett’s bibligraphy South African War Books. (1)
