D.M. Lefever & Sons Company operated as a separate entity from Lefever Arms beginning in 1902. In the summer of 1903, Dan Lefever and three of his sons moved from Syracuse, New York to Defiance, Ohio forming the D.M. Lefever Company, continuing the prices and grades of the previous Lefever Arms Company. This early high quality Lefever was built using a scalloped boxlock, Greener crossbolt. Barrels were made of Krupp fluid steel, not Damascus, and features a solid matted rib with twin beads. Double triggers, beautiful dark grain hand checkered English type rear sight with Monte Carlo comb, finely checkered side panels, owner's plaque in stock, and an early Upland Game red waffle recoil pad. Stamped on bottom of frame "D.M. Lefever Sons & Company Pat'd 1902 Not connected with Lefever Arms Company". The biggest departure from the standard Lefevers was a boxlock instead of sidelock. This style of lock can be seen on page 94 in the book "Uncle Dan Lefever" by Elliot. This shotgun is an 8E Grade (per book) not stamped as such; description begins on page 95 and is described as follows: "fine Nitro steel barrels, straight stock without grip, nicely engraved and checkered, full compensated action with automatic shell ejector, price net $75 in 1901". In 1901 This 8E $100 Grade was the top seller. Bores are clean and shiny. Barrels retain approximately 70% original blue starting to thin and patina, with age freckling on the right barrel extending 10" from breech. Forearm is finely checkered with ebony tip. The frame exhibits delicate scroll engraving with setter on right side and mallard on left. The wood is in beautiful condition, has been freshened up at one time, with a couple minor dings. Two screw tip powder horns including a very nice Center County screw tip powder horn with red stained domed butt showing a turned bead at base and having a wide staple and thorn attachment method. For a nearly identical example see page 271 and 272 of "Pennsylvania Horns of the Trade" by Arthur J. DeCamp. This horn has its original beehive turned screw tip with the chased male threads on the spout of the horn and the non-tapered hole in the horn spout. Excellent condition; a few insect damage marks not penetrating through the outside wall and a few scattered marks on plug. The second screw tip horn is a small Reading-area Berks County horn with beehive collar and original tapered turned screw tip spout, large tapered dome butt with wooden knob at top. Good condition; still retains original collar and screw tip. Dark patina to body with some very dark staining in one area towards butt. Butt is missing about a 2" chip on one side. Knob also has some losses. Also includes three other horns; two of which have bulbous wooden plugs with wooden knobs, one turned and having a wooden spout. One horn has some losses to body from insect damage, the other two are very good but showing some marks from use. Also includes a bronze flask with embossed scenes of dead game on both sides and brass powder measure spout on top. One dent on bottom of left side and some separation at seam on bottom. Otherwise excellent with dark patina. Serial Number-N/A;

David Cox (1783 - 1859), The Mistletoe Bough, the legend of Titchmarsh Castle; Provenance: Thos. Agnew and Sons Ltd., and David Cox, Woodland glade, watercolour (2). The Lovell Bride of Titchmarsh: Thomas Haynes Bayly’s song/poem "The Mistletoe Bough", penned in the 1830s, purports to tell the story of a tragedy that took place at a Christmas wedding. During a post-wedding game of hide and seek the bride, who hid in a trunk in a forgotten attic, found herself locked in, was never discovered, died and was only found, eventually, many years later as a wedding dress-clad skeleton. The story has caught popular imagination for many years – so much so that it was apparently sung in every house at Christmas in the mid-nineteenth century.
