Siberian Ibex (Capra ibex almasyi), Central Asia 1907, by Rowland Ward, head mount, right horn 136cm, left horn 135cm, tip to tip 87.5cm, on Rowland Ward oak shield with ivorine title plaque inscribed Thian Shan Ibex, Central Asia 1907, the reverse with Rowland Ward The Gallery of Natural History label and gouged RW See illustration. These horns equate to 53 /12 inches which are record class. Two of this size are recorded in Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game, circa 1921.
Takin (Budorcas taxicolor), Lohit Valley, S.E. Tibet, 1,000ft, 10 July 1911, shot by Capt F M Bailey, by Rowland Ward, 72cm from the wall, on oak shield (gouged RW) See illustration. Mentioned in Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game, 1914 edition, p.348. The Takin in Szechwan occupies rugged terrain with jagged cliffs and granite precipices between the altitudes of 2500m and 3000m upwards to 4500m, a range which includes thickets of bamboo and rhododendron as well as alpine meadows where the animals may feed in summer. Further west, in the Mishmi Hills along the Assam-China border, Takin live in steep and dense evergreen forests at altitudes of 900m to 3000m.

Provenance: Laurence Cadbury Collection. Part of a collection of mounted big game trophies brought back from Alaska, North America and East Africa in 1913 and 1934 by Laurence Cadbury. Many of his specimens were mounted by Rowland Ward, and were sold by James & Lister Lea in a marquee at "The Davids", Hole Lane, Northfield, Birmingham 17th and 18th November 1988. This was lot 738 and was illustrated in the catalogue. A full mount Alaskan Brown Bear was sold in the same sale as lot 736, and this example is recorded in Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game, vol II. This example was probably shot during the same hunting trip.

Yukon Example. Provenance: Laurence Cadbury Collection. Part of a collection of mounted big game trophies brought back from Alaska, North America and East Africa in 1913 and 1934 by Laurence Cadbury. Many of his specimens were mounted by Rowland Ward, and were sold by James & Lister Lea in a marquee at "The Davids", Hole Lane, Northfield, Birmingham 17th and 18th November 1988. This is probably either lot 740 and 752 from the Cadbury sale (erroneously described as Mountain Bighorns in the catalogue).

Sir Edmund Loder is recorded in Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game, pg.202, as having taken an Astor Markhor in 1891, the tip to tip measurements of which equate to this one.

These are record class horn measurements. Many of the horns recorded in Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game, indeed the world record example (34 3/8 inches) were taken in the famous Gredos hunting grounds.
