THE RUGBY CLUB HOUSE: J J WILLIAMS' LLANELLI RFC JERSEY 1970s match-worn by J J Williams MBE (1948-2020), the jersey in traditional red with white collar, patch badge with Llanelli crest and 'Cymru am Byth', black number 14 stitched to white square, signed by the player.Provenance: purchased by the vendor as J J Williams' jersey at Anthemion Auctions, Cardiff, in October 2004, subsequently the vendor met J J Williams at an event he was hosting at the Brewery Field. JJ asked the vendor how the vendor came by the shirt and remarked that it was his from the 1970s and had been match-worn. It was then that the jersey was signed by the player.John James Williams’s was one of Wales' greatest players and one of the fastest wingers in rugby history. JJ possessed an all-round athletic prowess that he could have forged a sporting career on the track rather than in the scarlet shirt of Llanelli and Wales. He was a Welsh Secondary Schools international at rugby union and athletics and represented his country as a sprinter in the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. His decision after Edinburgh to concentrate on rugby brought joy to the followers of the game in Wales and supporters of the Lions. Williams went on to win 30 caps and score 12 tries for his country, and he appeared in seven Tests for the Lions in South Africa in 1974 and New Zealand three years later. In South Africa, on the most successful Lions tour of all time, Williams rewrote the rugby record books. In the words of Bill McLaren, one of the commentators who marvelled at Williams’s feats, Williams was “as quick as a trout up a burn”. But it was not just out-and-out pace that distinguished him. Williams was master of the art of the chip-and-chase, the little kick over the heads of on-rushing defenders that enabled him to exploit the space behind them.It was this skill that helped Williams to one of his two tries in the third Lions Test against the Springboks in Port Elizabeth in 1974, a match considered to be one of the most violent Tests in the sport’s history. The Lions had already won the first two Tests in Cape Town and Pretoria, and the Springboks feared a humiliating whitewash. Two massive fistfights broke out, but Williams and the Lions rose above the mayhem. The wing scored two tries for the second Test in succession, the first Lion of the 20th century to cross the line in a Test. In his second he sprinted from the halfway line and used his trademark chip-and-chase to outflank the despairing Springbok defenders. Williams dabbed the ball down and the moment was captured by one of the finest black-and-white rugby photographs ever taken. His time at Llanelli included the famous win against the All Blacks in 1972. He appeared 223 times for the club scoring an astonishing 164 tries. After his retirement in 1980, Williams became a pundit and commentator for BBC Cymru Wales and later a successful businessman. His son, Rhys, is a professional track and field athlete.

Lot 191

THE RUGBY CLUB HOUSE: 1959 SCOTLAND & IRELAND COMBINED JERSEY MATCH WORN BY TONY O'REILLY ONE OF RUGBY'S GREATEST EVER WINGERSThe 36ins chest Lillywhites made jersey retains labels to the interior, white collar to Irish green and Scottish blue quarters and bearing crests of Scotland and Ireland to shield stitched to chest, bears white No.5 to back (to denote the position of wing at the time), jersey in exceptionally fine condition with no loss of colour and all detailing complete. Note, that the jersey appears to be the first Scotland/Ireland combined jersey from 1959 to appear at auction. A very rare jersey in immaculate condition worn by a true great! The jersey was worn by O'Reilly on October 17th 1959, when his Scotland/Ireland combined team played the England/Wales XV at Twickenham to commemorate the Twickenham Jubilee season. O'Reilly was one of twenty-three British Lions playing in the match having recently returned from Australia and New Zealand. O’Reilly scored a fabulous individual try in what was said to be a brilliant match characterised by exciting open play and fitting of the occasion. England/Wales won by four goals and two tries (26 points) to Scotland/Ireland's one goal, one penalty goal and three tries (17 points).Sir Anthony Joseph Francis O'Reilly AO (born 7 May 1936) is as well known for his exploits as a high-profile Irish businessman as he is an international rugby union player. But when it comes to his sporting career, he stands out as a true record breaker and possibly the greatest winger of all time. O'Reilly remains the British Lions and Barbarians record try scorer as well as sharing (with Mike Gibson), between 1955 and 1970, the longest International playing career for Ireland. O’Reilly made his senior international debut aged 18 against France on 22 January 1955. He scored his four tries for Ireland against France on 28 January 1956; against Scotland on 25 February 1956; against Wales in 1959; and against France in 1963. He made his final appearance for Ireland on 14 February 1970, after a six-year absence from the national team. This final appearance, against England, was an 11th-hour replacement, denying Frank O'Driscoll and which ended a seven-year hiatus of O’Reilly’s test career. He did well to last this last game at Twickenham as he was strictly a social player by then at London Irish. He spent most of the match in a daze after a blow to the head!Tall for a wing, at 6ft 2in, and nearly 15st, O’Reilly was swift over the ground, a fine reader of the game and a brilliant finisher. He reserved his greatest feats for the Lions, for whom he felt more of an affinity in terms of style. Tony O’Reilly is enshrined as a member of the International Rugby Board's Hall of Fame. With regards to business, Tony O’Reilly was purported to be Ireland’s first billionaire. He held positions at Independent News & Media Group, Heinz, and Waterford-Wedgwood.International Playing Stats: Ireland played 29 times scoring 12 points, Lions 10 appearances scoring 18 points, Barbarians 30 appearances scoring 114 points.Provenance: private collection West Wales, gifted by O'Reilly to vendor, expansive letter of fascinating provenance handwritten by the vendor (see images). The letter explains the background of the vendor's ownership of the jersey since 1984, which involved a fortuitous discovery of Tony O'Reilly's Irish cap and a great deal of generosity by the vendor in returning this long lost treasure to the player. Also, to accompany, revealing ephemera including a black and white photograph of the vendor with the infamous Irish cap and relating typed letters from O'Reilly on Heinz headed paper and relating letter from then IRFU secretary R Fitzgerald on IRFU headed paper etc

Lot 193

THE RUGBY CLUB HOUSE: 1905-1907 WALES INTERNATIONAL RUGBY UNION JERSEY WORN BY RHYS GABE (1880-1967) HAVING BEEN SWAPPED WITH IRISH OPPONENT BASIL MACLEAR bearing embroidered Prince of Wales feathers on a black background, four buttons and white collar, bears label to back of waist for J C Stewart, EdinburghProvenance: quotation by Rhys Gabe in 'Fifty Years of the All Blacks' 'The match between Munster and the All Blacks in November 1905 afforded Basil Maclear the opportunity of creating a unique record - that of playing against the All Blacks four times. What the extent of Munster's defeat would have been without the heroic deeds of Maclear is a matter of conjecture. Captain Maclear was a charming personality and persona grata, with all his opponents on and off the field. I was delighted to exchange jerseys with him after a memorable Ireland v Wales game, when we were Captains and opposite numbers at Centre ¾'Statement from vendor 'after Basil was killed in 1915, all of his effects were sent to his mother and she in turn passed them on to her granddaughter, my mother. (I should point out that my grandfather Percy, Basil's brother, had already been killed less than a year earlier, and a third of the five brothers was killed towards the end of the Great War). My mother was the only child of that generation. Of my mother's children, I was the sportsman, so she passed all of Basil's effects to me. These included a a suitcase containing his rugby jerseys and caps, comprising three Ireland jerseys (one with his name-tag sewn in), a Welsh jersey and an All Blacks Originals jersey. He had played against them 4 times on their 1905 tour. I have been caring for these since they came into my possession in 1974. I am the son of the late Eileen Bickford, nee Maclear and Basil Maclear was my mother's uncle'.
