Caribou (Rangifer taurandus), Generk Glacier, Yukon, Oct 1913, by Rowland Ward, head mount, 38 points, right antler 117cm, left antler 115cm, distance from the wall 92cm, on oak shield with ivorine title plaque as above, vestiges of original labels on the reverse and gouged RW Provenance: Laurence Cadbury Collection. Part of a collection of mounted big game trophies brought back from Alaska, North America and East Africa in 1913 and 1934 by Laurence Cadbury. Many of his specimens were mounted by Rowland Ward, and were sold by James & Lister Lea in a marquee at "The Davids", Hole Lane, Northfield, Birmingham 17th and 18th November 1988. This was lot 745 and was illustrated in the catalogue.
A massive single barrelled 4 bore percussion wildfowling gun, by Gough & Bowen (listed in Carey as working 1840-55), 61” overall, 3 stage browned twist barrel 44” with octagonal breech engraved with maker’s name, the breech plug engraved with game bird; scroll engraved back action lock and hammer, walnut halfstock with chequered wrist, engraved steel mounts including square fronted trigger guard with extra scrolled grip, brass tipped ebony ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition (steel reinforcing plate let into the stock opposite the lock during its working life). Plate 25
A gun size copper powder flask, overlaid with brass plaque embossed with dog and game bird beneath tree, the top marked “Dixon & Son, Improved Patent”. GC (minor damage, spring AF); a Western type open top leather holster and cartridge belt, the former stamped “Abercrombie & Fitch Co, New York”; and another open top leather holster. GC. (3)
A late Victorian mahogany games compendium, the hinge lid and double hinged front revealing a fitted interior, including chess and draughts pieces, dominoes and a horse racing game, inlaid with a plaque inscribed `Benetfink & Co Games Dept...`, length approx 32.5cm (faults and some games matched), together with a mah jong set.
