I explained it is only a rough and lettering should be l.c. (and straight), and `barge` should be `barge-barge-barge` (hyphens as tow-ropes).` (1 April [1965]) and noting production difficulties, `I hope E Verse isn`t being too much of a worry. It`s funny how some publications go smoothly and some don`t. We have just sent you my latest, which went very smoothly, at the printer, and got here safely, and went neatly into envelopes: very astonishing. Cecil John Rhodes, hand addressed in fading ink to the Game Keeper of the Right Hon. C.J. Rhodes. 2. Second (different)inivitation to the Funeral Service of Rhodes hand addressed in ink to Mrs. & Miss Curry, with a large unidentified signature across the text of the card, with 3. The original Civil Service Club envelope with Miss Curry penned on the front. 4. The Funeral Obsequities of the late Right Hon. Cecil John Rhodes at St.George`s Cathedral on Thursday,April 3rd. 1902. Second impression: 268 pages, frontispiece, 47 illustrations, original cloth neatly recased – the cloth is a little dull, newspaper cuttings pasted on the second front free endpaper and the verso of the illustration at page 237 which has off-set onto the facing page, some light foxing on pages 10-15 otherwise the contents are good. Czech (Dr. Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785-1999 (New edition 2011), page 174, ‘In this autobiographical work, Lyell recounts his earliest travels in Mashonaland, heading into the interior after eland, nyala and lion. He continued in Nyasaland where he bagged kudu, lion, impala, sable and hippopotamus. He collected his first elephant using a Gibbs.303 magazine rifle (which he has only fired three practice rounds through!). Lyell devotes a lengthy chapter to his continuing elephant experiences, and includes hunts for buffalo, rhinoceros, eland and lion near Lake Victoria.’ Good London T. Hard cover 435 pages with 17 illustrations, published by Longmans, Green and Co, London and New York, 1889, b/w photographic plates accompanied by protective tissue guards. Marble boards with quarter leather to the spine of the board and to the corners of the front and rear boards, rubbing to the front and rear board as well as along the edges of the boards and down the spine, slight bowing to the front board, the binding is tight and square, light foxing to the front and rear free end pages and to some of the protective tissue guards throughout the book. There is some offsetting to the front and rear pastedowns with an ex Libris placed on the front pastedown. This book is in beautiful condition considering its age. Contents as listed in the index: 1. Andersson, Charles John Notes of Travel in South Africa 15 x 22 cm A copy rebound for library use in a half binding of marbled paper on board and red leather, no dust-wrapper thus. The front cover and frontispiece were folded over diagonally and the board was repaired with green cloth patches. Octavo (150 x 217mm), 13 preliminary and 338 pages of text; portrait frontispiece. Some wear to head and tail. Condition Good for its age and history. This, posthumously published book, records the final adventures of the author, in the area now known as Namibia, the narrative being continued up to the time of his death on the banks of the Cunene river. The Ovambo Tribe, a warlike race in the north, are described and there are interesting notes about the game birds of the country. There is less emphasis on hunting than in the author`s earlier books, because he had been severely wounded in a battle with Namaquas. There is, however, a chapter on leopard hunting.
