(15cm.) high., *Condition: in excellent condition, with very light rubbing to calligraphy.,
A heavy studded beechwood bracciale (armguard) for the game of pallone, described by Burckhardt as the classical game of the Italians, the top impressed ROMANELLI ANTONIO F. FIGLI, MONTE.S.SAVINO, X AREZZO X 1927 X ITALY, the rim engraved SUCCESSORE DI PETRAZZINI, 7¾in. (19.7cm.) diameter, 7in. (17.75cm.) long., * This bracciale is almost certainly older than the 1927 dated engraving., ** The game of pallone was particularly popular throughout northern and central Italy in the 18th and 19th centuries but is a far more ancient game than that with its first regulations invented by Antonio Scaino from Salo in 1555. , Balls are struck back and forth by opponents wearing a wooden cylinder over the hand and forearm known as a bracciale. Originally an inflated ball was used, which was changed to a solid rubber ball in later times., *Condition:Chip and two small nicks to edge at one end. Otherwise good with no further faults. Good patina and colour to wood.
An impressive 18th century Beauvais tapestry after Jean Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755), depicting 'La Main Chaude' (a Game of Hot Cockles), the figures in a wooded landscape beside a stream and stone folly, an open landscape with chateau visible in the distance, a shepherdess and her flock on the opposite bank, within a magnificent frame style border with bold acanthus decoration and cartouches to the angles, 118½ x 156in. (301 x 396cm.), some minor repairs. , *Condition:Colours remain bold and bright overall, with the exception of some fading to the pale areas in the distant landscape/sky above and standing lady's dress and some minor fading to the reds in the border to the left hand side. There is also a faint water tide mark to the sky above the distant landscape. Backed in neutral linen - there are two areas of water/damp damage with one large hole to this linen, but the tapestry in front does not appear affected. Some small, well executed stitched repairs and small patches. Small split to very edge border at top left corner and a few smaller worn splits/holes to very top edge. Hanging rings have been swen onto top edge verso.

(4), *Condition:the small horn version with crack to main body, others showing wear, good.
A Chinese Canton carved ivory cup and ball game, late 19th / early 20th century, the tapered carved and pierced handle with birds amidst flowering prunus above rockwork, the ball in pale grey crackle glazed pottery, the handle and cup 5 1/8in. (13cm.) long., *Condition: Several small natural hairline cracks to cup. No damage to ivory carving. Good overall with glossy finish to outside of ivory carving from handling.
