The following three lots, nos. 449-451 are a very rare and real opportunity to see (and bid for) three separate Lions Jerseys from three tours to S Africa across 20 years. They were worn by legends of the game, come with great provenance and retain, or have been carefully refreshed to splendid condition. Rare 1955 British & Irish Lions match worn Jersey: Jeff Butterfield, the great England centre's no. 2 (tour number) scarlet jersey, named to label, Forsyth's make, lovely Lions crest to breast and with white number to rear. Looks to be in fine original condition. Jeff had 28 consecutive English caps and played all 4 tests in SA (nine tour tries then) and 2 tests on the 1959 trip to NZ. He later ran 'The Rugby Club' in London. Marvellous opportunity. Comes with handwritten details of career to two cards and a mounted colour press pic of the whole Lions tour squad, with printed autographs below. VG indeed
Rare 1974 British & I Lions Signed & Matchworn Jersey: Recently-deceased Llanelli, Wales, Barbarians and Lions fly half and later captain, the legendary Phil Bennett's 1974 jersey from the second test at Pretoria on the Unbeaten Lions' great tour to SA some fifty years ago. It has been boldly but neatly signed by Phil in black marker below the badge. Umbro make, 42", with Lions crest and to rear, stitched white cloth 10. It has been washed and that familiar faint pinkish resultant tinge can be seen to parts of the white collar etc. He had scored an iconic 50-metre try in that test, was of course the sidestepping catalyst for the 'try of all time' by Gareth Edwards for the 1973 Baabaas v NZ and had helped Llanelli beat the same All Blacks three months earlier. One of the true greats of the Welsh, British and World game. A fantastic chance to own this superbly historic item. Comes with an account of his career, hand signed by himself and by fellow Lion, JPR Williams. VG
