The Great Train Robbery - an original Monopoly ' Chance ' card from the set famously played with by the robbers, whilst hiding out after the robbery at Leatherslade Farm. A rare and important part of the story of the Great Train Robbery. Believed to have been used in the original court trial which saw several of the gang members imprisoned. Later signed by Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs in black ink, to the top. Obtained personally by the vendor, a well known GTR enthusiast. A rare and important part of British crime history. The Great Train Robbery was the robbery of £2.6 million from a Royal Mail train heading from Glasgow to London on the West Coast Main Line in the early hours of 8 August 1963, at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn, near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire, England. After tampering with the lineside signals in order to bring the train to a halt, a gang of fifteen, led by Bruce Reynolds, attacked the train. Other gang members included Gordon Goody, Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson, Roy James, John Daly, Danny Pembroke, Jimmy White, Ronnie Biggs, Tommy Wisbey, Jim Hussey, Bob Welch and Roger Cordrey, as well as three men known only as numbers "1", "2" and "3". A 16th man, an unnamed retired train driver, was also present. With careful planning based on inside information from an individual known as "The Ulsterman" (erroneously named as Patrick McKenna in 2014), the robbers escaped with over £2.6 million (equivalent to £53.5 million today). The bulk of the stolen money was never recovered. Though the gang did not use any firearms, Jack Mills, the train driver, was beaten over the head with a metal bar. Mills' injuries were severe enough to end his career. After the robbery, the gang hid at Leatherslade Farm and famously used the money in a game of Monopoly - unwittingly incriminating themselves whilst doing so as the Monopoly set was used to garner finger prints of the suspects and was instrumental in the Police arresting most of the gang. The ringleaders were sentenced to 30 years in jail.

Lot 25

The Great Train Robbery - an original £1 One Pound bank note from the robbery, used in the trial to convict the Great Train Robbers. To the rear of the note is a period label, believed to be highlighting a fingerprint. A rare and important part of the Great Train Robbery. The composer Daniel Jones was a friend from boyhood of Dylan Thomas, as charted in his memoir My Friend Dylan Thomas (1977). During the Second World War, Jones had worked at Bletchley Park as a Captain in the Russian-Japanese section. Dylan Thomas never heard the BBC Radio premier (which famously included his friend Richard Burton as the narrator), dying of alcohol poisoning in New York on 9th November 1953 at the age of just 39. George came out of it a game changer, elder statesman, mentor to many influential watch producers and a national treasure.Considered as one of the greatest watchmakers of the 20th Century, George struggled for more than two decades to persuade many of the Swiss watch brands that his revolutionary Co-Axial escapement – designed to run unaffected by the deterioration of its lubricant – was possibly the greatest advance in horology since Thomas Mudge invented the lever escapement over 250 years ago. Eventually, he was proved correct and Omega adopted the Co-Axial design introducing it into select models at the Basel Fair in 1999. To celebrate this monumental deal, George, along with his apprentice Roger Smith, set about creating the Millennium wristwatch series. The Millennium was created over a period of 3 years with delivery made in 1999 ahead of the new millennium. This was the first collaboration between George and Roger and each watch was painstakingly hand-finished by the two of them in what is considered as an 'English style'. With just 48 examples made in yellow gold it is difficult to overestimate just how important these watches are especially when considering the current example was the 9th watch created by George in the series. To take horology forward by a greater step than anyone else has done since Thomas Mudge in 1755 is quite simply phenomenal. At a time when the stock of independent makers seems to be sky rocketing, the current lot offers a fantastic opportunity to own a significant part of contemporary watchmaking history. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
